There have been some positives to come out of lockdown. Welfare rates have been raised in some countries, others have given out universal basic income. People are growing food and baking sourdough, and we're all wondering why attending meetings in person seemed preferable to chatting online in our pyjamas. Celebrities are clammering for attention as we ignore them in favour of our new heroes: health workers, cleaners, delivery drivers and teachers.

As lockdown is relaxed in many countries, there's talk of going back to normal. But what was really normal about the old way? Do we want to sit in rush hour traffic on our daily commute again? Do we need the skies to be crowded with aircraft? Does industry have to ramp up to the unsustainable levels it was operating at? Does GDP have to stay as the one and only measure of success?

Think outside the bulk bins! Because there are so many ways to shop for food more sustainably that have absolutely NOTHING to do with packaging. ⁠⠀

1. The first thing you should do is load up on fruit and veg! ⁠⠀
⁠⠀
Have a goal of making 80% of your plate produce. Animal products are a huge source of greenhouse gas emissions. ⁠⠀
⁠⠀
If you're not a plant-based eater, make a goal of trying out a few new dishes. If you need some inspo, let me know in the comments. I can link to a few of my go-to recipes in stories! ⁠⠀

2. Avoid overly processed and overly packaged snacks. ⁠⠀
⁠⠀
Many popular snacks like Oreos and ritz crackers contain palm oil from unsustainably managed farms that are responsible for the destruction of much of rainforest eco-system.⁠⠀

3. Don't buy any single-use items. ⁠⠀
⁠⠀
Instead, of buying a single-serving container of yogurt, buy a BIG container of yogurt and decant it into reusable single-serving containers at home - as a bonus this will also save you money! ⁠⠀
