Oceana strongly condemns the alleged dumping of human waste by hundreds of vessels anchored at the waters off Union Banks or the Pagkakaisa Reefs, which form part of the Kalayaan Island Group within the West Philippine Sea. This poses a serious risk to the fisheries and rich biodiversity of our ocean on which the Philippines and its neighboring countries depend for food.

As a signatory to the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL) which safeguards against sewage and garbage pollution from ships, the Philippines should begin an investigation on this deplorable abuse of our territorial waters.

We call on the Philippine Coast Guard and the Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DA-BFAR) to verify this incident and those in other parts of the country together with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), local government units, and other agencies. The amended Fisheries Code imposes sanctions on vessels found guilty of aquatic pollution, while the Clean Water Act of 2004 prohibits unauthorized transport or dumping into sea waters of sewage sludge or solid waste.

Under the Clean Water Act of 2004, the DENR is mandated to convene the Management Board in coordination with National Water Resources Board (NWRB), and designate certain areas as water quality management areas using appropriate physiographic units such as watershed, river basins or water resources regions, such as this case in the West Philippine Sea. Is this being done in the entire country?

WHY EARTH DAY IS NOT A CELEBRATION

Today, the air is filled with promising rhetoric of love for the environment. Every year, we celebrate Earth Day as we would with Christmas, New Year, and every other holiday. But Earth Day is not a mere event, it is not a platform for shallow advocacies premised on self interest and promotion, nor is it a celebration.

What it must be is a cause for alarm. A cause for fear. A staunch reminder that on a daily basis, the world forests continue to be ravaged by unregulated deforestation, global temperatures at an all time high, and wildlife extinction rates soaring at unanticipated colossal rates.

In truth, there is nothing to celebrate amid the inaction of world governments in the face of this climate emergency. While global leaders deny the existence of a climate emergency, the global poor suffer the most. While economically advanced countries lavish in the excessive, unsustainable, and wasteful production means of their country, the deprived - who rely on the resources available in the outskirts - face the reality of the Earth's devastation - A reality chosen not to be seen by those who are in power.

Now more than ever, the youth are more vigilant and unblinded by this systemic travesty. Now more than ever, we see that the solution to the larger problem at hand, is not the individual effort but that of the collective. Now more than ever, we acknowledge that until the systematic lapse of world governments on environmental policies turn toward amelioration, we ought to expect the situation to only get worse.

A day is not enough to reverse the systemic problem we have designed for nature's demise. It is, however, a start. A call for action. A call for change. A spark for action of the many to love and care for the only planet we will ever have.

Let us rise together for our shared future.

Next stop: the ocean! 😢🌊🌍

4.5 trillion ci******es are tossed each year, making them the world's most littered item!

They are commonly spotted trashing streets, but they rarely stay there! When it rains, cigarette butts make their way into sewers and travel into our oceans, posing a serious threat to ecosystems and wildlife.

Filters are made of plastic fibers that NEVER fully break down and release toxic chemicals when they stay in nature!

When you quit smoking, you're not only doing your health a huge favor, you're also caring for the planet!

JUST ONE cigarette butt can pollute up to 8L of seawater and can cause the death of crustaceans and small fishes, among other damages to the ecosystem.

Plastic straws and stirrers will soon be banned in the Philippines? Great… well, not really.

After two decades of the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act (RA 9003)'s delayed implementation, the National Solid Waste Management Commission is banning straws and stirrers. These are just two of the top ten plastic polluters in the country, and this is not enough. Together with the Ecowaste Coalition, the Ormoc local government, Greenpeace Philippines, Interfacing Development Interventions for Sustainability - IDIS, the Philippine Earth Justice Center, Inc., and 39 other organizations, we call on the national government to ban all ten.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT PLASTIC STRAWS:

Plastic straws, like most food grade single-use plastics, are made of polypropylene. This material almost never disintegrates. Instead, over time, they break down into microscopic particles and eventually make their way to the unfortunate stomachs of marine animals and even our own.

Business-wise, utilizing plastics for production is affordable, hassle-free, and down right profitable. But do we truly know the cost it has for our environment? The answer is no.

Until we demand action from large corporations to switch from "profitable" to "sustainable", the narrative of individual responsibility (throwing trash in the right place) will keep on shying away our sights from the true roots of the problem - corporate greed and lack of accountability.

WHY JUNK TERROR LAW?

READ: Jacques Fallaria of Youth Strike for Climate Philippines on the Anti-Terror Law against environmental defenders and activists.

The youth sector is one of the powerful voices and actors in environmental protection as seen in our continued environmental and climate action over the years. But, the government's blatant red baiting and dehumanization of activists jeopardizes our efforts. YS4C PH strives to erase the misconceptions about being an activist. There is nothing wrong with being vocal and critical to the administration and various social issues. In fact, it only makes us better citizens. A true manifestation of being the pag-asa ng bayan.

The blatant red-tagging and dehumanization of activists by the Duterte Administration extend threats to environmental defenders, some of which are youth, who are in the frontline to fight for their lands and rights. In manifestation, 9 Panay Tumandoks were massacred by the state forces for protesting against an environmentally-destructive Jalaur Mega Dam Project that will result in losing their ancestral domain and its long-term impacts on the area. Attacks have been thrown against Windel Bolingat, an indigenous people leader from Cordillera, to the communities of the on-going reclamations in Taliptip, Bulacan, and Bacoor, Cavite, and displacements from Ancestral lands that belong to indigenous Dumagats and Remontados due to the Kaliwa Dam project all because of the effects of Anti-Terror Law.

Instead of red-tagging activists, focus on environmental issues and declare climate emergency!
