“South Korea is promoting offshore wind to play a key role in achieving the nation’s decarbonisation target. Powered by world-class shipbuilding and offshore plant industries, South Korea is now preparing to take a leap in becoming the strongest floating offshore wind player in the world,” says Woojin Choi, Corio’s Head of South Korea.

Corio is developing almost 3 GW of offshore wind in South Korea across two project portfolios:

The 2.5+ GW BadaEnergy portfolio driven by Corio, TotalEnergies and SK Ecoplant will develop the 1.5 GW Gray Whale project, which is expected to become one of the largest floating offshore wind developments in the world.

Offshore wind will be a central part of South Korea’s decarbonisation journey. This week Woojin and other members of Corio’s team have attended the inaugural APAC Offshore Wind and Green Hydrogen summit.

31/08/2023

Corio CEO Jonathan Cole spoke at the APAC Offshore Wind and Green Hydrogen Summit, emphasising the importance of offshore wind to the evolving energy landscape: “In a decarbonised world, offshore wind is an essential part of that mix and practically every country with a coastline is looking at ways to bring it into the mix”. This will require:

Strategic Planning: Jonathan advocated for a strategic approach to developer selection for offshore wind competitions, with a focus on strategic development goals, not just identifying the highest bidder.

Streamlined Permitting: Streamlining and consolidation of planning processes could significantly reduce existing deployment delays, as long as this doesn’t come at the expense of environmental and social factors.

Proactive Investment: Investing early in onshore grid systems can avoid slowdowns. Creating interconnected offshore networks can increase resilience and cost-effectiveness.

Fair Pricing: Ensuring pricing for offshore wind reflects its true value to society, as well as increased cost pressures, is necessary to create a sustainable market.

“If we slow down now, we’re really going to feel the effects at the end of this decade and into the next decade when we really need offshore wind power most,” Jonathan added.

At Corio Generation, we are committed to driving the offshore wind industry forward. Together, we can create a brighter, cleaner, and more sustainable future. Learn more: www.coriogeneration.com
