McKee Guitars
I build custom acoustic and electric guitars and repair various stringed instruments. I've been in business for 20 years. I'm located Ottawa, IL.
Starting to make some progress.
I came out with this offset sound hole design almost a year ago. They have such an amazing sound. I have more ideas to develop this design in the future but need to do some R&D which takes time and money unfortunately.
Had to prewire the pots before I glued on the top. There is no control panel on the back because it is arched. The electronics will have to be fed through the pickup cavities like an arch top guitar.
Cutting out the top for the next build.
Another set of wood to be made into functional art.
Now that the lacquer is cured, I can start wet sanding.
Making a truss rod cover out of this beautiful piece of maple.
Once the lacquer is cured I can wet sand and buff it.
The two custom guitars I have been building have curly maple tops. This one will have a figured maple top.
The back is glued on the sides and ready for this beautiful curly maple top.
Getting it ready for the final coats of lacquer.
Replacing the white dots with abalone pearl dots.
Carving the top.
Spraying the base coats today.
The f holes are done, now I can start carving the top.
The last coats of sealer are on, tomorrow I will apply the other color to the back, sides, and neck.
Carving the inside of the back.
I can truly say this custom guitar is hand carved.
Applying the sealer coats today.
This ebony stain looks nice on the curly maple.
Can't wait to start carving on the top and back.
The neck is glued on. Next will be applying the finish.
The start of another custom guitar.
Doing the final sanding before applying the finish.
I have the holes drilled and now it is ready to be finish sanded.
