The ‘Work’ of Play

Children are at serious ‘work’ when they are at play.

It’s often brushed off as something sweet and endearing, but rarely looked upon in a similar realm as real valuable ‘work’ and learning.

This is noticeable in the decline of access to real, uninterrupted play as children grow, in favour of more formalities and instruction.

Even for young teens, and furthermore for adults too, play is where much of real work is done.
It’s the experimental zone, the give it a try zone. The work it through, think it up, test it out, challenge it, tweak it, immerse in it, lose yourself, and be yourself in it zone…

It’s the one space, assuming no agenda or limitations that the mind and personality can flourish and explore, and go where it’s heart and mind want to take it.

As a parent it’s the times, if you pause to watch, you can gain so much about your child.

When they are left to their devices, what do they get drawn to.
How much attention do they give different things, and in what way.
Do they prefer to play alone, in groups. Are they designers or constructors. Facilitators or co-operatives.

So much magic and learning happens in play.
The simple task, of building a den, as an example, consumed 2 hours of time today.

3 children negotiating, deliberating, designing, working with structure, adaptions, possibilities, conflicts, resolutions and more.

It looks like chaotic destruction, and very little value.
But for a child this is their place of freedom to discover.

Setting them up for figuring out themselves, their talents, and meandering through their struggles. Its their preparation for that boardroom meeting, or first interview. For a moment of conflict, or pursuit. For the application of thought or focus, or acceptance of mistakes.

True, quality play can’t be measured, judged or assessed.
Yet the lack of these confines in play, is the key that prepares them best, for all in their life will, ultimately be, measured, judged, and assessed.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.

Just some of the newly qualified and re qualified Archery GB teachers, trained by ArcheryCoaches.co.uk Wild Harvest School of Self-Reliance over the last two days. Two new archery teachers for wild harvest too amongst them. Note my son Matthias, 17, on the far right; smashed not just his motorbike license but archery teaching qualification in one week as well as starting new job and back to college ! Well done all 11 archery teachers and a big thanks to Kath and Jean of archery coaches U.K for training and re/qualifying us.

👉 If a young person in your life is getting their results today, remind them ➡️ they have so many amazing qualities that make up the person they are, beyond their grades. If they didn't get the results they expected, remind them to be kind to themselves.

Let's make some twig ornaments!
What you'll need:
🌲 Twigs
🎨 String

Tie 3 twigs together into a triangle and decorate the inside with more string. make a loop for the top to hang it off of anything you want.

It's finished, these are loads of fun to make and every single one is unique to you. Tag us in your creations, we'd love to see them.

This is the first week's holiday club video by Manchester Diocese and looks at the Parable of the Sower 🌱 All you will need are some balloons🎈, A4 paper and pens 📝 and scissors✂️. This is a lovely way to spend 25 minutes, especially on a wet, rainy Friday 🌧👧👦
