To Mark the 1st anniversary of Rueben’s passing we would like to share with you part of Rueben’s memorial garden . We would like to thank everyone from the bottom of our hearts for their involvement in everything that contributed to making memories of our special boy so very , very special. He May no longer be here but he will always be so very near in everyone’s thoughts and hearts . Our whole family will forever carry a pain that’s will never go away . But you all in one way or another have helped us through everyday 💙🦖
Apologies for the lack of updates recently, it’s undoubtedly been a very challenging start of the year for us all. We would like to update everyone who has donated to Rooting for Rueben. With great thought on Stephen’s part he has endeavoured to create a Sanctuary area down at Sands park in Holmfirth , just over the bridge by the skate park next to Sands park itself.
It was always our aim to have his Sanctuary area in place ready for the anniversary of Rueben’s passing on the 30th May and everyone involved remains confident that they can still meet this date given the current situation with the pandemic.
The kids at NABB school have done some amazing drawings of how they’d like the totem pole to look and now alongside a money log, and some other beautiful hand carved treasures , the lady who is under taking all this has begun crafting the oak tree she’s sought, into a beautiful totem pole, amongst other nature inspired magical tidbits.
River Holme Connections have done a fantastic job at coordinating everyone’s efforts and are currently sourcing a giant log for our fallen ‘tree of good fortune’ which will take proud residence in the vicinity of the totem pole.
We’ll then hope to have a special online book written that will detail Rueben’s short but rich life that will include a digital treasure hunt . This will be a bright and colourful area , mainly created by the children who Rueben so very much loved from his school. A quiet secluded area that offers the chance for peaceful reflection. In and amongst nature and so very close to his birth home . 💙
When two people put their heads together some great things can be accomplished 😊.
We are delighted to let you know that £2,000 from the Rooting for Rueben pot has been donated to Candlelighters, to support the role of Tracy West who is an Outreach Play Specialist funded by the charity. Tracy works mainly with children suffering with anxiety facing treatment or procedures, and with patients and their siblings when a child is sadly palliative. The money will allow Tracy to carry out crafts and activities with children, that help them to manage their feelings, express themselves through play and to create memories for siblings and families to treasure forever.
💙 and our plans for the beautiful colourful, playful items down at Sands Park in holmfirth are underway 😬..... very lucky to know so many people that we can truly call our friends and family that have helped make these things happen 💕💕.... it’s also wonderful that the children from Nabb school are playing their part in creating this beautiful area in memory of Rueben. Somewhere his family and friends can remember him by 😊🤗. # # #
It seems the time is right to update everyone on our intentions with the money everyone so kindly donated to Rooting for Rueben. It’s with great sadness that the plans for the playground have been rejected. We’ve tried different means to see if we could over come any red tape but unfortunately to no avail . So we wanted to update everyone going forward on what our intentions now are. We are now in talks with River Holme Connections who are currently underway of forming a bug / Insect bog sanctuary at Sands Park in holmfirth. We have no doubt this is something Rueben would of loved. It’s so sad he isn’t here to enjoy this project he himself would of been so passionate about. We are also in talks with the owners of Cannon hall farm with the intention that we donate some of the money to their reptile sanctuary. With in return we’ve asked if they would then open their doors to Candlelighters to allow terminally ill children the opportunity to visit their amazing farm. Once again an animal love Rueben would of loved to be apart of and for sure helping others in the process. We’ve given these things great thought and didn’t want to rush into any decisions due to this being a tribute in Rueben’s name. So it’s very important we get it right. If anyone feels they have a suggestion more fitting please feel free to express your thoughts. Ultimately we hope everyone feels these are fitting tributes to such a special boy 💙🦋
It was a story told without words. Videos filled with hundreds of moments of love. We found beauty we never knew excited and we followed our gutt and used walking as our release to soften our grief. We felt like one big community came together to be the army that helped us through the tough days, the wet days the tough terrain, the climbs , the steep drops. Most of all on the 21st of August 2020 we dipped our feet in the see at Robin hoods bay knowing we did it, we walked 192 miles with an 8yr old and a 9yr old and experienced the most beautiful thing we will never forget. Thank you Coast to Coast. It was our pleasure 💕💙🦋💙🦖
Well here is our second to last Video. Today is our final destination , Robin hoods Bay. 16.2 miles today. To think the last time we was there was when Rueben ran on the beach with his best friend like 10yr olds should do😢. But We have no doubt he will be with us all in spirit as we are joined by many lovely friends and family. We’re sure it will be emotional and to know we have the 2 youngest boys to complete the 192 miles of the Coast to Coast is phenomenal. One last push to for these boys today to raise as much money for candlelighters their chosen charity. 💙🦋💙🦖...

So here is yesterday’s beautiful walk. Can’t believe we only have 3 days left to go. It seems the resilience these boys have is beyond anything anyone expected as we’ve met many people that have had to stop due to different injuries. We’ve had many tears and challenging moments but they are just both awesome. They are so so close to their target and would love to reach it by Friday. 💙🦋💙.

Well today has took our breath away. The views were amazing but more so today the boys have appreciated every moment of this walk from Inglby Cross to Chop gate 😊. They have £250 in their Candlelighters Jar so just £250 off their target which they would love to reach before getting to Robin hoods bay on Friday 😊💞🦖. We are just so so proud 🤗.

Never take anything for granted. Especially the simple things. Yesterday the boys got a well earned day off and it was so lovely just watching them play and swim. Donations have been flying in this morning and it’s unbelievable how many people are supporting and following their journey. 💙🦋💙.

Betty is Rueben’s little sister. She is just 3yrs old. All week she kept asking if she could do a walk to raise money for the Coast to Coast walk we are doing in memory of Rueben and to raise money for Candlelighters. She did 8 miles in 7hrs !! Watch at the end when she gets her medal . Rue would of been so so proud of her 💙💕. Please if anyone is willing to donate to the just giving link below to help show how proud we are of her for doing this as she’s too young to walk the Coast to Coast 😢 this is her contribution . We are so so proud of her 😊. And for sure baby Dinosaur would be super proud 🦋

Home School Psychology - Grief #hometogether #Rueben Today's lesson is on grief and has a special guest all the way from England! Google is a special friend of mine who lost someone very close to him recently. ...
It's becoming more and more real, the adventure and challenge Stephen, Liz, Otis, and Sidney are going to be taking on, on the 4th of August. 19 days of walking and in total completing 196 miles. The last 5 weeks have been extremely hard but somehow walking seems to just help ease the pain we as a whole family feel every day. Getting up out of bed is a daily challenge, so to walk 196 miles for sure will challenge us all in different ways, but we have no doubt Rueben will be rooting with everyone who takes part in helping us complete this challenge and helps us raise more money for Candlelighters. We have so many friends who need Candlelighters on a daily basis. Here is our Amazon wish list to help us complete our walk in the best way possible. PLEASE IF ANYONE FEELS THEY CAN SUPPORT US IN BUYING ANYTHING OFF THIS LIST AND HAVE IT DIRECTLY SENT TO US, WE WILL BE ETERNALLY GRATEFUL. Also please comment below or send a private message on rooting for Rueben to let us know what item you have supplied.
All our love to everyone who is still supporting our journey. CLICK ON THE LINK BELOW FOR DETAILS:

Team Rueben
10 year old Rueben's story began just under 1 year ago when he was diagnosed with a high graded cancerous brain tumour.
Unfortunately Rueben's fight with cancer is now almost over as his brain tumour has returned again and his condition is now terminal. We are trying to fulfill all of his final wishes and dreams in this extraordinary difficult time. This GoFundMe page is set up to raise the vital funds to build a playground in Rueben's honour in our home town.
Here is Rueben's story.
Rueben’s mum very sadly passed away from cancer nearly 3 years ago at the young age of 33. Following this tragic news, on the 30th May, 2019 doctors found a sizeable mass on the right-hand side of Rueben’s brain which was found to be a high graded cancerous tumour.
Rueben was taken for brain surgery and for the next 6 hours & 28 minutes he fought alongside the amazing surgeons to get through his surgery, including that of Dr. Siva Kumar who has a treasured relationship with Rueben.
On the 25th of July Rueben was meant to start Radiotherapy, however, instead, he went for a second brain surgery due to the tumour growing back within just 5 weeks. Following his surgery, Rueben would need to undergo 6 months of intense chemotherapy. Rueben completed his Radiotherapy and the 6 grueling months of chemotherapy like the warrior he is and on the 22nd of January he was given the news that he had no more cancer in his brain. As a family we were over joyed and could finally start to hope again.
On the 29th of April we received the devastating news that Rueben's tumour had once again returned and sadly there was nothing more that could be done by the doctors for our wonderful boy. Hearing this heartbreaking news was so difficult to come to terms with, but we have to be brave and strong just like Rueben is and make every moment count. As Rueben himself says he has to "live, live, live"
Now the thing about Rueben is, even though this was the most challenging time in his life, he is the most caring, loving, giving and inspirational young man that anyone would have the pleasure to meet. In Rueben’s own endeavours, from the very start of his journey, he raised money for Ward 52 at Leeds General Infirmary, which is a dedicated Paediatric Neurosciences Ward based on Clarendon Wing. Since then, Rueben has managed to raise a phenomenal total of £10,146 in his continued charity work for Candlelighters, and initially this GoFundMe page was set up to help Rueben raise money for different charities.
We would now like to use the money raised to build a playground in Rueben's memory, for the children on the street where he was born, 10 years ago on Christmas Day. This will give everyone in the community somewhere to come and remember this beautiful, adventurous, funny and mischievous young man.
Thank you to everyone who has helped us so far along Rueben's journey. and to everyone that gives a donation no matter how big or small we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
Thank you xx
