Helping people help cats
Street Cats of Vis exists to raise awareness about the plight of community cats on the island of Vis, in Croatia, and to organize resources in order to help people help these cats.

We're happy to donate our time to help cats, but we rely on you for funding in order to continue this life-saving work. Please contribute if you're able: every bit helps! streetcatsofvis.com/donate

Here are some of the cats we've helped in the past two weeks:

Beastie, who had surgery to remove his eyelashes because they were rolling in and scratching his eyes, a condition called entropion.

Ashii from Wellington, who was struggling to eat. She's now out of the dump and in our care, receiving antibiotics, pain relief and a liquid diet.

Kitten Maybe, who was found sick and struggling to survive on Stiniva beach: she's now in our care and doing well.

Gadget, who had all his teeth removed because they were rotten and causing him pain.

And a beautiful white boy from the riva who has horrible injuries to his tail and neck is now in our care, receiving antibiotics and pain relief.

Street cats are not the only animals on the island that need help. We sometimes get requests to help other animals, and we won't turn away any animal in need.

As we were leaving the vet last week, this sick lamb arrived. It was love at first sight!

She’s recovered quickly, gaining more and more strength, curiousity and personality every day.

Sivko is looking for a home

Sivko came to us with a badly broken foot – all the toes were broken and the bones exposed. It took almost two months for the skin to be completely repaired, and during this time he had to stay at the vet clinic. Despite all the vet’s efforts, his bones haven't healed completely and he still doesn’t have full use of the leg, but he’s getting around well and loves sleeping in the highest spot in the cat house.

Sivko is a really affectionate cat once he realizes you mean no harm. Because of his long stay at the vet clinic, he’s very suspicious of new people. He’s also very talkative and has a sweet voice. He’s not demanding in any way, and loves the company of other cats.

DOB: May 2023
Incoming to cat house: 28 Nov 2023
Sterlised/vaccinated
Kids: No
Dogs: No
Other cats: Yes
FIV: Unknown
Inside only (because of his foot)

We regularly care for more than 50 cats, and during the summer we're especially busy with requests to help even more cats. We can't do this work all alone: we need your help!

Do you have a little time to help us socialize, transport, feed or clean? We also appreciate donations of cat food and supplies, and of course financial donations to pay the vet bills.

If you're on Vis and would like to get involved, or would just like to come visit the cats, please get in contact with us at [email protected] or via WhatsApp at +64 21 254 5618

We need help!

At this time of year we have a lot of cats and kittens, but unfortunately not enough volunteer help.

We need help with feeding, cleaning and socializing, which is basically just spending time with the cats to get them used to human contact so they'll be ready for adoption.

If you have some spare time and would like to volunteer, please get in touch.

A mum and kittens update

Mum and babies are doing well. The first two days were touch-and-go for the two little boys, as for almost 24 hours they were in a coma-like state. Thankfully, the vet was on Vis and was able to give treatment that pulled them through, but they're still smaller than their sisters.

Mum finished treatment for some gastro issues which have now resolved completely.

We're so happy to have gotten them out of the dump - the whole family's chances of survival there were very low.

The kittens are growing bigger by the day! If you're interested in fostering or adopting, please get in touch.

Foster homes needed

We are in desperate need of temporary homes for kittens this summer.

This would involve caring for kittens for a few weeks to get them ready for adoption

We would provide everything needed: food, litter and equipment.

Without the help of the community, kittens will be left on the street, their fate unknown, as our resources are currently severely stretched.

Please like and share to raise visibility

For the past few days, Jonathan Webb of Strays in Squares has been following us and photographing the work we do to help street cats.

We're so grateful for the beautiful photos he's created for us to use for adoption profiles and our calendar, as well as for the awareness he seeks to bring to stray animals all over the world.

'My overall goal is to raise awareness of the value of stray animals in areas where they are mostly forgotten and reach people who remain largely indifferent to their plight.

To this end, I want this project to meaningfully contribute to the work of rescue organisations and activists by raising money, directing people to adoption centres, and by supplying evidence and resources to support positive legislative action.'

Mila is another cat in our care looking for a home: here's her story.

Poor Mila came to us in December of 2023 after struggling to recover from sterilization. She required two additional surgeries, and after a lot of care and treatment, she finally recovered, only to develop severe cat flu soon after that.

There were times we thought Mila wasn't going to make it. But she never gave up, and neither did we! Now she's finally a happy, healthy, sweet and crazy young cat!

You can find out more about Mila here:https://streetcatsofvis.com/adopt-mila/

We're committed to Mila's care for as long as it takes to find her a home. If you want to support her ongoing care, please donate here: https://streetcatsofvis.com/donate-2/

Finding Mila a home means we'll have space to help other cats in desperate need.

On Saturday we brought five street cats from Komiža to the vet for sterilizing: this girl was one of them. The vet noticed something disturbing while he was operating: he found a tiny metal pellet right beside one of her ovaries! He said these pellets are usually found just under the skin, as they come from a low-powered gun. We suspect that this cat was shot from very close proximity in order for the pellet to have ended up so deep within her body.

She will stay with us for further treatment, as her chances of infection are high.

Street cats have a hard life. Getting them spayed and neutered is the only way to stabilize the population and reduce suffering. Sterilizing street cats is free for the whole island: please contact us to find out more, or if you need help.

A new cat showed up at our Wellington (the local rubbish dump) feeding spot a few days ago. We immediately noticed she was an unsterilized female. Sadly, we also quickly realized she was full of milk.

We watched her and listened for her kittens, and yesterday we found them (right before a big storm!) in a cardboard box that someone had intentionally brought to Wellington and placed near our feeding area. This is better than dumping the kittens in the trash, but Wellington is dangerous and dirty, no place to raise kittens. We're deeply saddened that someone dumped this little family rather than having the mother sterilized before she could get pregnant in the first place.

The sterilization of street cats is free on Vis: if you know of a street cat who needs to be sterilized or castrated, please contact us.

The mother and her kittens are safe with us now, and we'll care for them, sterilize them and try to find them all homes in the near future.

Please share and donate here: https://streetcatsofvis.com/donate-2/ to help with their ongoing care.

We have many cats in need of loving homes. Plavi is one of them: here's his story.

Plavi came to us in terrible condition in April of 2023. Sadly, he's FIV positive: this means he took longer to recover from his initial illness and has had reoccurring health problems. He had bad cat flu, an ear infection and was so badly malnourished his fur was falling out. In addition to this, he has ongoing problems with mouth inflammation and has had to have three operations on his eyes. If left on the street he would have likely become blind.

You can find out more about Plavi here: https://streetcatsofvis.com/adopt-plavi/

We know his chances of adoption are poor, but we're committed to his lifelong care. If you want to support his ongoing care, please donate here: https://streetcatsofvis.com/donate-2/

Finding Plavi a home means we'll have space to help other cats in desperate need.

We have many cats in need of loving homes. Zi is one of them: here's his story.

A tourist notified us of Zi in May of 2023. He was completely blind due to terrible infections in both eyes. We caught him after a few attempts and took him to a vet for treatment. After a week of antibiotics, nutritional supplements and eye drops 10x daily, the vet was able to determine that one eye was already gone but that there was still some hope for the other eye. However, after several more months of treatment, the vet further determined that the remaining eye was not functional, deteriorating significantly and was causing him severe pain. The difficult but necessary decision was made to remove the remaining eye.

You can find our more about Zi here: https://streetcatsofvis.com/adopt-zi/ or how you can donate here: https://streetcatsofvis.com/donate-2/

Finding Zi a home means we'll have space to help more cats in desperate need who are still suffering on the street.

Meet Billy and Felix, besties who are looking for a home together. Felix is around three years old, Billy’s around one.

Felix is a super cuddly, sweet, and gentle boy who just melts into your arms. Billy is a sweet, curious, and playful cat who loves food! Both are great with other cats.

Felix came to us with all the skin dying on an injured back leg. Billy had a broken leg with bone sticking out. Both have now fully recovered, are vaccinated, house trained, have passports and are ready to travel.

Contact us if you’re interested, and share to help us find these sweet boys a home.

It's been a busy summer, and now we have several cats in search of loving homes. Finding homes for these cats means we can help more cats in desperate need. This summer we found many kittens at the rubbish dump and, sadly, some of them are still hiding there. We always look for them and hope to be able to rescue more.

Meet Zaja, a dark tabby kitten with a lush, longhair tail, and her pal Taši, a grey tabby kitten. Also Zi, a blind white cat who will soon have no eyes, and Plavi, a beautiful ginger.

These two female tabby kittens, Mrva and Mima, were found at the dump with their mother. It's a dangerous place, especially for kittens: we knew we had to get them out of there. They're around eight weeks old and shy when they first meet someone new, but are cute, cuddly and playful. They're free of parasites (internal and external), know how to use the toilet and have had their first vaccinations. Would you like to give these two cuties a home?

Sadly, mum will go back to the dump once she recovers from being sterilized. She gets along well with the colony, though, and will be well taken care of there.

This is little Tufi. A very worried and kind-hearted tourist brought her to us in terrible condition. We thought her eyes were damaged beyond repair, but after just a few weeks of treatment we saw a miracle: just look at her now! She’s still under treatment and will likely need surgery in the near future, but for now her eyes and at least some of her sight have been saved.

We receive queries from people all over Croatia who want to help cats and kittens they find while on holiday. We can’t thank these kind people enough for caring and taking time to find help. Unfortunately, we’re not in a position to help cats and kittens on the mainland: we don’t even have a full-time vet on Vis yet, and there are a great number of cats and kittens in need of our help on the island.

If you’re looking for an association or a vet that can help you help cats and kittens in need, we suggest you take a look at the links below: you should be able to find help.

Kitten season's here! Meet Morski and Žučka, who were found abandoned under a boat. Their eyes were infected, and being so young (around 4 weeks old) they're very vulnerable and need a lot of care. We quickly brought them in and got them fed, cleaned and comfortable. We need your support more than ever: if you can help us or if you want to help but don't know how, please get in touch.

Helping people help cats

Street Cats of Vis helps people help cats on the island of Vis, in Croatia. There is currently no vet on the island, but funding was recently granted for the sterilization of Vis street cats. There is still no government funding for the treatment of sick and injured street cats. If you’d like to help, you can go to https://donorbox.org/street-cats-of-vis.
