The Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) is a filter that acts as a diesel soot trap to prevent many of the dirt particles that are found in the exhaust gasses from escaping into the atmosphere.

In South Africa, our fuel quality is poor and it leads to more dirty particles in modern diesel engine emissions. Because of this the DPF has to work much harder than in many other parts of the world and it clogs up quicker.

To prevent the DPF from clogging up, modern exhaust systems will burn the particulates at regular intervals while you are driving at highway-speeds

Apart from the poor fuel quality mentioned before, the DPF can also become clogged from the burnt ash that forms when the DPF cleans itself.

Many people spend countless hours in traffic, which does not allow the DPF to clean itself. Over time this will also block the DPF.

We cannot ignore the DPF when it becomes blocked. It will cause your warning lights to light up and cause the vehicle to go into limp mode.

When in limp mode you can barely drive your vehicle, as the engine tries to protect itself from major damage.

Most vehicles from 2000 onwards can be remapped, however there are some exceptions.

Generally speaking we get the best results from turbo charged vehicles. Non turbo vehicles can also benefit from our Ecu remap but the improvements are much less than on turbo charged vehicles.

Turbo petrol vehicles gain a lot of power when remapped.

Turbo diesel vehicles gain a good amount of power but also have the benefit of fuel consumption improvement.

Many people say that ECU remapping doesn’t affect fuel usage, however this is not technically true.

If the driver drives aggressively using all the added power the economy will decrease.
If you drive the vehicle in an economic way the fuel economy will get better, about 1-2km/l.
A good example of this could be that the improvement in torque produced by the engine after remapping means the driver no longer has to drop down a gear to maintain speed on an incline or may not have to change gear as frequently in traffic.
All of these little things add up to an improvement in fuel economy.
