Investing in Therapies that Accelerate Health Equity
At Syridex Bio, we believe that access to quality healthcare should not be determined by socioeconomic status, race, geography, or any other demographic signifiers. The World Economic Forum recently highlighted the growing role of the private sector in addressing health inequities globally, detailing the impact of private sector investments and initiatives in expanding access to healthcare, reducing health disparities, and advancing health equity.
It's heartening to see that businesses are recognizing the critical link between health and economic prosperity and taking action to promote health equity. From investing in new medical treatments to supporting public health initiatives, the private sector has the power to drive positive change and make a meaningful impact on people's lives. However, the WEF also notes that there's still a long way to go in terms of addressing health inequities and achieving true health equity.
Syridex is proud to be part of a growing movement of private sector leaders who are taking action to advance health equity. Let's work together to create a world where everyone has access to the care they need. You can read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/eYgQPCrX
Health equity: Your health outlook depends on where you live The World Economic Forum is committed to advancing health equity through its Global Health Equity Network, focused on building public-private sector coalitions to advance health equity.

Did you know that breast cancer disproportionally affects women of color in the United States? Specifically, Triple Negative Breast Cancer (TNBC) is of concern for Black and Hispanic populations. These groups are more likely to be diagnosed with this aggressive cancer, and to have a higher mortality rate, compared to non-Hispanic white women. At Syridex Bio, our mission is to identify health inequities, such as those surrounding TNBC, and to invest in therapies that help close the gap among these underserved communities. Advancing health equity’ is a trendy concept in the healthcare industry right now, and many organizations trying to move the needle on change in this space have been turning to increased data collection and analysis as the first step forward. However, healthcare systems and organizations are already armed with enough data to begin making impactful change, as Forbes notes in a recent article.
At Syridex Bio, we are actively working to address health inequities by investing in therapies to treat diseases that disproportionately affect minority populations, effectively filling a gap in the healthcare market to provide access and treatment options for historically underserved communities. Everyone deserves the opportunity to live a healthy life. However, according to this recent World Economic Forum article, up to 70% of health outcome disparities are due to non-medical drivers of health – including factors like financial security, housing, and other social, economic, and environmental pressures. With this frame of reference, every company can contribute to advancing health equity by providing the benefits necessary for a healthy life, ensuring its offerings lead to equitable outcomes, and investing in community initiatives.
Recognizing this relationship between medical and non-medical factors affecting health, the CVS Health Foundation, for example, has invested $185 million in affordable housing in underserved communities to support health equity, while the Novo Nordisk Group has worked with more than 40 cities worldwide to address the systemic issues underlying obesity and type 2 diabetes. At this point, no one should be surprised by the vast disparities in the American healthcare system. In 1985, the Department of Health and Human Services published what is now referred to as the Heckler Report, a landmark study that quantified the gap between health outcomes of white populations and those of minority communities across the United States. As a result of those findings, awareness spread of this deeply embedded systemic problem.
The current reality is that awareness, at least on its own, has stimulated little change. Accelerating progress toward health equity will require unified action by a range of leaders and stakeholders, and it is increasingly clear that the investor community must play a central role.
