As the Paris Olympics come to a close this week, we recognize the athletes who often face immense pressure to perform, which can significantly impact their mental health. Many former and current Olympians have openly discussed their mental health struggles, highlighting the importance of mental well-being alongside physical fitness. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) even released an athletes' mental health toolkit prior to the 2024 Summer Games for current and former Olympic athletes. While athletes spend a lot of time and energy maintaining their physical health, it is just as important for them to take care of their mental and emotional health.

From Olympians to student athletes, performance pressure impacts wellbeing. To learn more about the performance anxiety that many athletes face, read Counslr's Q&A with Dr. Jill Kapil, PsyD.

If you are feeling down when the temperatures heat up, you are not alone. While most people think of seasonal affective disorder (SAD)—a major depressive disorder that follows a seasonal pattern—as a condition that only affects people in winter, summer’s abundance of sunshine, longer days, outdoor adventures and vacation travel can also trigger a seasonal shift in mood and feelings of depression. If you are struggling while others seem to be enjoying endless BBQs and fun-filled activities, there are many effective strategies and treatments available to help you cope and thrive during the summer months and beyond.

If you suspect that you or someone you know is experiencing the Summertime Blues, seek advice from a mental health professional. Getting the correct diagnosis and a personalized treatment plan can make a significant difference in managing the symptoms and improving quality of life.

Be sure to work with your healthcare provider before beginning medication or a rigorous exercise regime.

Access to mental health care is a significant challenge in rural America. Millions of people live in areas with critical shortages of mental health professionals, including psychiatrists, psychiatric nurse practitioners, and psychologists.

Location shouldn't determine access to mental health care. Telehealth solutions like Counslr are one way we can help reduce challenges to accessing mental health support. Let’s keep working to ensure everyone gets the care they need.

Today, we celebrate Juneteenth, a day commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States. It's a day of reflection and joy, and we hope you take the time to celebrate in a way that is meaningful to you.

While we celebrate freedom, we acknowledge the ongoing fight for racial equity, including in mental health care. Among adults who report fair or poor mental health, White adults (50%) are more likely to say they received mental health services in the past three years compared with Black adults (39%). Black adults disproportionately report challenges with finding a provider who can understand their background and experiences.

Together, we can improve the state of mental health care in the Black community. To learn more about how we can create an environment of inclusion for Black Americans seeking support, read our piece by counselor Diamond Thaxton, LMHC, “Creating a Community of Black Mental Health."

It's Pride Month: a time to celebrate love, diversity, and the LGBTQ+ community! However, while we celebrate the progress made so far, we recognize the work that still needs to be done. According to Mental Health America, LGBTQ+ teens are six times more likely to experience symptoms of depression than non-LGBTQ+ identifying teens, and LGBTQ+ youth are over four times as likely to attempt su***de compared to heterosexual youth.

Our blog written by Counslr’s Jessica Wolsiefer, LCSW explores the history of pride month, LGBTQ+ mental health, and what we can do to work towards an inclusive society for all.
