This October, the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), through its Subcommission on Cultural Communities and Traditional Arts (SCCTA), is celebrating the National Indigenous Peoples (IP) Month pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 1906 signed in 2009 wherein the constitution mandates the “recognition and protection of the rights of Indigenous Cultural Communities/ Indigenous Peoples (ICCs/IPs).” Various agencies namely the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP), Office of the Muslim Affairs (OMA), Commission on Higher Education-Philippines (CHED), and the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) are among the agencies celebrating the annual celebration.

The theme of this year’s Dayaw, “Katutubong Filipino: Atin ang Tagumpay!” highlights the ways in which Philippine Indigenous Peoples firmly manifest their optimistic views and practices or their “strategies of prevailing” in the midst of adversities.

"The priest is not a priest for himself- he is for you. After GOD, the priest is everything!" - St. John Mary Vianney

As we remember this special celebration for all priests, may we offer them a prayer that they may serve as a bridge, instead of walls. May they also imitate the Good Shepherd for us to be guided in every step of the way. May this day remind them of their calling as shepherd of all souls.

St. John Mary Vianney, pray for all priests!

8 GREAT SCIENTISTS WHO WERE CATHOLICS

Today, we celebrate the birthday of the first person to lay the mathematical of the science of generics, none other than Gregor Mendel. But did you know that aside from his profession as a scientist, he was also an Augustinian Prelate? Who would have thought that science and faith are compatible?

It’s a common myth that science and faith contradict each other. Today, we presnt to you 8 Great Scientists who were Catholics. Not only have they upheld the teachings of the Church, but they have also made incredible contributions to the world.

*Note: This is just a shorlist of the Great Scientists who were Catholics, there are many others!

1. Fr. Stanley Jaki
Stanley L. Jaki was a Hungarian-born Benedictine priest who wrote extensively on the relationship between science and faith. Born in Gyor, Hungary in 1924, he became a priest in 1948, and received his doctorate degree in theology from the Pontifical Institute of St. Anselm in Rome two years later.
Among his more notable works were The Relevance of Physics in 1966 and Science and Creation in 1974. In both works, Jaki “argued that the scientific enterprise did not become viable and self-sustaining until its incarnation in Christian medieval Europe, and that the advancement of science was indebted to the Christian understanding of creation,” according to the Times. In a 1967 article in the Journal of Science and Religion, Jaki advanced his argument even further, stating that “faith, or belief, forms the ultimate foundation of the certainty of every knowledge.”

2. Gregor Mendel
"Gregor Mendel, known as the "father of modern genetics," was born in Austria in 1822. A monk, Mendel discovered the basic principles of heredity through experiments in his monastery's garden."

3. Fr. Giuseppe Mercalli
Priest, volcanologist, and director of the Vesuvius Observatory who is best remembered today for his Mercalli scale for measuring earthquakes which is still in use. Yes, the scientific inquiry of Catholics knows no bounds, even volcanoes and earthquakes have been studied.

4. Fr. Georges Lemaitre
A Belgian Catholic Priest, astronomer and professor of physics at the Catholic University of Leuven. Known as the father of the Big Bang Theory

5. Nicolaus Copernicus
Born in 1473 in present-day Thorn, Poland, Nicolaus Copernicus was headed for a career in medicine and law when he discovered his passion for astronomy. He came from a devout Catholic family. Two brothers become clerics, one sister entered the Cistercian order, and the family was in the Third Order of St. Dominic, according to the Catholic Encyclopedia.

He would go on to become one of the great figures of the Scientific Revolution, remembered for challenging the traditional geocentric model of the universe in which the earth was at the center. Instead, Copernicus proposed a sun-centered, or heliocentric, model. His ideas were presented in his book, On the Revolutions of the Heavenly Spheres, published in 1543, the year that he died.

Despite his interest in astronomy, he eventually obtained doctorates in both medicine and law. He earned a living as a Church canon, managing the properties and finances.

6. Blaise Pascal
A French mathematician, physicist, inventor, writer and Catholic theologian. Best known as the inventor of the first calculator, contributing Pascal's triangle and probability theory.

7. Roger Boscovich
A physicist, astronomer, mathematician, philosopher, diplomat, poet, theologian, and Jesuit priest who made many contributions to astronomy.

8. St. Albert the Great
Known for discovering arsenic, in addition to being a Doctor of the Catholic Church and a Saint.

POSTER MAKING CONTEST

By: Hebruth Pacaco
Grade 9-STE

"Negativity sorrounds but my dream is bigger"

Description: A child, with a straight clear path in her mind. Negativity surrounds, obstacles interfere, and shortcomings were ahead of her, but she never gave up. Those were her inspirations to move forward with all the learnings imprinted in her mind. She was never a dreamer, but the pandemic thought her that; life is precious, do not waste it for nothing. You can dream small, but you can also dream bigger. Even the strongest catastrophe can never defeat a person with knowledge and perseverance. As it rises together with its dreams how long or hard it takes doesn’t really matter for someone who has hope, you can defeat all these odds the world has brought.
