Shhhhhh! Secret (not so secret) Christmas gift for my favorite twin nieces! They are only a couple months old so thankfully I am not ruining the surprise, but I am humbled that their mama asked me to create something for their nursery. Both are 5x7” watercolor on paper featuring their fur sister and the other representing butterfly kisses for many years to come.
Packed up and headed out this door! I feel honored to create not one but two pieces for this sweet family. This little crab is based on a piece I painted a couple of years ago, but made some changes to reflect their style. Thank you, thank you!

These little pomegranates are heading to their new home today! Something about tossing a bunch of fruit on the table and painting away. Never gets old for me. 10”x24” Acrylic on Wooden panel.

Sweet Summer Corn
12"X12", Acrylic on Canvas
I have an Uncle. Don’t we all have that Uncle? This Uncle is beyond generous with his time that he gives to my little boys, talents of farming, and the fruits that literally come from all his labor. A couple of weeks ago, I left his house with a huge bag of sweet summer corn. It is the best corn. Period. I may be biased since I know my Uncle grew it, and my boys shucked it on the picnic table all afternoon, but regardless it is the best. Fresh corn screams summer time, and it is probably the only vegetable that my boys do not fight me to eat. In fact, they race each other to see how fast they can finish it. Spoiler, my husband always wins.
No we do not eat the corn with the husks on, but they were so pretty in the summer sun I had to bring them inside to paint. While these two little cobs did not make it into the pot that night, I love this reflection of work, family and summer all in one little piece!
About the Collection: A Note From the Artist
The most precious memories and conversations happen around the table with a meal, a melted popsicle or a couple of slices of leftover bacon in the toaster oven. Hey, when you know you know! These meals do not have to be over the top (although I do love a gourmet dish), but oftentimes are the simplest, with the most significance.
I find that more and more I draw connections to people through different foods, flavors, and scents. When I prepare a meal, snack, or even beverage for myself or my family I am reminded of who I shared these with in the past. These memories have become more and more precious as people I have loved, respected, and cherished have moved on…or even started to grow up.
This series of paintings may seem simple, or reminiscent of pop art ideals; but, for me, they focus more on connections. Connections to people, cultures, seasons, experiences and keeping this in the forefront of my thoughts. This “plate” series will be released every Friday for the next couple of months through McIntosh Cottage Antiques.
Part 4: Summer's Bounty
This is the final installation of the “What’s on your plate?” series… for now. These plates are filled with local fruits and vegetables arranged on the most beautiful McIntosh Antiques and Gifts plates and fabrics. These next pieces will incorporate the best that summer has to offer and what you will find on my plates most nights of summer.

Sliced Tomatoes
12"X12", Acrylic on Canvas
If you don’t love tomatoes, I don’t think that we can be friends. I mean between sauce, pies, sandwiches and caprese salads - what's not to love? Especially in the summer!
My mother-in-law has a favorite person she buys her tomatoes from every year, Mr. Bubba. Since I have known her the past couple of years, she always makes a special trip to buy some of his tomatoes. It has been a tradition of hers and many others for years. Although Mr. Bubba passed away this past year, his legacy is living on through his son who is now growing tomatoes using all of the skills passed down from his late father. I love how something as “seemingly” simple as growing tomatoes brings people together and honors those we have lost.
Ps. That beautiful plate and those fun blue and white napkins can be purchased from McIntosh Cottage!

Pears
12"X12", Acrylic on Canvas
The last of the “What’s on your plate?” series! This series has been cathartic for me. Reminiscing all of the little memories of family, friends and experiences that I hold so close to my heart. These little pears are no different. (Although, if you are an animal lover you may want to keep scrolling...)
My grandfather was also a little bit of a farmer. He had a couple of acres of land that he planted every year. On his property he also had scuppernong grape vines, fig trees and at least two pear trees. Those pear trees were huge and in the late summer they would be heavy with pears. What drove my grandfather the most crazy was when he would see the squirrels eating his pears. Worst of all the squirrels would take just a couple of bites out of them and then throw them to the earth. This infuriated him. Just call him Mr. MacGregor, because before you knew it he had an electric fence all the way around both trees and those little squirrels did not stand a chance. They would start to climb the fence and immediately be shocked back a couple of feet before running away. Watching this from the screened in porch was the best entertainment, because you know my brother and I would not have any control over the television while Grandmama was watching her “stories.” So I end this little series with a laugh (hopefully) and a piece that exudes the colors of the late summer sun.
Those beautiful ochre linens and plates are also available at McIntosh Antiques and Gifts.

Peaches
12"X12", Acrylic on Canvas
My first job out of college was an art education position in the small town of Gilbert, SC. The people that I worked with quickly became like family and all of those 800+ students taught me more than I could have imagined. This small town is known for peaches and most importantly the Peach Festival. They celebrate all things peach and America! As I was creating this piece, I couldn’t help but recollect all of the peach memorabilia around the school…art contests for the kids celebrating peaches and America and getting out on those last days of school and driving to the peach stand before heading back to the “city.” All of the people (old and young, here and not) that helped shape me into an artist, educator and person today. I am so grateful for those formative years developing as an educator and young adult with such a positive group at my side.
Ps. That beautiful plate and lavender linens can also be purchased at McIntosh. I am having the best time painting those plates!

Strawberries
12"X12", Acrylic on Canvas
Throughout the seasons, we make an effort to go and pick as much of the fresh produce as we can. Apples, blueberries, peaches, but of course spring brings strawberries! We love to head out to Cottle Farms and get their fresh berries. Watching the boys run through the fields and fill their bellies with as many fresh berries as they can brings me so much joy. Simple. Pure. Joy. Of course when we get home, we continue to eat bowls full of them with lots of Cool Whip. Just like my Oma used to give us. Even in her old age, she would make her way out to the different strawberry patches getting buckets and buckets of strawberries.

Peruvian Tea
6”X6”, Acrylic on Canvas, 2023
We love to travel. We love experiencing different cultures, foods and ways of life. This little cup of joy is reminiscent of our trip to Peru. We did a lot of very touristy things, but one of my favorite parts was staying with a family on the floating islands of Lake Titicaca. I know, I know it wasn’t how they “really” lived, however, waking up with 25 lbs of blankets stacked on top of you and a cup of this freshly brewed Peruvian tea was somewhat magical!

Part 2: Behold the Simple, Doughnut Trio
Do you ever open a doughnut box that has been sitting on the counter just to find someone has taken a bite out of the one that you wanted? Like no one would notice… who does that? One of my children, that's who. I have three wonderfully unique little boys that have the patience of a fly. Whenever I treat them to doughnuts, one of their sweet little hands is immediately in the box the second I turn around. This little doughnut trio represents them and all of their half eaten doughnuts that I am blessed with finding.

BLT
8”X8”, Acrylic on Canvas, 2023
I am originally from what used to be the small town of Summerville. Since I left nearly 20 years ago (that is crazy by the way), the town seems to have literally tripled. Seriously, it is hard to even recognize it anymore. We grew up on the outskirts and going into town there was a 4 way stop with nothing but trees on every corner except for one. One corner was a small gas station/mini mart/restaurant called Knightsville Corner Store. This little stop had tasty fried chicken and potato wedges, but my Dad would sometimes treat us to breakfast. They had the best bacon, egg and cheese sandwiches. I know this is a BLT, but as I was making these for supper the other night I couldn’t help but be reminded of those mornings where my dad would take me to get breakfast. Of course since Father’s Day is coming up, it makes me extra sentimental. We would sit there and scarf them down in the car before going to school. I always ordered extra mayo on mine and if you look closely at the bottom of this painting that detail has not changed.

This piece is big. Each canvas is 2’x4’ and represents a wonderful day of exploring Schoodic Peninsula in Maine with some of the best friends years ago. It’s a little messy and a little abstract, but finished!

5”X5”, Framed Watercolor on Paper (8"X8"), 2023
Part 2: Behold the Simple, Two Eggs
The first thing that I remember ever learning to cook was scrambled eggs, quickly followed by box mac and cheese. I recall being so proud of myself for breaking the eggs on my own and turning on the oven. Not to say that I was a scrambled egg “eggspert,” but I could make some mean salty and fluffy eggs in my little frying pan. Flash forward twenty years and I met my husband. As we start cooking together, he explains that he wants his eggs runny, yokes not broken… I had never cooked eggs any other way. Something silly like this slightly intimidated me for whatever reason and looking back this was the first thing that I learned to cook for my husband. Lets just say I broke a few yokes in the learning process, but now “most” days I get them right.

Part 2: Behold the Simple, Leftover Bacon
So much more than just “bacon on a plate.” Growing up in the south nothing screams breakfast quite like the smell of bacon frying in the pan. The smell wafts through the entire house and let's be honest, you smell those delicious greasy slices all day long (maybe even the next day). Now that I am grown(ish), I typically save the bacon for the weekends, because who has time to fry bacon before school? However, my Grandmama cooked bacon for my Granddaddy nearly every morning. How do I know this? I was lucky enough to spend the younger part of my childhood right down the road, and any day that I would stop by there would always be a couple of slices of leftover bacon on a plate in the toaster oven. While my little brother may have raided their Hershey kiss basket in the pantry, I went straight for the toaster oven to gobble up a piece (or two) of that leftover bacon. As more cousins blessed our family, it became a race on family gatherings of who would get the leftover bacon.

8”X8”, Acrylic on Canvas, 2023
A simple go to sandwich that tastes best on white bread with grape jelly! My “fancy” boys prefer strawberry jelly. Occasionally, as depicted here, I like to forgo the plastic kids plates and serve them on my Oma’s china. Why? Why not? Presentation really amps up this simple sandwich making them feel extra special for no reason. It is the little things… the simple things.

Part 2: Behold the Simple, Butter & Jelly Toast
One thing that I wish I didn’t have to be so aware of? Carbs. I love carbs in all forms, and looking at my artworks over the next couple of weeks you will probably say the same. The simplicity of toast and jelly can be devoured at any time of day. This piece was inspired by a photograph my cousin sent to me when I was discussing this series with her. The funny part is I remember her only eating jelly toast (and chicken nuggets) for the first probably 6 years of her life!
