Starting out as an author is tough.

If you want to support my author journey, please post a review.

A year ago today, I fulfilled a lifelong ambition of being traditionally published. It was a fabulous day.

5O days later my publisher ceased to trade and I was unpublished.

After crying for 3 days I decided to go indie, found a fab cover designer, (I love the new cover so much) typesetter etc etc and republished on 18 April 2023.

It's been a rollercoaster ride ever since, but in the spirit of 'if a job's worth doing it's worth doing well', I've given it my all - or as much as I can while living with Multiple Sclerosis. I've put myself out of my comfort zone and given talks at libraries, book groups and writing festivals.

I've done interviews online in person and met loads of really supportive and generous writers, editors and book people along the way. It's these people who have kept me going and who cheer me up when I need it.

So, I just want to say thank you to all those who have supported me and to all the readers who have bought, read and reviewed my book. It really means a lot to me.

For those of you who have a dream to write, just go for it - in the words of George Eliot. "It's never to late to be what you might have been"...

Oh and I'll be revealing the beautiful new cover for the next Olivia Wells Mystery early in the New Year..

Black Friday sales have already started and it feels like everywhere we turn we're being told to buy.

šŸ“Œ But unless we're buying something we really need, let's resist the urge and reject overconsumption this sales season!

Sharing some love with the dogs at the Shell House in the fabulous
Gyllyngdune Gardens.

These little caves were decorated by the daughters of the owners of the house built here in the 1830s and they used shells they collected from the trading ships in Falmouth Harbour.
It is thought that these shells came from places like Jamaica and would have been used as ballast for the ships that were sailing to and from Falmouth.

Many of the exotic plants in the impressive quarry garden would also have been brought to Falmouth by ship from far flung places and the town's many parks have stunning collections of sub-tropical species that thrive in the mild climate.

It's true that you never stop learning and I'm really getting into Falmouth's maritime history.

After spending a lot of yesterday underneath tables, Margot & Geoffrey enjoyed a good run and play fight on the beach this morningā€¦

Today we went and looked at Falmouth Bay from the other direction. It wasnā€™t quite as sunny but st least the rain hadnā€™t started yetā€¦
On the way back we went past this rather grand house at the back of Swanpool. It was built in 1810 by the celebrated Packet Ship Captain John Bull.
This isnā€™t as random as it might seem. My next book features a Packet Ship Captainā€™s House, fictionally situated by Rosemullion Head, which has just been converted into an eco boutique hotel by Rocky and Olivia.
The book starts with the opening night, on a beautiful midsummer eveningā€¦.and the trouble soon beginsā€¦

Making the most of the sun today by checking out the details of the setting for my next book that includes a secret, rocky cove overlooking Falmouth Bay. All the mud was worth it for the views....

I was thrilled to get this - a great boost just when I needed it....

Enid Blyton wrote the the last of her 21 book Famous Five series in 1963. Ten years later Elisabeth Beresford wrote the first of her 20 Wombles stories... As a child in the 1970s I was obsessed with both the young amateur sleuths and the first proper eco warriors in children's fiction. It's only through the author events I've been attending recently and the questions I've been asked that I've come to realise how much of an influence and inspiration these early books must have been for my own ecologically-aware amateur sleuths...

16/10/2023

Exciting times! Looking forward to being part of the Fringe Festival....
