The Olympics are over but there are still lessons to be learned - in particular from a brave woman who is small in stature but a giant in sport, Simone Biles. Every spring, around Memorial Day, the poppies in front of our house bloom and 2020 is no different. Yesterday there were no flowers open and this morning a bunch of the poppies have bloomed. It made me think of the poem ‘In Flanders Fields’ written and first recited at the funeral of a WWI soldier by his friend and fellow soldier John McCrae. Full text of the poem is below.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
