Microplastics Found in All Indian Salt and Sugar Brands: Study Reveals Concerning Findings

A recent study by Toxics Link found microplastics in every salt and sugar brand tested in India, regardless of size, packaging, or type.

Microplastics appeared in various forms, including fibers, pellets, films, and fragments, with sizes ranging from 0.1 mm to 5 mm.

Iodised salt contained the highest concentration of microplastics, with 89.15 pieces per kilogram, while organic rock salt had the lowest (6.70 pieces/kg).

Sugar samples also showed concerning levels, with non-organic sugar having the highest concentration of microplastics (68.25 pieces/kg).

Microplastics are a growing global health concern, found not only in food but also in human organs, including the lungs, heart, and even in breast milk.

The study highlights the urgent need for research and policy action to mitigate the exposure risks of microplastics and protect human health.
