Weight bias is defined as “negative weight-related attitudes, beliefs, assumptions, and judgments toward individuals who are overweight or obese.”⁣

February 28th - March 6th is “Obesity Care Week.” Obesity care week was created as a public health initiative to develop a society that is more understanding, accepting, and respectful of the complexities of obesity. Today’s focus is “weight bias.” ⁣

It is crucial to recognize weight bias in both society and healthcare. We can have weight bias toward ourselves and toward others. While someone’s weight is highly determined by his/her diet and activity choices, these are not the ONLY driving forces. There are other controlling factors that are not as obvious. Addressing and conquering a weight problem takes both internal and external forces. ⁣

Examples are: ⁣
- Diet/Exercise plans. ⁣
- Identifying your why.⁣
- Psychology services to address underlying psychiatric disorders or trauma.⁣
- Medical provider, who can monitor health and make medication changes. ⁣

All that to say we must not judge ourselves or others on outward appearance. 1 Samuel 16:7 says - But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” ⁣

My prayer is that we will become a society that looks at others through the lens of Jesus 🙌🏼⁣

Today I took my two kiddos - Merritt 3️⃣ & Grigsby 1️⃣ - to their well child checks at Diagnostic Clinic of Longview. It was a circus taking both kids by myself, but these visits prompted me think about my own role as a primary care physician. ⁣

Unfortunately, the American healthcare system has a history of promoting problem solving, rather than problem preventing. We ABSOLUTELY need medical specialists, but we must also emphasize primary/preventive care. For this reason, I know God called me to a career in Family Medicine with a special focus on Obesity and Lifestyle Medicine. ⁣

We see medical providers, at least yearly, as children. These visits focus on growth, milestones, and lifestyle counseling. If we have these visits in childhood, why not continue them into adulthood? Most American adults do not establish care with a primary care provider until a problem exists. As a family medicine doc, I strive to empower my patients to both solve and prevent problems. Whether you see me for general primary care or weight/lifestyle management, I will walk alongside you to provide tools and encouragement. Let’s become the best versions of the people God created. ⁣

While this post highlighted physical health, I would be remiss if I did not give credit to the ABSOLUTE NECESSITY of spiritual health. ⁣

1 Timothy 4:8 says, “for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.” ⁣

Physical and spiritual health have greater merit than physical health alone. ⁣
