It's A Soul to Keep's first birthday!

A year ago on the 16th of June (2022), A Soul to Keep was published.

I had so much anxiety over it. I had decided that if it didn't do well, I was going to fold and stop publishing. I couldn't afford it, and nothing I was doing was to get my author career off the ground was working. I was working full-time, and finically struggling to live and publish at the same time.

However, this book marks a massive change in my life.

I'm now working full-time in a career I adore. I have published 4 books in the last year, with the 5th in just 4 days! I have an amazing fanbase that are wonderful and supportive. I have made friends, and now can obsess over writing stories that people really love reading.

I cannot express my gratitude to every single person who has read my books, reviewed them, shared my art, and support me in general. You are the reason I get out of bed every day and write.
You are the reason I am finally happy doing my job. You are the reason I smile every day.

I will never forget what this book has done for me, how it has changed my life, and it makes me cry happy tears as I write this.

I'm excited to see and meet everyone while we all wear fancy gowns. Who will I see there?

I'm sorry that I sometimes share sad or frustrating stuff to you. I wish I didn't have to ❤ (I have a lot of followers in here, both readers and other authors)

It's not often I post things that upset me, but I think I have a pretty good reason to be upset.

It's okay to gain inspiration from an author, but please, don't copy them. I'm seeing it a lot, and many authors have to deal with it as well - especially in the monster and sci-fi genres. However, I do feel like I need to take a stance before this gets worse for me in particular.

Do I own skull-headed monsters? NO. That is a fact. No, I do not.

Do I own my Duskwalkers and their unique, never before seen combination, identities? YES. Yes, I do.

If you're creating a story with a skull-headed monster, are their eyes different coloured glowing orbs that change based on emotions, with a skull head, and non-traditional variations of horn combinations? If you have all of these, you've 100% copied my monster's face, and a lot about what makes their species unique.
I'm seeing a lot of authors removing their ribcages and thinking that's enough, but that trait isn't actually unique to me.

This isn't to say I don't want more skull-headed monster books. I absolutely do. But, there are so many ways to go about it that isn't theft. There is already a staple, use it.

Please don't take all the hard work I've done, just to steal it and make a buck and ride a trend-train. It's not fair to me.

So, what makes my characters wholly unique and never before seen?

Their traits paired with each other.

Unique to my Duskwalkers:

Personality:
-They gain intelligence/humanity by eating intelligent beings/humans
-They eat a soul to bond with their partner

Physically:
-Their bodies become what creatures they eat(including the first skull they've eaten)
-Their orbs changing colours (spoiler: Their base orb colour is also the colour of their souls, and their magic)
-Their different variations of horns with their skulls
(This is widely uncommon as most generally stick to one skull-head at a time in their art form(movies, anime, art, ect))

These, paired with other skull-headed monster traits that are widely used:

Personality:
-Eating humans
-Insatiable hunger
-Use magic

Physically:
-Bones on the outside of their body
-Hollow due to hunger
-Orbs that are 1 solid colour, and are usually white for "hollow" or red for "evil/bloodlust"
-Usually a wolf head with twisty horns
-Deer/wolf head with antlers
(Noting that I have never seen anything beyond those skulls, and I'd love to see more, but there's a line between copying my monsters species overall as well. I'm making all the Duskwalkers different for a reason, as I've *never* seen that before. If this happens in someone else's series(or in a why-choose), it worries me that it pops into "their bodies become what creatures they eat" that I stated above.)

However, all of those things combined, is what make them unique. That's what makes them different, and copying what I have made isn't inspiration, it's copying. I am the first, and the only one to have those collective traits in skull-headed monsters, not just in books, but also in anime, in art.

I am not the staple. I am not the stamp.
I don't mind starting a genre or trend, but I don't want my Duskwalkers to be copied when I worked hard to not copy anyone else. When I went out of my way to make them different - from their skulled faces, their colour changing glowing orbs, to their different horns, to their bodies, their personalities.

You can say "but there are thousands of vampire books!" Yes, there are, but there aren't for Duskwalkers. Only I have Duskwalkers, only I have those unique traits paired with their skull-heads and different horns. You can't compare vampires to Duskwalkers, because it's not the same.

People are also copying my covers. Please stop. My artist worked hard on them, and the fact people want to copy them is unfair to her.

Make. Your. Own. Characters. Make your own book. Make your own story. It's not hard to come up with an idea.

Also, please take into consideration of how damaging blatant copying is to your career and your branding. I CANNOT control how readers will come at you, no matter what I do or say. I don't condone bullying, but I also don't condone AI and pirating and people still do that.

READERS: Please don't attack another author for having a skull-headed monster. Not everyone is copying, not everyone is trying to.

If you're unsure, message me or my PA Siobhan Royle, as I've already had conversations with a *few* authors who are writing or have written skull-headed monster books. I'm so excited for them to come out because I already know that these authors aren't copying me. They made their own story, their own characters, and I want them to do well.

I have faced my books being pirated numerous times. It's been illegally translated into Spanish, it's been pushed around in discord chats.

I DO NOT publish my ebooks anywhere but amazon.

I don't really care for the loss of income that comes from piracy. If someone wants to steal, knowing it's theft, they will, and nothing I do or say will stop them. Especially because many people feel *entitled* to have them for free.

But the real issue is that we can have our publishing rights revoked.

Imagine reading a book, loving it, and then discovering you can't get anymore in the series, or anything by that author ever again. Whether you pirated it, or bought it legally. Imagine realising that this is all due to selfish people's actions because they wanted something for free. KU is a mostly affordable reading service that gives you plenty of bang for your buck. It's $10 a month, which is less than your streaming sites. It's about the cost of 2 coffees. Say you read 3 books in 1 month. Those books would have cost around $4-$6 dollars. You've already made back your money. A book takes you hours to read, so really you're only paying a few cents for hours of entertainment.

Did you know you can now get many Amazon books in your library? A Soul to Keep is in a few libraries in the US, and if you ask them to get it in, they might. All you need to do is ask.

I want my books to be accessible to all, no matter their income, no matter their situation. I want to have it made into an audiobook for those who have trouble reading, no matter the reason why.

I want to eventually have them translated so they are available worldwide.

Yet, none of this will happen if my publishing rights are removed, as are my books from Amazon.

You loved A Soul to Keep and want to read A Soul to (whatever)? Guess what? You can't! Because piracy had it removed, and there really isn't any other platform for me to publish.

This isn't an author only problem. This is a reader problem too, because this will affect your ability to read. It may not be your fault, but you will be the unfortunate person who has to deal with unfinished series. You will lose your entertainment, your reading, your books, because of piracy.

So what can you do? If you see a pirating site, submit a request to google to have it removed from google's search engine. If your favourite authors are on there, let us know about it. Send zon an email about how revoking authors publishing rights due to the action of pirates is unfair - get in their face, let them know you're angry, because the more people that do it, the more likely they'll listen.

Must I really go on?

I am from Australia. My English is NOT the same as the USA. It is actually very similar to the UK.

I get negative reviews about these words often. I have people messaging me to fix or change them. I have people telling other readers I don't know how to spell these words. I've even had people laugh and mock me over them, in really cruel ways, that I just ignore.

Don't get me wrong, in the first publication of A Soul to Keep I had a few issues. But they have been fixed a long time ago. And mistakes in any of my books that I am unaware of, they happen. I am human, my betas are human, my editor is human.

I want people to come to me and tell me there are issues; spelling mistakes and grammar. I would prefer that over people flagging them to Amazon and possibly getting my books taken down. But please, if the word is repeated, such as SMELT, google it up because it's most likely NOT a spelling mistake. Hell, it's actually in USA English but is just so uncommonly used.

No, I will not be transferring my books over to USA spelling. I'm Australian, I want to write in my mother tongue. They are my books, and people from all around the world read them. Germany, Taiwan, Japan, UK, France. I want to be true to me, and my country, and asking me to change to a different country's spelling is so damn self-centred and rude. The audacity.
