We honour and remember all Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and 2SLBGTQI+ People. Today, and always.

Today on the National Day of Awareness and Action for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA+ People (also known as Red Dress Day), the NCTR remembers, honours, and respects those whose lives have been lost due to violence, apathy, and inaction.

We also recognize and honour their families, friends, and communities who tirelessly fight for justice for their loved ones amid grief. Indigenous women, girls, and gender-diverse people have a right to live in dignity and safety, and the continuation of violence cannot be tolerated. We all have a responsibility to fulfill the 231 Calls for Justice and ensure safety and justice for the women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA+ people in our communities — and we are all part of the solution.

I just saw this news about the LeBron James tweet with the pic of the officer who killed Ma'Khia Bryant and the words "you're next " . The response to it is super interesting. All of these people started raising hell because they thought it was inciting violence. Why did their minds go right violence? Because LeBron James is black. Why didn't they think that he is going to support the Bryan family with respect to activism and legal means? Because LeBron James is Black.

COVID-19 mortality rate higher in neighbourhoods with more visible minorities: StatsCan | CBC News 18/11/2020

This just shows, our governments need to focus their attention, their planning, and their action in a way that takes race (as described in the data) into account:

"In Toronto, the data showed the Black, South Asian, Arab, Southeast Asian and Latin American communities were over-represented among COVID-19 cases. Whites and East Asians were under-represented. It also showed households with incomes under $50,000 to be over-represented among confirmed cases."

Thoughts?

The Saturday Debate: Is it ever acceptable to use the N-word in a classroom? 15/11/2020

A very interesting read. Do you think the use of the n-word has a place in academic conversations? What if the teacher/professor is black? Is it ok then?

Dear Friends,

I'm going to write a question below and I want you to write, in the comments, the first word-only one word- that comes to mind. Also, don't look at what anyone else wrote before putting down your thought.

Here's the statement:

What is the first word that comes to mind when you hear the word "race" ?

This might be one of the parts of settlement, but the real significance is in the reforming of police training and action, as well as eliminating the no-knock warrant.

Oh, and did I mention those officers should be arrested and charged for murder of Breonna Taylor?

Good teaching ahead!

Educators, parents work to embed the Black experience into school curriculum | CBC News Anti-Black racism protests have put renewed focus on how little Black Canadians are reflected in school curriculum. 08/09/2020

We are SKIN, a group of 4 Canadians; Michael Anthony, Christilene Elie, Haley Rose, and Dave Watkins who are all connected through our professional lives in the education system. We came together to create this podcast through our shared value in human rights and our shared belief that racism is wrong and that it is not enough for people to be bystanders to racism. We need to be actively anti-racist. This is not an easy thing.

Racism looks like many different things. Racism can be the use of a single word or phrase. It can be a remark. It can be discrimination against a student in a school or against an adult in a workplace. It can be an assault of physical nature. It can be the killing of a person. All because of the colour of their skin.

This podcast will feature episodes that come out every two weeks. They will centre around current events, theories of racism, and attitudes toward racism. We will have engaging conversations amongst ourselves and will also be bringing special guests into the podcast as we explore and learn more about how to be anti-racist.

Thank you for joining our Skin podcast family. We are so happy to have you as part of this journey.
