This year, Block Party will feature over 70 musical performers from many genres - indie, rock, metal, jazz, folk, pop, and more. As always, Block Party mixes some of the biggest names in the Korean indie scene with some brand-new and exciting talent.

This June, we pay tribute to the greatest indie album of all time - The Smiths - The Queen is Dead.

Released in June of 1986, The Queen is Dead created a template for the indie scene that is still inspiring bands today. With its brutally honest lyrics, broody energy, and surprisingly dance rhythms, The Queen is Dead remains a must-hear for indie music fans.

To celebrate, we’ll be bringing together some indie bands whose music is inspired by The Smiths - Sombee (), Erøtic Wørms Exhibitiøn (), and Ilgyne ().

We’ll also have Smiths mega fan DJ Jamie playing a mix of indie music - from The Smiths to New Order to Radiohead to Stone Roses and everything in between.

The lovely people at Ovantgarde will be preparing a special menu of Smiths-related cocktails. More info to come.

HAPPY DAJUNG DAY!

Today, singer-songwriter Dajung (.online) returned with debut EP, Unlearn.

The EP, her first release since 2021, sees the performer build on previous work to create a bigger, brighter sound. Just like 2021's J-Knife, Unlearn explores deeply personal thoughts.

The EP is available on music platforms now.

"National borders do not matter any more for music. Style, ability, outfits; these things are not so different these days between countries. What is different is the kind of things that kind of things that bands from each country sing about. Punk bands like to write songs about the issues in their society, and Korean bands do that, too. We sing about Korean society."

The wonderland ride of Lazybone - Korea's OG ska punk band — Platform Magazine After the release of their new single, Wonderland, Lazybone talk to us about how they keep their energy.

"Sometimes in the drift of everyday life," says Hannah, "it’s easy to feel alone and helpless in the face of such crushing evil and oppression. I think one of the only antidotes to that is community. That’s what I value about Films for Freedom: the opportunity to be inspired by other like-minded people and draw strength from them to continue onward in the struggle. The fight to free Palestine is not a passing trend."

Films for Freedom () is a Seoul-based screening collective hoping to use the power of film to raise money for Palestine while creating a community of pro-Palestine activists in Korea. Ahead of their next screening on April 26th, co-organisers Hannah and Sarah talk to us about their mission to promote freedom through films.
