Hello chook lovers!
Iv been quiet on here lately not much happening! Just looking after the young birds waiting for them to grow into something beautiful β€οΈ

π₯π₯π₯COLLECTING EGGS FOR INCUBATION OR BROODY HEN π₯ π₯π₯
Clean fresh nest boxes = clean eggs. I use wood shavings in my nest boxes. Clean eggs are very important! Dirty eggs can carry bad bacteria which can harm the embryo.
Washing dirty eggs can harm the protective layer around the egg. So the best way to prevent this is to avoid dirty eggs in the first place.
π₯Collecting eggs with care and storing the eggs the right way
π₯Store eggs pointy end down in the egg carton
π₯Store eggs in a cool place where the temperature doesnβt fluctuate to much
π₯Collect fresh eggs & store for max 14 days before incubating or setting under a broody hen. I mark eggs from different pens with a pencil.
π₯Give the birds top quality food & fresh water daily. The egg carries all the nutrients needed for a healthy chicken to develop.

Bit nosey and noisey sometimes!
Not laying yet but hoping to get some eggs in coming weeks as the days warm up! π₯π₯π£π£
π₯ π₯π₯First lot of eggs into the new βSmart Incubatorβ could be dangerous if they all hatch!
This machine is manual turn but as you can see very easy!
Testing my fertility for the season I will candle these eggs in 7 days then again at lockdown. Eggs will be loaded into the machine every Friday from now on. Collecting the eggs from pens daily & storing pointy end down. So that the oldest eggs incubated are 7 days old. Eggs stored for longer periods of time decrease the hatch-ability rates.

Afternoons with the girls πππ
Itβs not all about the girls here! This 2020 bred c**k is still looking lovely. He has some beautiful offspring on the ground from 2021 season and Iβm planning on using him again this year. πππβ€οΈβ€οΈ
What I like about him?
- Good nature
- Good thigh lacing
- Open lacing all over
- Big and wide bird
- Good round shape
Every few months I lay mulch hay down in the pens for the chooks! Gives them something to scratch around in and also somewhere for the bugs to hide! They love it πππππΎ

ππ³π₯π₯Farm Fresh Eggs π₯ π₯π³π
My friend got this for me for Christmas this year! How good haha
ππ₯πRecord keeping π π₯π
This season I did a few things to keep track of my Silver Laced Wyandotte breeding program
1. Tagged all the adult birds with leg bands. Both numbered bands and coloured bands. Coloured bands make it easy to identify who is who. Also each year I pick a new year colour for the babies this way I know how old the birds are by leg band colour.
2. Went through the hens and roosters and paired 3 hens with 1 rooster best suited to one another. Took notes of which birds have been mated together.
3. Marked all eggs from different pens when collected. Pen A,B,C
4. Candled egg at day 10 of incubation and recorded fertility. Removing infertile eggs. Candling eggs again at night 18 before lockdown.
5. Once eggs are placed into lock down the basket is divided into 4 sections so chicks can be identified what group they belong to.
6. Once hatched the chicks are toe punched before being put in brooder box. Then I know who is the parent group.
- Greatlander Incubator
- Coloured zip ties
- Toe punch from - Pinnon Hatch Farms
- Metal Numbered leg bands - Pinnon Hatch Farms
- Kewpie Chick Starter
I have lots of pullets and c**kerels growing out at the moment and hoping this system will make big improvements on next year. ππ
