When I'm on a podcast I usually talk branding, finding courage, and overcoming the struggles of entrepreneurship.

But when Aaron had me on his pod we mainly talked fatherhood and relationships! A challenge all achievers have to balance. I love connecting with others in this way. Sometimes you've got to be open to a different type of talk, a new question, a different way to think - get out of your lane - it will help you grow.

Thank you for the overwhelming support for the last episode I did with Steven Segal. Steven provided many practical suggestions about how we can work with anxiety and depression in an increasingly individualist society.

Whether we call it the Great Re-evaluation Arianna Huffington; or the Human Energy Crisis mentioned recently by Microsoft’s Chief People Officer Kathleen Hogan; burn-out is real. More than half of the generation Z workforce who are entering the workforce for the first time said they are struggling. It’s alarming.

Next up on Transformative Purpose, we’ve got an exciting episode with podcast host from We Do Hard Things, Mark Drager

Mark and I spoke for more than 90 minutes and frankly it could have gone for much longer. Lots of wit from Mark and fun fact - Mark and I are both introverts.

I am celebrating this new connection today; I would have never met Mark if I hadn’t started my podcast.

Positive action leads to positive change.

As Mark puts it, pursue your passion at all costs.

Stay tuned. 💛

The LIE Behind WORKING HARD For SUCCESS and the TRUTH About INTUITION

We’ve all heard it; hell, you’ve probably had the same thought yourself. It’s a lie that perpetuates the highest of highs and the lowest of lows for every entrepreneur and creative. It’s a lie that causes great people to question what they’re doing, if they have what it takes, and often makes people give up too soon.

“If you work hard enough, you will succeed.” Or put another way, “There’s no way I’m going to fail because I’ll outwork everyone else…”

And while every successful person had to work hard to get where they are, hard work is never enough. You’ve got to work hard in the areas that excite you most.

Today’s guest learned this truth the hard way.

Vishen Lakhiani is the founder of Mindvalley, the award-winning education movement with millions of students worldwide, he’s the author of the New York Times Business Best Seller The Code of the Extraordinary Mind and The Buddha and the Badass: The Secret Spiritual Art of Succeeding at Work, and is a speaker and activist.

In this episode Vishen and Mark talk:

Why hard work is never enough
The role intuition plays in finding your passions
Why Vishen quit his job at Microsoft in the first week to become an out-of-work actor
Why he walked away from a multimillion-dollar VC-backed startup
How the seed of every great thing he’s built (including a $100-million+ company) came from chasing down one of his passions
Welcome to We Do Hard Things, the show about facing fears, taking big risks and chasing down dreams.

On today's show, how and why this man decided to dedicate years of his life to what some would call absurd living experiments that included:

- Reading the entire Encyclopedia Britannica in a quest to learn everything in the world
- Spending a year following the hundreds of rules in the Bible, as literally as possible
- And trying to thank every single person involved in producing his morning cup of coffee

Q for you → What change has improved your quality of life so much that you wish you had done it sooner?

For me, it was prioritizing my health and fitness.

Focusing on sleep, hydration, movement, diet, and time unplugging are all great things - but the real work for me was prioritizing these things over the craziness that life can become.

With so many competing priorities, it's easy to put work, family, and the need to get stuff done over our health.

And besides, once you put all your focus and energy into everything else when you have a free moment, you don't have the energy or willpower to go for a run…or eat clean…or skip the iced coffee for a glass of water.

But what I learned, only after doing it, is that when you schedule time for exercise, create a sleep schedule and stick to it, drink lots of water, and cut out sugar, you actually have more energy to do all those other things.

Somehow, the little things like needing to run upstairs and grab something are no big deal.

Spending a few hours of focused time on work feels effortless because it's nowhere near as hard as that workout you did earlier that day.

Completing your household chores or playing with your kids...
Spending all day on your feet...
Going to bed without feeling bloated...
Sleeping soundly...
Waking up refreshed...
Staying focused throughout the afternoon...
..they all just kind of get easier.

That's my story. Looking back, waiting until my late 30's to figure this out was a mistake.

What's something you wish you had done sooner?

Mark

Do you thank people for their work?

Quick backstory…I was in North Carolina helping Ed Mylett’s team with the launch of his book.

Meaning I spent the day backstage with all the speakers.

We’re talking about a green room full of A-listers…one of whom was Marie Forleo.

Now, I really admire Marie Forleo. Her openness, spirit, and completely BS-free message resonates with me…and her book, Everything Is Figureoutable was one of the first books to help me deal with the uncertainty that is our future.

Living with anxiety means that I often carry this impending sense of doom and the unrelenting worry that "future me" won’t handle challenges that are thrown my way.

I know this is silly. Looking back I've tackled every challenge thrown my way. And I’ve grown stronger because of the things I’ve faced.

But looking forward, I really struggle to remember that.

Back to Marie Forleo and her book - backstage I fought an internal battle:

Should I tell her how much her book meant to me?
Would that be unprofessional?
Am I just injecting myself into her day, when really…she's there to get a job done?

Finally, I decided I would thank her for her work…and in doing so I learned a valuable lesson.

After sharing with Marie what her book meant to me, thanking her for putting in the time and effort it takes to write a book, and admitting that I didn’t know if it was proper for me to tell her all this stuff…

She turned to me and said, “authors always like to hear that their work has helped.”

And that’s the lesson I learned…if you appreciate someone, the effort they put in, the work they’ve done, the help they’ve offered…no matter how successful they may be…thank them.

Tell them you appreciate them. Thank them for the effort they’ve put in. Share how their work has impacted you. Circle back around with people who have offered help and share the impact it’s made.

No matter how successful someone may appear, they’re still just like you and me. They’re still creating something from nothing and putting their heart and soul into the work.

So thank them.

For many, anxiety is crippling. And its prevalence and continued growth in our daily lives is not only keeping us from becoming the people we are destined to become - it’s pushing many of us to turn to substances for some form of relief.

On today’s show, I talk about how to turn anxiety into a superpower with Adam Hill.

Having faced anxiety for most of his life, in college Adam turned to alcohol to help him come out of his shell and become a bolder version of himself. But like so many of us who struggle with anxiety self-medicating can lead to addictive patterns, and while it appears to work at first, it can lead to destructive tendencies.

After hitting rock bottom, Adam not only turned his life around, but he found a way to use his anxiety to serve himself and others.

More About Adam Hill

Adam Hill is an elite amateur triathlete and coach. Since beginning with the sport in 2013, he has quickly risen to the top of the age group ranks, achieving multiple podiums at each distance, and qualifying for the Ironman World Championships in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.

He has inspired many through his story of transformation. At one time unhealthy, fearful, and drowning in the depths of alcoholism, Adam battled anxiety daily. Today he demonstrates through his transformation and continuing example that a healthy, happy, and fit lifestyle is available to anyone who is willing to let go of unhealthy habits, and accept the gift of new life.

Through his coaching platform, Extra Life Fitness, Adam trains people how to adopt healthy habits that lead to peak physical fitness, greater joy and peace, and optimal mental performance. He is also available to speak about his experience with transformation, overcoming anxiety and addiction, and peak performance.

Adam has developed tools and systems to turn anxiety into a superpower, and it is his goal to share those systems with those who still suffer.

Since learning to reframe his mindset, he has elevated his life in all areas, including relationships, business, leadership, and health, and he’s devoted to helping others do the same. It is his mission to help people articulate their values and purpose, set bold and audacious goals, and execute an effective plan to achieve them.
