Fun with Maths at home

I'm a NZ Primary Math teacher. My mission is to stretch the math brains of young and old alike!

31/08/2021

Today we've got a game to share with you. It is based on memory and perfect for those practicing pairs to make 10. It can be modified so have some fun with the rules once you get to know the game. Happy Mathsing everyone!

Mr 5 got out some of his Dad's teddies. These teddies are over 40 years old!

How many teddies do you have at your house? Maybe you could set them up together and do some maths with them. How many eyes, ears, noses do they have altogether? How many arms and legs? Have fun and send up through your pictures!

I bet there's a lot of people playing board games at the moment!

Who has played Monopoly? This is one of the classics, has lots of maths involved, and who can resist the excitement of buying properties and bankrupting other players! Monopoly Junior is a great first game for younger players and teaches them the same concepts in a simpler version. Today Mr 5 beat us and was very proud of himself!

Vitamin C kicks today!

Our lovely neighbour was giving away free oranges yesterday! So kind!

I have an open question today.... this means there's no 'actual' answer, so use your number sense and estimation skills to think about a close possible guess. Good mathematicians can justify (give reasons for) their answer.

23/08/2021

Shapes are a great link to learning maths at home. Today's challenge is about rectangles. Have a chat about what makes something a rectangle. Send us your creations!

Older kids might like to find out how to work out the area of a rectangular shape, maybe how many m² their bedroom is.

Who's schools were selling chocolates? It's dangerous to leave chocolate bars in our house.... I think we're going to have a hefty bill by the end of lockdown!

Who has been getting into some baking? My Mr 5 looked through our cookbook and decided on duo cow cupcakes...and no cupcake is complete without decorating of course!

19/08/2021

I noticed it was rubbish day when I was out walking so here's a visual maths challenge for today....

Take a picture and share with some friends, ask them How many wheels can you see?

19/08/2021

It's nice to have a bit more time to go walking. We enjoyed listening to a young tui high in a tree. He looked like he had cotton balls on his chest!

How many birds can you spot next time you go for a walk?

18/08/2021

Kia ora! Looks like we're back up and running for another edition of !

The kids are happily juicing tangelos at our house today. What maths is happening at your house today?

A big shout out to all us teachers heading back into it (and those who were back at Level 3). I wish you all the best for the rest of Term 2 and beyond! Well done to all you parents and kiddos out there for making it through Lock down, best of luck at school and work!

Wow, last day in Level 3 today. Well done everyone. I've started cleaning up around the house, and noticed the kids had left out scooters, bikes, skates and a skateboard. Got me wondering how many wheels are at your place? The challenge will be to use a tally chart and graph to show your findings.

12/05/2020

Since it's my birthday I wondered how old I am in minutes and seconds! You can check your age at http://www.mathcats.com/explore/age/calculator.html.

10/05/2020

Today's challenge focuses on angles. You will learn the names and properties of different angles, then find them in your name. You will practice some addition and multiplication to work out the total value of your name based on angles. Have a go!

No maths task today, enjoy a lovely day with your Mums!

I got an email from San Diego Sea World today with a feature on Whales. It got me thinking about whether a whale would fit inside my house! I wonder which species of whale would fit in your house? If you have chalk you can draw their real length outside on concrete too! Go to San Diego Sea World page here to learn more about these majestic animals. https://seaworld.com/educational-resources/whales/?utm_source=Cheetah&utm_medium=Email&utm_campaign=SWC_EducationalResources_W5.Whales_0508020&tp=i-1NHD-I1-13m-62wn3-1o-2fy8k-1c-B1v-62A8m-l4af8imZFq-5n5dJ&pk_id=

Who else has been enjoying a bit of online shopping. Our Miss 10 is busy collecting and reading the entire Harry Potter set, and is also hunting for the series on DVD too!

06/05/2020

An engaging game for today called Save Twenty, demonstrated in a less than 1 minute!

Best suited to children up to Year 4, it is a fun way to sneak in a bit of practice with addition to 20. It is still suitable for older children to build fluency and speed with addition facts as well as estimation skills. This one came from Maths for Love (Dan Finkel's site).

3-D shapes and buildings are a cool way to build spatial awareness. How many blocks in my building?

If you have blocks, lego etc you can make your own building and take photos of it from different perspectives, and maybe even try drawing it. If you like drawing 3D shapes and have a printer, google 'Isometric dot paper' which will help you draw accurate dimensions.

A good ol' problem-solving task for today!

Photos from Fun with Maths at home's post 04/05/2020

Our 10 year old is really into reading Harry Potter at the moment, and has been buying some online with a mission to read the entire collection. Some of the books are so long, they inspired me to write today's maths task, a chapter book quiz!

03/05/2020

The more you look, the more you see! Put on your maths eyes and find some tesselating patterns around your house.

01/05/2020

Prime numbers are special numbers....why is that? How many can you find around your house today?

01/05/2020

We've been doing crafts today and you know me.... have to put a maths spin on everything! If you don't have PVA glue, glue stick should work fine.

29/04/2020

An avid fan sent this, and I just had to share it for all you pet lovers out there. Even dogs are getting in on the maths action!

28/04/2020

Flexible fun with fractions today. Estimation is a maths skill often used around the home and in every day life. Have you got any fruit trees at your house?

28/04/2020

I was out delivering groceries today, and I saw first hand how excited people are to get their takeaway fix. How long would you be willing to wait in line for your favourite meal?

26/04/2020

We found a box of countdown dominoes, so thought it might be a nice day for some visual maths. Maybe you could find something in your house to make a pattern with.

25/04/2020

It's been beautiful weather for family activities. I bet lots of you have been walking, scooting or biking around your neighbourhood.
Today's question is open, that means there are many possible answers. You could get your family to time your walks and make up your own question.

25/04/2020

I've taken a break from posting a maths problem today, enjoying a nice quiet and reflective ANZAC day as a family. Tune in tomorrow!

23/04/2020

To celebrate our milestone of over 500 followers, let's get creative with maths! Can't wait to see what you come up with!
We made it by writing the number on paper and Mr 4 built over the writing using blocks.

23/04/2020

Thanks so much to all of you! I've been enjoying creating lots of tasks to show how we can use maths at home. It's even better to see children (and adults) everywhere being inspired to give tasks a go and grow their maths brains!

Photos from Fun with Maths at home's post 22/04/2020

Solve some problems that one of my very clever mathematicians created. Thanks J for the inspiration! Head's up, the answer to the second one is a negative number!
Here's hoping others will get on board and send us in what you have been up to out there!

20/04/2020

Visual representations help build a strong understanding of multiplication. Things at home like games, blocks and cards lend themselves well to building arrays and helping to make links to multiplication.

Monday is a good day for a new maths game! Don't break the Bank is based on games from Dan Finkel. All you need is a pack of cards, pen and paper.

18/04/2020

We've had lots of people sending in clues as to who is living in their bubble. Today's task is to figure out clues that one of my star students sent in. Happy Sunday everyone!

Here's an 'active' activity with some strategy involved.

Juliet Robertson, CF on Twitter “It's a street maze! To play.. 1. Start on the 1 in the bottom centre square 2. Then, jump 1 space in any direction (F,B,L,R) but NOT diagonal. 3. You can jump in any direction the number of squares indicated by the square you’re standing on. 4. Your aim is to reach the heart.”
