Bad Gals Singing Club
Glasgow-based feminist choir raising our voices to smash the patriarchy!
Hello! I hope everyone is faring ok. It's sometimes really difficult to know how you feel about these world changing events. It's taken me a while to think of how to put together my feelings on what this school's tiny tiny role in all of this is, but here goes.
Our goal is to connect as many people with music as possible in an inclusive and positive way. We believe having some guidance in finding your own path in music can lead to a lot of joy and a great way to counter things that can be stressful. Here are three ways we are continuing to do this.
- The most obvious one is we've moved all our lessons online to Zoom and Skype. These lessons will run on as normal. Thank you so much to the overwhelming amount of people who have stuck with us, and to those who we'll hopefully see again when this calms down. If you are interested in one-to-one lessons with any of our talented tutors or joining an adult or kids' ukulele group, do give us a shout at [email protected]. Instruments include: Guitar, Bass, Piano, Flute, Ukulele and Voice.
- Ukulele queen (aka Sophie) and I have started to do free weekly Facebook live ukulele classes where we teach a simple song on Fridays 1-2pm. These cases are grand for anyone of any age - absolutely anyone's welcome to give it a go. There's a bunch available from the last few weeks - just look at previous posts for more info and a group you can join 😀.
- I've started to put together some video chats and performances with artists and music industry professionals. I'll be passing these on to students as part of their weekly practise, but I'll also be putting them up on here for anyone to watch. I guess the goal here is to highlight the diversity in the music industry - and that there are a lot of ways to get involved. Who knows what will actually come from talking to people though! 😂. The first episode (out later today!) is with incredible guitarist/songwriter Mayor Stubbs and we have ones on the way with Beth Black, founder of Bad Gals Singing Club (amongst a million other things!) and Scotland's most loved DJ, DJ MC Mallorca Lee!
The main thing is - whether or not anything we are offering is of use to you - do consider getting involved with music. Pick up an instrument. Sing. It makes things better.
