Mr. Kosner is an internet pioneer and four-decade veteran of sports media. Today, he is an investor and advisor in sports tech startups and president of Kosner Media, a digital media and sports consultancy. In 2018, John and the late NBA Commissioner Emeritus David Stern created Micromanagement Ventures, a portfolio of sports technology start-ups. Previously, John led digital media at ESPN from 2003-2017, after stints at SportsIllustrated, the NBA, where he was in charge of U.S. broadcasting. In his 21 years at the company, Kosner built ESPN into the world’s leading digital sports destination – a powerhouse in short- and long-form editorial content, streaming, social media, podcasting, fantasy sports and direct-to-consumer.

Mr. Ramnani is the founder and chief investment officer of the hedge fund 93 East Capital. Prior to founding 93, Mr. Ramnani served as a chief economist at JP Morgan Chase. In addition, he served as a strategist with the investment portfolio of Japanese Insurer Sompo International managing over $10 billion.

Thank you to the many members who attended our Summer Forum! In our talks with these speakers, we covered a variety of topics. Mr. Kosner discussed the economics of sports, especially in light of some recent events, like the COVID-19 pandemic, and how it has led to an increase in sports streaming. He then discussed how streaming has had various implications for the sports industry, such as economic growth. Lastly, Mr. Kosner ended off by providing members with some important key-points and tips for career development, and answered the many questions members had. Next, our second speaker, Manoj Ramnani, discussed the importance of investing, especially its role in many different private equity sectors. Here, he led a discussion on a deeper analysis on the role of COVID-19, and how the pandemic impacted various equity sectors, and consequently, the US economy.

In “Networking Skills with Annie Hopkins,” on April 23rd, Ms. Hopkins discussed the importance of networking and why one should network. As a first step to networking, she encouraged members to create a LinkedIn profile. She recommended starting with a 20-minute informational interview with a person of interest. In addition, Ms. Hopkins provided members with a sample email that they can use and taught members how to have a networking conversation, which includes having questions prepared, taking notes during the conversation, and asking follow-up questions to facilitate the conversation. Finally, she concluded with a Q&A.

Ms. Hopkins graduated from Georgetown with a B.S. in International Affairs and has many years of experience in recruiting. She was the Vice President of Diversity Recruiting at Goldman Sachs, and she served as Director of Campus Recruitment at Jopwell. Dr. Gaudiano also spoke about the downsides of capitalism, notably how the greed in capitalism is the reason for which we see much of the maltreatment of certain groups of people, and how capitalism, at its core, has been ripped away from societal responsibility.

Poverty, education, and hunger have been ongoing issues in our world. Deteriorating conditions across multiple countries have led to the death of hundreds of thousands, annually. Recent natural disasters have only contributed to these statistics. With a growing elderly population, the task of conquering societal problems has been passed to the next generation. Although substantial change has been made, in many cases, this change is temporary. To create meaningful and long-lasting change, our society requires increased participation and dedication to sustainable development and initiatives. This event featured speakers Amir Dossal and Manjula Dissanayake, exploring topics such as impact investing, social economics, and sustainable development.

Mr. Amir Dossal, a 25-veteran at the United Nations and founder of the Global Partnerships Forum, taught members about impact investing and how, with his non-profit, he makes educated decisions about whom to partner with. He spoke on his experience at the UN and his strategies for mobilizing private sector investment in sustainable initiatives. Mr. Manjula Dissanayake, a former investment banker and founder of Educate Lanka, shared with members his personal experiences in creating organizations that benefit others. He spoke about how his childhood in Sri Lanka and his life-threatening injuries later heavily shaped him and spurred him to create his own non-profits.
