In the article ”Support Structures Behind Russian Art Residencies” we examine how internal trends on banning and overregulating any international financial support for the civil society and the arts, combined with the Western sanctions, further restrictions, and self-sanctions of international companies made the situation with availability of financing extremely difficult for Russia’s civil society and art sectors, especially after the Russian full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
We also examine the main funding sources of art residencies before and after the war, as well as look into the interest of the residency field in the environmental agenda following Reside/Sustain’s focus on various aspects of sustainability.

Following Reside/Sustain research trip to MASSIA residency, project participant Adel Kim shares her experience of the visit, as well as some important insights she took with her from this trip.
“This leads to my own enlightenment that MASSIA gave me as a gift and that I believe, is firmly connected to the aspect of ecological sustainability. There is so much talk about residencies being … a home, or at least a “feels-like-home” space for residents. But no place is home until you are responsible for it; until you start to care.
The same logic can be applied to the environment: if we think we are not in charge, we cannot change anything…we are not at home … What would change if we took more personal responsibility for small actions in the areas that are close to us?”

Reside/Sustain continues exploring the different aspects of sustainability and arranging visits to residencies, extending the geographical scope of this research to Estonia 🇪🇪
This October, we are travelling to in Massiaru. MASSIA is a self-organised residency and project space which welcomes individuals and groups of practitioners and researchers from any field. It does not have a selection process and has no staff. MASSIA invites residents to co-create the conditions of working and living together.
In the course of 3 days, Reside/Sustain and MASSIA team, as well as invited residency practitioners and theoreticians from Finland will activate joint discussions touching upon the questions of holistic sustainable approaches in running residencies, share their experiences and perspectives providing a space to share the mismatch of expectations and results, failures, and possibilities of self-care for residency providers.
In the framework of the trip, Reside/Sustain will also present its activities for the Estonian Creative Residencies Network LOORE.
The outcomes and findings of the research trip will be shared at the Reside/Sustain website later on, and presented in the form of a toolkit for residency practitioners.

Miina Hujala’s text “Calculations of effect and impact. Exercises of carbon calculators” explores the question of how one can one estimate the impact of one’s own actions in terms of sustainability.
Alongside proving information about different platforms and tools, Miina uses various carbon calculators to estimate the environmental impact of her own travels: land-based (trains, ferries, and cars) VS air travel.
The text is a good example of how individuals can calculate their carbon footprint in terms of travelling, and become more mindful of the choices they make.

To support residential initiatives launched by Russian cultural actors outside of Russia following the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Reside/Sustain is initiating a collaboration with Typography Apartment in Yerevan.
As we mention in our recent interview with Marianna Kruchinski, Typography collective relocated to Yerevan after the start of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. In June 2022, they organized a residency for Russian cultural workers who oppose the regime in a rental apartment. One of the primary objectives of Typography's collective project is to create a safe space outside of Russia where artists are not obligated to create artworks or develop projects. The residency offers opportunities for artists to get to know the local context, continue personal exploration, or simply take time to rest and recuperate. It provides free accommodation and covers travel expenses. Since June 2022, over 70 cultural workers have participated in the residency.
In the context of this partnership, Reside/Sustain is supporting the travels of Lisa Tyulyubaeva and Asya Fomina to Yerevan. Lisa and Asya are artists and activists from Arkhangelsk. They also coordinate the work of horizontal associatio. Pesochnitsa.
Lisa Tyulyubaeva worsk with the topics of ecology, creativity, and local identity. She actively participates in the art scene of her region. The distincive featire of Lisa's art is the research approach she implements to representing a complex past. Her educational journey combines both music and visual arts, influencing her artistic practice. In addition to her artistic activities, Lisa also teaches history of contemporary music and practices of contemporary art, among others.
Asya Fomina works with organic materials, plants, and other natural objects. When creating artworks that do not include organic elements, she employs techniques of recycling as one of the topics central for her in her work is ecological consciousness. Asya also addresses the topics related to difficult legacy (repressions and colonization of the North of Russia), Pomor culture, personal experiences, and reflections.

Mayana Nasybullova's residency in Aks Sado, supported by Reside/Sustain, has come to an end.
This is how Mayana describes her experience:
💬“I was completely captivated by the work on the installation and shooting of the movie. The silent and calm atmosphere of Aks Sado, together with its hasteless pace, gave me a chance to immerse myself in the work completely, without having to worry about everyday life and family matters. In the residency, I turned into an «artist-in-vacuum» and closely worked on the project. Thus, my contact with the environment of Ulugbek and Tashkent was more professional than explorational in nature this time. And this was exactly what I needed!”
We thank for the past month and look forward to seeing “Nostalgia for Nothing”– the project artist worked on during her residency.

What is the role of a circular economy, if we want to be uniform?
Has the uniformity of the standardisation been pursued in creating residencies as habitats? What do we want to achieve by providing the same facilities for everyone, the same set-up?
Miina Hujala ponders these questions in her article “Assemblages and supply chains: IKEA cup as a residency emblem?”

In the framework of cooperation with emergency artist residency Ask Sado in Tashkent, Reside/Sustain is supporting the residency of Mayana Nasybullova.
Mayana is a Russian-born artist based in Tbilisi who mainly works with sculptural objects and installations.
In her practice, she explores ways to combine materials and mediums. According to the artist, material has the power to change the meaning of the work, that is why she often repeats her casts using different materials.
In the artist’s view, anything can become an object: a bust of Lenin, toys, urban surfaces, and various cultural artifacts that turn into universal totems.
According to Mayana, her time in Ask Sado is an opportunity for her to finish the project that she envisioned three years ago: “The residency is a chance for me to actively work on an exhibition project entitled “Nostalgia for Nothing” that concludes my large series of works on post-Soviet totemism. The project will be on view next year, on the centenary of Lenin’s – a figure who continues to embody the prejudices, fears, and hopes of the post-Soviet culture.”

To support residential initiatives launched by Russian cultural actors outside of Russia following the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Reside/Sustain is starting cooperation with Aks Sado – emergency artist residency in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
Ask Sado is a targeted programme for artists and cultural workers who find themselves in vulnerable situations and are unable to continue their work in previous locations. The initiative was launched by curators and founders of Centre for Culture CC19 in Novosibirsk Pjotr Zherebtsov and Angelina Burliuk.
The emergency residency offers artists free accommodation, working grants, and a place to continue their artistic practice. It is seen as a safe heaven and a possible space for collaborations between the residents and cultural exchange with the local artists.
“Aks sado” literally translates from Uzbek as “reverse sound” or simply “echo”, which creates a broad framework for interpreting the artistic practices of the participants.
In the context of this partnership, Reside/Sustain is supporting the residency of Tbilisi-based artist Mayana Nasybullova. We will soon share more information on Mayana’s professional background, topics she deals with in her practice, and her plans for the residency in Tashkent.

After the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by Russia, part of the Typography team relocated to Yerevan. There, in a rental apartment, members of the collective organised a residency for Russian cultural workers opposing the regime.
💬”We organised a residency in our apartment for those who continue to live and work in russia but need a break. We wanted to create situations that would otherwise be impossible for the residents, who have neither the opportunity nor the mental strength to make them happen.”

⚫️ The Environmental Dilemma: Why Is Residency Practice Important? (2020), Res Artis
Is it acceptable to continue physical exchanges when we are all aware of the environmental footprint caused by international travel? Why is residency practice important? Join the conversation between Lucy Orta, artist and professor, University of the Arts London, and Marco Maria Zanin, artist and researcher, Humus Interdisciplinary.
⚫️ In Praise Of Laziness: Prioritizing Rest in Support of Ukraine: Julia Asperska & Res Artis (2022)
Sustainability goes far beyond environmental issues. It implies various sides of social and economical situations, also personal and mental – especially in times of crisis. How to care for, support, and help artists at risk without burning out? What productive power rest, non-doing, and even laziness have? In this discussion, Poland-based Julia Asperska talks about the Sanatorium Project, curated by herself and Karolina Wycisk (Performat Foundation). The Sanatorium Project was designed as a relief residency for arts professionals working at the front line of support for Ukrainian refugees. The idea of the residency was to create a temporary community and an opportunity for being together without an established plan and pre-determined goal. The residency was thought of as an opportunity for “radical rest” and unintentional networking setting.
⚫️ Artist Residencies in a Time of Climate Crisis by Jaana Eskola (2022), Reside/Sustain
Video reminder: last year, in cooperation with the Association of Artistic Residencies of Russia (AiR of Russia), we invited Jaana Eskola, a cultural professional, environmentalist, and animal rights activist to share her expertise with the participants and talk about Artist Residencies in a Time of Climate Crisis.
In her talk, Jaana covered three pillars of sustainable ecological residency programme (sustainable practices, ecological residency programme, and collaborations: local community, national and international networks), opened up different aspects of sustainability (ecological, social, psychological, and cultural), and shared the areas of action for art residencies that include CO2 footprint, sustainable daily practices, slow traveling, continuous learning, re-connecting with the Nature, and empathy.

(2020), Res Artis
Humus Interdisciplinary.
Res Artis (2022)
Reside/Sustain

Even while the R/S team is on its summer break, we will keep sharing materials related to our core topics: art residencies and sustainability 🌿
This time, we prepared a selection of video recordings: talks, discussions, and symposium panels (to be published in two parts):
⚫️ New Models for Communing: Residency Programming and Strategies (2021), Rethinking Residencies
Residencies are increasingly looking outwards and developing new programming and structural models centered around community engagement, local embeddedness, ecology, and civic partnerships. How has the pandemic reoriented residencies towards the local communities? Can online residencies still be situated within their host communities? How have new digital realities impacted ideas of community?
⚫️ Artist Residency Debate (2021) at Verbier Art Summit, RESOURCE HUNGRY: OUR CULTURED LANDSCAPE AND ITS ECOLOGICAL IMPACT
The discussion, dedicated to artist residencies, ecology, and collaboration between art and science includes speeches by Ralph Dum, the instigator of STARTS – innovation at the nexus of Science Technology and the Arts, Kasia Molga, a multidisciplinary artist questioning the impact of technology on the natural environment and its role in our relation to and perception of ‘non-human makers’, and Danielle Siembieda, the creative director at Leonardo/The International Society for the Arts, Sciences, and Technology (Leonardo/ISAST), a non-profit global think tank exploring critical themes at the intersection of art, sciences, and technology.
⚫️ Culture of Mobility in the Time of Climate Change (2021) by On the Move, the cultural mobility information network
Cultural mobility is at the heart of practices of artist residencies. What happens to it in the time of climate crisis? What is the impact of the international exchange in culture on our planet’s climate? How does it influence today’s cities and how can we measure it? How can public institutions give a boost to sustainable mobility within their funding programmes?

(2021), Rethinking Residencies
Leonardo/The International Society for the Arts, Sciences, and Technology (Leonardo/ISAST),
