I'm running for re-election to the MV School Board, and I humbly ask for your support. Please vote for me on May 17, 22, along with the school budget. Being on the school board this year, I've learned so much. The most important thing I've learned thus far is that I bring a different perspective to the board that reflects this community's students and parents that have not been represented. Everyone on the board is truly dedicated to our children while collaborating as a team with each other and the superintendent to accomplish our board goals. I want to continue to support the progress and success our district has achieved. I am excited about the direction the district is headed. It is important to me that we keep the education, safety, and well-being of each student at the forefront of our decisions. Please consider re-electing me to the school board.

I remember a parent telling me that during class her son in 3rd grade was called a slave by another student because he was black. The worst part, the teacher couldn’t explain to the them that slavery is a condition someone is forced in not who a person is. I’m happy to see teachers stepping up and setting things straight.

🌞🌞🌞 VERY COOL! Sally Mankoo’s ES kindergarteners recently learned about the Taíno culture and made petroglyphs, like those found in caves inhabited by Taínos!

Did you know: The Taíno were an Arawak people (a group of American Indians in northeastern South America) who were the indigenous people of the Caribbean and Florida?

In the late 15th century, they were the principal inhabitants of most of Cuba, Jamaica, Hispaniola (the Dominican Republic and Haiti), and Puerto Rico. The Taínos left behind petroglyphs, which are images created by incising, picking, carving, or abrading on the surface of the rock to create a form of rock art. With these images, archaeologists have been able to understand their way of living, customs and beliefs of the Taínos.

The Taínos worshiped and respected all living things and honored them in the form of carvings cut into rocks.

Deborah Roda - District Clerk
C/O Minisink Valley Central School District
PO Box 217, 2320 Route 6
Slate Hill, NY 10973

My name is Nakia Hickman, and I am a long-time resident of the Minisink Valley community, a proud mom of a 7th grader, and a supportive wife to an active NYPD Lieutenant. I am gainfully employed as the supervisor of Student Services Central at Orange County Community College. My years of experience working in the field of education has provided me with an acute understanding of what children, families, teachers, and the community-at-large needs to flourish successfully in the 21st century classroom.

Before my son was old enough to attend school, I was a member of the Otisville Parent Teachers Organization (PTO). I was cognizant even then that an early investment in the formidable tool of education would increase my son’s chances of successfully navigating his academic journey through the Minisink Valley School District. Realizing that education is the cornerstone of not only a successful professional career, but also of a fulfilling life, I became the president of the PTO at the Middletown Montessori School. In addition, for the past two-and-a-half years, I have been a member of the Minisink Valley School District’s Diversity Committee.
I would submit to you that after parenting, educating our children is undoubtedly the most important avocation in the world. As a member of this board, it is my fervent hope to perpetuate the theme of “excellence in education.” The journalist Sydney Harris once wrote “…the whole purpose of education is to turn mirrors into windows,” In other words, when you look into a mirror, all you see initially is what is immediately around you. However, when you expand that view, the mirror becomes transformed into a window and your view is transitioned into a vision. A vision is virtually endless and the concomitant possibilities of that vision are limitless. I am humbled and most eager to embark upon the sojourn toward “excellence in education” in the Minisink Valley School District

Hello, my name is Nakia Hickman, and I’m a long-time resident of the Minisink Valley community, a proud mom, and a crusader – trying to impact the landscape of our already progressive public-school system. I work at Suny Orange as a supervisor in Student Services Central. Not only do I have the opportunity to help students and parents navigate through the stressful and dreadful enrollment process, but I educate them on how to do it for themselves. My husband, Dr. Kishon Hickman, is a Lieutenant in the NYPD and an adjunct professor at SUNY Rockland. Together we live in Otisville with our 12yr old son in 7th grade and my mother-in-love, Eloise.
I hope to nurture our relationships to establish and sustain trust in our great community to foster student success. To me, trustworthiness is the basis of effective leadership, and a school board member is a steward of the well-being of students and our communities.
I have an organic view of education, and I am eager to help create the conditions for students to thrive, flourish, and grow. While on the board, I promise to work with our community to turn obstacles into opportunities, dead ends into doorways, fear into fuel, trouble into triumph, and occasionally wounds into wisdom. Thank you, and I would be honored to have your vote.
