This Thursday evening, the Forsyth Freedom Fighters organization, the Forsyth chapter of the Carolina Federation political education movement, hosted their fourth and final Freedom Gathering that welcomed all working class citizens of Winston-Salem from each and every side of town.We then began the gathering with a introduction from Brandon and Jenn. Afterwards, we then read about the KC Tenant organization and how they were able to get a $50M bill passed, go from 3 members in 2019 to 4,500 in 2022, plus other great things that they were able to accomplish in the short time that they used! We hope to see the same people again on September 16th!

Members of the Carolina Federation-Forsyth Freedom Federation hosted the county’s first ever Freedom Gathering last Thursday. Members of that community, as well as folks in the surrounding communities, introduced each other to themselves in a heartwarming manner. Volunteers accompanied kids as a member of the Carolina Federation spoke about their reasons for joining. We then went on to the focal points of the meeting, including what the Carolina Federation was about, what our vision is, and what we’ve accomplished as a state-wide organization. We’re building on our momentum from organizing in counties throughout the state, questioning, demanding & getting our needs met within working class communities. When the end of the meeting came, the staff and the members of the community pledged to meet again in two weeks, and a common ground was made from everyone in the gathering.

Last week, launched our 2023 Freedom Summer. This ambitious program brings together all of the best of what our organization has experimented with over the last 4 years; we are recruiting and developing over a dozen movement leaders to have tens of thousands of conversations with our people across the state by building strong community through our Freedom Gatherings and strong county level chapter organization. By building exemplary movement leaders, deep community and powerful organization, we will have the power to elect movement aligned champions, to win transformative issue campaigns and to forge powerful partnerships.

Freedom Summer is our newest innovative approach at building a new political majority that is both rooted in a culture of belonging and powerful enough to win elections and govern our state. Want to join us in making Freedom Summer a success in Forsyth? DM to learn more!

We proudly endorse Dr. Amber Baker for NC State House!

Dr. Baker is an educator with over 25 years of experience, passionate about ensuring public education is fully funded, including Universal Pre-K and competitive pay for teachers and support workers.

She has committed to publicly supporting and actively organizing for virtually every state-level policy in our Carolina Federation People’s Platform: from an Economy that works For All of us (increasing the minimum wage and ensuring the wealthy pay their fair share in taxes), to Education For All (funding education to the national average, along with NC educators’ pay), to Homes For All (including comprehensive rent stabilization and a Universal Tenant’s Bill of Rights).

Families already struggling from pandemic work to survive in the midst of W-S fertilizer plant fire 09/02/2022

Via Triad City Beat "The majority of people in the Weaver Fertilizer blast zone were Winston-Salem’s Black and Brown working class. They were already hurting when a disaster that they never asked for forced them from their homes and to spend resources that were already stretched to their thinnest, all during a historical pandemic that also disproportionately affects their communities."

These are their stories, courtesy of Chad Nance.

Donations can be made to Love Out Loud to help affected families."

For those impacted by the fire in Winston-Salem

04/02/2022

CITIZEN NOTIFICATION SYSTEM
The City of Winston-Salem can send you alerts if you sign up for it's Citizen Notification System.
The city has a notification system to allow citizens to receive emergency and non-emergency notifications for their landlines or by text, email or voice on their cellphone, provided they sign up to receive notifications.
Emergency notifications provide an important means of alerting citizens of missing persons, criminal activity or hazardous conditions, such as flooding, fires, a chemical spill or a water main break in their neighborhoods. Finding a way to reach people who only have cellphones has become an important public safety issue. The Citizen Notification System gives officials the ability to reach people, but citizens must register.
ABOUT THE SYSTEM
The system sends out notifications not only by phone, but by email and text, if so desired. It also gives citizens the option to receive notifications about special meetings, and about notices and news, such as reminders when garbage collection is postponed by a holiday or disrupted by a winter storm.
Citizens can sign up by clicking this link, https://www.cityofws.org/173/Citizen-Notification-System. The system requires that users provide their address, because notifications are sent out based on where people live. Citizens can register up to four phone numbers, each with an option to receive text alerts at that number. They can also enter a primary and an optional secondary email.
MAPS
A map on the sign-up page pinpoints the address entered in the system, so that citizens can verify that the system has their correct location. Once the information is entered, a verification email is sent to the primary email account, with a link to activate the account.
INFORMATION UPDATES
Citizens can update their information and adjust their notifications at any time by logging back into the system with a password that they set up as part of the process.

The Forsyth County Department of Public Health, in conjunction with North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Public Health, N.C. Department of Environmental Quality’s Division of Water Resources are issuing a precautionary advisory pending a water quality investigation for Monarcas Creek and downstream sections of Mill and Muddy Creeks from the Monarcas Creek at 4440 N Cherry St. to, and including, the Muddy Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant.

A fire at 4440 N Cherry St. has potentially impacted Monarcas Creek due to runoff from the site from rainfall and firefighting efforts. There is currently an ongoing investigation to determine the extent of the impacts from this fire to the identified waterways. While this investigation is ongoing, we are issuing a recreational water advisory for the section of Monarcas Creek and the downstream sections of Mill Creek, and Muddy Creek ending at the Muddy Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant.

All three raw water intakes used by WSFC Utilities water treatment plants are upstream from the Weaver runoff impacting Monarcas, Mill and Muddy Creeks. The drinking water supply remains safe.

Monarcas Creek is the primary waterway impacted from the fire 4440 N Cherry St. Monarcas Creek flows into Mill Creek which eventually flows into Muddy Creek. If you notice any plumes, sheens, or fish kills in these water ways avoid coming into contact with these waters and report these conditions to 336-776-9800.

Until the water is tested and declared safe, environmental and public health officials recommend:

- Avoid swimming, wading or fishing in this section of Muddy Creek until further notice.

- Avoid skin contact with water, soil and sediment in or near the river.

- If skin comes in contact with contaminated sediment or water, thoroughly wash the affected area with soap and water.

- If you are concerned that you, your family, and/or pets have been exposed to these waterways contact your healthcare provider or veterinarian.

For further information please contact the Occupational and Environmental Epidemiology Branch at 919-707-5910.

Voter purging is a real and very common practice. While it’s aim is supposed to keep records up to date, it’s often used for more nefarious reasons like VOTER SUPPRESSION. If you’re already registered take a second to double check that it’s still the case. Don’t let a flawed system keep you from voting for progress.
