Under the currently proposed budget, private school vouchers would get funding increases of 70% in the first year, while traditional public schools would receive only 5%. Tell your senator to prioritize public schools in the state budget.

The currently proposed budget increases spending on private school vouchers by 70%, while increasing traditional public school funding, where 90% of Hoosier students attend, by only 5%.

Click here to email your legislators about resetting the budget. The vast majority of kids are educated in public schools and that's where the vast majority of our education tax dollars need to go.

Btw, under the current proposed budget, many public school corporations take a funding CUT over the next two years.

Urgent: NPE Action Alert! Take action today! Tell President to STOP THE TESTS! Call and email the White House and USDOE today!

In December of 2019, candidate Joe Biden promised that if elected, he would stop standardized testing. Yet the U.S. Department of Education has announced that states must test students in the midst of the pandemic. That is a wrongheaded policy that puts data first and children last. Write Joe Biden. Tell him to step in and cancel the tests.

1. Please call the White House switchboard at 202-456-1414.

Here is a suggested script.

“My name is (name) from (state). I am calling to ask the President to keep his promise about eliminating standardized testing. Forcing schools to administer annual tests undermines the administration’s call to support our students’ social-emotional and mental health in this time of crisis. The tests must be canceled. Period.”

2. Then call the U.S. Department of Education at this number 800-872-5327. Press 3.

Here is a suggested script.

“My name is (name) from (state). I strongly oppose Mr. Rosenblum’s recent letter that forces schools to administer annual tests this year. All of our schools’ efforts must be used to support our students’ social-emotional and mental health in this time of crisis. Test results will be meaningless. Please tell Dr. Cardona that tests must be canceled. Period.”

3. Finally, send an email to the White House by clicking here (letter prepared by our friends at NYC Opt Out). https://networkforpubliceducation.org/send-your-email-to-the-white-house-stop-the-tests/

Please write the House Education Committee before Wednesday! HB1005, the most dangerous bill to public education, will be read and voted on this Wednesday. Please write every member of this committee to let them know you oppose the use of public dollars going to private schools, further weakening the dollars that go to public schools. Over a two year period, this increase to vouchers would cost taxpayers 2,000,000 dollars. Is this fiscally responsible at this moment when we are in the midst of a pandemic? Is it wise to funnel money to schools where only 10% of students attend? Please see comments for additional information as well as addresses for the House Education Committee.

What we’re asking you to do:

STEP 1: Send messages now to your own legislators and to House Education Committee members. Tell them you oppose House Bill 1005 because:

The $202 million price tag for only the first two years is huge and should instead be directed to boosting teacher pay.

HB 1005 would divert millions from public schools at a time they need stable support.

It is wrong in this economic climate to prioritize giving extra tax money to high income private school parents who are already able to pay private school tuition.

Delete Chapters 1 through 6 from HB 1005 to prevent public dollars from going to home schools and independent unaccredited schools with no accountability

STEP 2: Email the Governor

Ask Governor Holcomb to oppose the Education Savings Accounts and voucher expansion in HB 1005 if he is sincere in saying in his State of the State address: “those (parental choice) options shouldn’t come at the expense of the public school system, which educates 90% of Hoosier children.”

Voucher expansion and Education Savings Accounts would divert at least $202 million from public schools.

From Hoosier Voices for Public Education

"Here we go!! Think the timing was purposeful? Exactly one year to the day from the rally!!

NOTE: She is being called the FIRST Secretary of Education not Superintendent of PUBLIC Instruction."

Today I announced Dr. Katie Jenner will serve as Indiana’s first secretary of education.

This is an incredibly important time for education in Indiana. Dr. Katie Jenner has focused her entire career on investing in students, teachers and staff, and she will continue to build the relationships needed to move our state forward in constructive ways. As Indiana’s Secretary of Education, Dr. Jenner’s certification, work at nearly every level of education and her remarkable depth of experience will lead our state into this exciting next chapter.

Dr. Jenner currently serves as my senior education advisor. Her first position in K-12 public education was as a Career and Technical Education teacher in Kentucky beginning in 2005. From 2009 to 2018, she worked for Madison Consolidated Schools in Indiana as a school administrator and district administrator. In 2018 she joined Ivy Tech Community College as vice president of K-12 Initiatives and Statewide Partnerships, where she built statewide college strategies among K-12 schools, career centers, and Ivy Tech.

Dr. Jenner earned her undergraduate degree from Transylvania University, her master’s degree in education from the University of Kentucky, an MBA from Indiana State University and her doctorate of education from the University of Kentucky.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to further serve the people of Indiana,” Dr. Jenner said. “My priorities are to ensure high quality education for all students and families, and to provide solution-focused support for our teachers and educational leaders. We have great opportunity ahead in Indiana, and I can’t wait to roll up my sleeves and work hand in hand with students, educators and stakeholder partners across the state.”

Initially, in her new role as secretary of education, Dr. Jenner will focus on the following:

➡️ Provide successful education experiences so student learning continues during the COVID-19 pandemic and improves throughout the recovery.

➡️ Lead a top-notch team that supports schools as they provide opportunities for students as they prepare for their next step in education, training, military service, or direct employment. Close collaboration will be built with local communities, families, and stakeholders across Indiana’s full education continuum – early learning (Pre-K), K-12, postsecondary, and the workforce.

➡️ Attract talented Hoosiers to the teaching profession by working closely with Indiana’s schools of education, K-12 school leaders, local communities and Indiana employers to make teaching a more diverse, competitive and fulfilling profession. Great teachers help ensure the long-term health, success and economic security of our state.

➡️ Maximize the Department of Education’s support and service to schools by creating a dynamic, flexible and data-driven network that supports learning-focused innovation, informs teachers’ professional development, and equips students with the skills needed to succeed in the future.

By law, the new role of the secretary of education begins on Jan. 11, 2021.

“They want me out. That doesn’t hurt my feelings right now,” she told Chalkbeat. “What is alarming is the direction, from the federal level on down, that Republicans are going regarding education. I just simply do not agree with it… I believe in public education. That’s just who I am, and I make no apologies for that.”
