Guscio di conchiglia Tridacna squamosa scolpito ed inciso. Trovato nell'etrusca Vulci, risale al 700-600 a.C., cm 13.7 x 21.7, British Museum, Londra.
Il volto di una donna sporge dall'apice di questo guscio di conchiglia e le increspature naturali della valva formano quasi un mantello svolazzante sulla sua schiena: era usato come contenitore di una pasta profumata oppure per mescolare il trucco.
La conchiglia però non è stata elaborata dagli etruschi, perché il volto femminile e le decorazioni ora appena visibili incise lungo il bordo interno, che recano appena leggere tracce di colore nero, sono state realizzate nella zona che ora è Siria, Libano o Israele, che risentiva anche dell'influenza egizia.
Nel disegno della parte interna infatti appaiono due sfingi alate poste in un registro sul bordo, dei boccioli e fiori di loto nello spazio sovrastante le sfingi e una fascia di triangoli tratteggiati o lineari incorniciati da linee parallele che definiscono il bordo verso il centro.
Questi oggetti, probabilmente tramite i commercianti fenici, sono stati esportati verso l'Italia e nella direzione opposta, verso l'attuale Iraq, ma anche il tipo di conchiglia proveniva da lontano, infatti la tridacna squamosa ha un ampio areale che si estende dal mar Rosso e dalle aree costiere dell'Africa orientale, attraverso l'Indo-Pacifico e arrivando fino alle isole Marshall ed alla Polinesia.
È una specie tipica delle barriere coralline, che solitamente si trova in profondità, incastrata tra le rocce o le madrepore e che talora può svilupparsi anche su fondali sabbiosi; la conchiglia, in questo caso non troppo grande, può raggiungere invece dimensioni notevoli, fino ai 40 cm di lunghezza, ma anche molto più grande.
