Dried fish has historically played a significant role in Goa's economy, particularly in the fishery sector. Here's how it used to help the economy earlier:

1. Export: Dried fish from Goa was highly sought after and had a strong demand in domestic as well as international markets. The export of dried fish contributed to foreign exchange earnings and helped boost the local economy.

2. Employment: The process of drying fish provided employment opportunities to a significant number of people, especially women and fisherfolk. They would engage in activities such as cleaning, salting, and drying fish, thereby generating income and supporting their households.

3. Trade networks: The production and trade of dried fish in Goa fostered a network of traders, exporters, and wholesalers. This created a market ecosystem, supporting livelihoods and promoting trade within the region and beyond.

4. Livelihood diversification: Drying fish was not limited to professional fisherfolk alone. Many families would engage in small-scale drying activities to supplement their income during the fishing offseason. It served as an alternative livelihood and helped in diversifying sources of revenue.

5. Tourism: Dried fish, being a local specialty, attracted tourists who were interested in experiencing Goan culture and cuisine. Visitors would purchase dried fish to take back home as souvenirs, contributing to the local economy through tourism-related businesses.

Overall, the dried fish industry in Goa played a vital role in generating income, providing employment, and contributing to trade and tourism. However, it's worth noting that economic dynamics may have changed over time, and the significance of dried fish in the Goan economy may have evolved as well.
