Mild fall and winter has lead to absolute bomb cover crop growth at the farm π±π₯π± Here comes daylight ππ
Second half of our Phase 2 expansion is nearly complete. We've added another 1200' of bed space to grow in next season along with 300 cubic yards of compost, and 4 successions of cover crop. Should be optimal. π±π±
Millions of aphids have a taken over our seed dill. Within two weeks thousands of ladybugs began to feast and pupate. We've lost our stock for fall pickles, but can hopefully still use the seed for next growing season. We've gained a healthy population of beneficials that will overwinter in our soil and lay their eggs in the spring. Nature is metal. The less we as humans interfere, the better. π
Our first crops went out this week at the Tsawwassen First Nation community farm. These roots and other veggies were distributed to the Elders luncheon, youth center, and daycare programs.
I'm really excited to finally have some production. This project has been a ton of work. It's tested me in ways much different than running Streamside Farm for myself.
Working within a tight budget, listening to community input, and constantly logging administrative hours have been paramount to the success so far. Very grateful to the TFN for trusting me in the creative process of this start up, and allowing me to put my vision into practice.
Hope y'all are having a rad summer π€

We have two youth work placements at the farm this summer. Jacky and Christian are from Tsawwassen First Nation and are learning some farm skills through mentorship and practical experience.
They've come with a great attitude and strong work ethic and I am happy to share my knowledge and experience with these young farmers! π¨βπΎ π

Hey all, I've got some new digs! π¨βπΎπΎ
April 1st I began a contract as Project Implementation Farmer for the Tsawwassen First Nation.
This project will be spearheading objectives such as food security, community involvement and knowledge sharing, and healthy seasonal eating within the TFN community.
The farm is on the traditional lands of Coast Salish, Tsawwassen First Nation people. The TFN signed a treaty with the federal government in 2009 and reclaimed their ancestral grounds.
This is a pilot project. It will include an operational market garden, a teaching garden, and a traditional medicine garden. As climate change and extreme weather events become more apparent, we hope this project can be used as template for other First Nation communities to tackle food security, traditional medicines, and knowledge exchange.
Thank you to the Earthwise Society for the recommendation.

Little Ones Are Growing
Hey folks!
I'd like to announce I'll be discontinuing operations at Streamside Farm.
The decision not to return was something I haven't taken lightly but ultimately the right one for me going forward.
Thanks to so many for the support over my last 5 years in Nova Scotia. To my friends, mentors, employees, business partners, farmers markets, and customers from the bottom of my heart. You made this venture an amazing success.
Thank you to Janie for her extreme generosity and kind heart. Thank you to Barra for keeping me grounded and talking me down off the ledge many times. Thank you to the Ohio community for making me feel welcome. Thank you to Eli for starting this journey together. And thank you to the Sisters of St. Martha and David and Jenn for bringing me to Antigonish and giving me opportunity.
When I moved East I had no experience market gardening. Over five years to think of the amount of people I've fed while learning this trade is absolutely exceptional. I'm leaving with my head held high and am extremely proud of what I have accomplished.
I'm currently finalizing the details of my next project, and will be excited to share it with you all very soon.
All the best,
Mac
Thank you to everyone that supports my small business. Hard to believe I've lived and farmed on the East Coast for 5 years now. Although I have no idea what the future holds, I'm trying to enjoy and savor every minute of farming on the Ohio river as generations of people have done before me on this unceded Mi'kmaq land.
Thank you to the 3 farmers markets I attend, my amazing wholesale and restauranteur friends, and everyone that supports me in general. Farming is a wild ride with so many highs and lows and I know so many of you are there with me and I am extremely grateful.
Ps - I had no idea my hair was this long until this pic was taken. The first pic of me on my instagram account of 4 years. Onwards..

Working with our friends on some potatoes, a crop that's never been scalable for our farm. Sharing workload, expenses, time, and experience with our friends and neighbors creates stronger farms and farming networks. All while building healthy community and establishing local food sustainability.
