Southwest Shroomery
A purveyor of high quality mycology supplies, active spores, gourmet , and medicinal mushroom cultur
You may have heard about 4/20, but are you celebrating 9/20? We're offering 20% off store-wide to celebrate!
Today is all about psychedelics, like the compounds found in magic mushrooms. Used for hundreds (maybe thousands) of years in ritual and traditional medicine, psilocybin has been recently been rediscovered in Western science and medicine interested in treating mental health conditions like PTSD and addiction. As more and more studies show the value of using psychedelics in medicine, local movements are growing in support of decriminalizing psilocybin-producing mushrooms.
Today is a day of education and a call for change and there are plenty of ways to celebrate! Learn about mushrooms and their medicinal compounds. Get in touch with local politicians and share your thoughts. Get nerdy with us and have a look at mushroom spores under the microscope.

While maybe not the most icon fungi found in New Mexico during our monsoons (check our last post about Amanita Muscaria!) the Boletus Rubriceps a.k.a "Porcini" is our favorite to eat!
This meaty mushroom can often be found erupting through moss in the higher elevation areas in New Mexico during the monsoon season.
When in season, we sell freshly foraged boletes!
For those having a porcini craving in the off season, we offer them dried as well.
Interested in finding some of your own? Join our mailing list and be the first to learn of our first ever SWS-hosted foray next year!
With the first frost in Albuquerque last night, foraging & gardening season has officially come to an end.
One of the most iconic fungi we see in New Mexico is the Amanita Muscaria, also known as the Fly Agaric.
Arguably the most iconic toadstool species, the fly agaric, is a large white-gilled, white-spotted, usually red mushroom, and is one of the most recognizable and widely encountered in popular culture. This includes video game design, such as the extensive use of a recognizable Amanita muscaria in the Mario franchise and its Super Mushroom power up.
Looking to add this beautiful sample to your library? Look no further! https://southwestshroomery.com/products/amanita-muscaria
The Tarragon Oyster mushroom is closely related to Pleurotus ostreatus. In fact, it's so closely related that one of the few difference in this species is the strong tarragon smell!
This culture has incredibly fragile mycelium, but the taste is worth the effort!

Did you know that King Oysters, properly prepared, can be a drop in replacement for sea scallops?! Recipe write up coming soon!!
We have a fast growing, aggressive culture available of this beautiful, flavorful mushroom.

My favorite addition to a delicious bowl of hot & sour soup: Enoki!
Enoki is a mushroom that is well-known for its role in Japanese cuisine, where it is also known as Enokitake. Commercially farmed enoki is a small-capped, long, thin white mushroom. They are grown in darkness and in high CO2 environments to encourage lengthy growth and to keep them pale.
Found commonly across the globe, this saprophytic mushroom is extremely temperature hardy, being able to withstand even single digit temperatures!
It's also quite tasty, and if prepared right, adds a lovely element of CRONCH to some soup.
We're proud to offer this delicious variety on Agar Plate, in Liquid Culture, or on agar wedges.

We're back this afternoon with another lovely strain of Ps. cubensis: Z-Strain!
Not much is known about the emergence of the Z Strain mushroom. Like many mushroom strains, decades of underground cultivation make tracing the exact lineage and history of this fungus difficult. Z Strain spores have been traded online for at least two decadesβperhaps longer if youβre able to dive into the nebulous early days of the internet.
It's morel season in a few places across the US! Finding some in the woods? We're always looking for new samples, shoot us a message!
Morchella elata is a species of fungus in the family Morchellaceae. It is one of many related species commonly known as black morels, and until 2012 the name M. elata was broadly applied to black morels throughout the globe. Like most members of the genus, M. elata is a popular edible fungus and is sought by many mushroom hunters.
Another of our favorite beginner friendly Ps. cubensis varieties is B+.
The origins of the B Plus strain of magic mushrooms is shrouded in mystery, as many strains of psilocybin cubensis are. Some believe that the strain is a mutation created by a Florida-based cultivator named Mr. G. Others believe that the B Plus strain might have been growing in the wild somewhere in the United States. Regardless of its less-than-reliable origin story, the B Plus strain is an incredible mushroom to study.
This variety is included in our Microscopy Start Kit and available for purchase in both print and syringe formats.
One of the most striking variety of gourmet mushrooms we carry is Lactarius indigo, or the Indigo Milk Cap.
The fruiting body color ranges from dark blue in fresh specimens to pale blue-gray in older ones. The milk, or latex, that oozes when the mushroom tissue is cut or broken β a feature common to all members of the genus Lactarius β is also indigo blue, but slowly turns green upon exposure to air.
We sell this variety solely on agar plates currently, but will be releasing liquid culture samples in the near future.
We are also looking to purchase dried or preserved samples of this mushroom from local foragers. If you or someone you know has any, reach out!

Today we're showing off our most popular cubensis variety: Golden Teachers.
Golden Teacher are amongst the most popular mushroom strains in the world to study and hunt for in the wild. First appearing some time in the 1980s, the exact origin of the Golden Teacher mushroom remains unknown. It is commonly believed that the Golden Teacher mushroom was discovered on a farm in Georgia.
All of our Ps. cubensis and other active species are to be used exclusively for microscopy and taxonomical purposes. Please never discuss or use our products for cultivation.
Just restocked our most popular gourmet variety, Hericium erinaceus, a.k.a. Lion's Mane! π¦π
Lion's Mane is an edible and medicinal mushroom belonging to the tooth fungus group. Native to North America, Europe and Asia it can be identified by its long spines (greater than 1 cm length), its appearance on hardwoods and its tendency to grow a single clump of dangling spines.
We offer Lion's Mane in Agar Plate and Liquid Culture form, as well as a double extracted tincture.
Our most recently added variety π Shooting Stars βοΈ
The variety is said to have come from notorious Keeper. Shooting Stars have lighter than usual coloring. Their stems are skinny and yet quite firm. Shooting Stars is said to produce tall fruitβitβs no wonder how this variety got itβs fantastic name! These mushrooms have gills which vary from whitish to purple-brown.
All of our Ps. Cubensis or other active species are to be used exclusively for research purposes.
Our Oyster Starter Kits are back in stock! Get a fantastic deal on three of our fastest growing and most successful gourmet varieties. This kit comes with growing instructions for all three included oyster varieties: Pink, Pearl, and Blue.

A rainy day in Albuquerque makes me think of all of the amazing finds we had in the woods this year!
Pictured is a gorgeous Sarcodon imbricatus, or a Hawks Wing.
These are absolutely delicious mushrooms, and can be enjoyed in any number of ways. My favorite preparation is marinated in soy sauce and worcestershire for a few hours, them grilled on high heat.
What's your favorite preparation for foraged fungi?
Found gorgeous Hawk's Wing specimens in the wood this weekend!

Lactarius indigo, commonly known as the indigo milk cap, the indigo (or blue) lactarius, or the blue milk mushroom, is a species of agaric fungus in the family Russulaceae. A widely distributed species, it grows naturally in eastern North America, East Asia, and Central America; it has also been reported in southern France.
L. indigo grows on the ground in both deciduous and coniferous forests, where it forms mycorrhizal associations with a broad range of trees. The fruit body color ranges from dark blue in fresh specimens to pale blue-gray in older ones. The milk, or latex, that oozes when the mushroom tissue is cut or broken β a feature common to all members of the genus Lactarius β is also indigo blue, but slowly turns green upon exposure to air.
This beautiful mushroom is available to purchase in culture form in our store, currently available in Agar Plate and Liquid Culture forms.
