Steve McCormick - Louisa 27/11/2023

Now that I've got a bunch more followers over here, let's revisit the title track from the "Louisa" record. I wrote this years ago and actually recorded another version on my first album "Colorline."

But the groove on that version just wasn't what I had imagined.

The song has been a mainstay of my live shows ever since and deserved a proper do-over.

What do you all think?

Great review from our friends at Americana Highways. They've always had nice words for Steve McCormick releases, and also Love Me In The Dark, and now they've extended superlatives to Mark Joseph. Pretty sure they've put it all together!!! And if anything's missing, like yes Stanley "the Baron" Behrens did play with Canned Heat, Yo, then we will connect the dots further lol (this is fun!). That's Jerry Jemmott (Aretha, Wilson Pickett) on bass on half of the album, and Michael Jerome (Blind Boy of Alabama, Better Than Ezra) playing along with him. Ricky RC Cortes (John Mayall, Coco Montoya) plays upright on "Come On in My Kitchen," and of course that's yours truly playing slide guitar all over the place.

Man, it just keeps getting better! Thanks again AH!!!

Sh’mon…if it’s on it’s on and I’m there. Let’s sell some tix and get this perennial snow fest happening!

Hotter Than Hell 25/11/2023

I’m dusting off some old songs thinking about what to play at my upcoming solo show at the Cinema Bar. Diving deep on the “Sons of Guns” album tonight I ran through this one, written with Eric Lynn during our time with Richie Hayward and seemingly endless Topanga sunsets.

Who remembers this and what else from that record would you like to hear?

I am going release the whole thing for the digital streams in upcoming weeks so stay tuned for that!

We’ll have Stanley "the Baron" Behrens and Melvin Seals along for the ride so it’s gonna take on some dimension.

Palisade Peach - Mark Joseph (reviewed by Dave Franklin) - Dancing About Architecture 15/11/2023

Welcome words from Dancing About Architecture. Love Dave Franklin and luckily for us, he seems to dig our music!

Here we go to The Fitzgerald Theater for the big Mark Joseph reveal. Complete with Melvin Seals on B3.

Let’s go!!!

Palisade Peach - Mark Joseph (reviewed by Dave Franklin) - Dancing About Architecture With the memory of the upbeat and effervescent, and quite frankly, quite brilliant single “Daisy Train” still fresh in my memory, dropping the needle on the new one from Mark Joseph is something that I have been looking forward to for quite a while now. And here we are. It’s safe to say that P...

PREMIERE: "Deep Ellum Blues" by Mark Joseph ft. Melvin Seals [VIDEO] - Festy GoNuts! 04/11/2023

Check out the video for "Deep Ellum Blues (feat. Melvin Seals)."

This one was a joy to record, and we tapped my buddy Phil Bass to do the video, complete with lots of footage from Deep Ellum.

The incredible footage of Melvin was shot by Richard Waryan, who is the B3 sensei.

True story, the organ Melvin plays on this recording was known as the "Wallpaper B3," that he used for years with the Jerry Garcia Band. After Jerry passed it was mothballed until Rich himself came out to San Fran from Minneapolis to restore it.

Enjoy!

BTW, Mark Joseph is bringing the act to the The Mint LA on Nov 10 and then we will turn the ship around and go play the big release show at The Fitzgerald Theater in St. Paul, with Melvin playing in the band.

Quite a November in store!!

Music Street Journal - Music News & Reviews 20/10/2022

Hey folks here is a new review for the LOUISA record. Some of the nice quotes:

"call[s] to mind The Band and Little Feat"

"They seriously bring the funk"

"so tasty"

"The vocal arrangement is sublime."

Enjoy your day and let music invade your life!

Music Street Journal

Music Street Journal - Music News & Reviews I really like the retro sounds on this release. The album covers quite a bit of range within that basic concept. We get things that call to mind The Band and Little Feat and others that are more bluesy. At times funk comes into play, too. It's all effective, and this works well from start to finish.

Louisa – Steve McCormick (reviewed by Dave Franklin) 28/07/2022

I’ve always loved Dave Franklin’s writing. He just does it better than most. The fact that he digs my music tickles me even further.

Louisa – Steve McCormick (reviewed by Dave Franklin) For just the opening track alone, a sort of rootsy groover filled with sass and soul, Steve McCormick should be hoisted onto the shoulders of the assembled throng and carried like a lord through th…

Louisa, by Steve McCormick 28/06/2022

In lieu of an actual press release, I have decided to write some concise vignettes about my record to share the backstory. Here is one for the title track, "Louisa".
I wrote this song in the mid 80's. It is about an in*******al relationship, and the problems therein. I also recorded this song for my very first album "Colorline" (1989), the title of the record drawing from the lyrics: "She was black and he was white but they crossed the Colorline." I like to think that I write protest music, set into a sonic background where it might not be so obvious; this song is a great example of that.
The chorus "How you gonna do girl, when the heat is on" is apropos once again, and I do feel history repeating itself so that these semi-topical subjects become germane over and over, sadly. Here again I feel for women, particularly underprivileged women, having to fight against racial bigotry and right-to-life trends that are so unfair to them.
The song is anchored by the drumming of Mario Calire (happy belated Mario!) and the bass playing of Ricky RC Cortes, a New Orleans native. Also featured is the cajun washboard and accordion playing of Eddie Baytos. Arlan Oscar played B3 and vocals were provided by Heather Donavon, Niki J. Crawford, Mark Joseph and Anieza Bay.
