Congratulations to community leader Jered Pigeon. On Wednesday, June 29, the Moorhead Human Rights Commission presented him with the inaugural Destiny Holiday Community Champion Award.
Jered is Director of the Office of Diversity and Inclusion and serves as the Campus Diversity Officer for Minnesota State University Moorhead, where he leads a team that provides programming and services to students through the American Indian Center, the Intercultural Center, the Rainbow Dragon Center and the Women’s Center.
Moorhead City Council and Human Rights Commission Member Deb White said:
“Jered started working professionally in DEI work in higher education nearly 15 years ago. I’m proud to say that I knew him even before then, when he was an undergraduate at MSUM, and who, as a student leader, founded and served as president of Umoja, our African American Student Association.
“In fact, I met Destiny Holiday through Jered, since his contributions have spanned both college campuses and our community. He worked closely with Ms. Holiday through her community work with her nonprofit organizations and when she started the first Juneteenth celebrations in Moorhead. It is only fitting that he receives the inaugural award in her honor.”
Jered is also leading efforts to close achievement gaps in education. He provides inspiration through his own non-traditional educational path – from dropping out of school after 9th grade, returning to earn his GED and multiple college degrees, and now working on a doctorate in education.
Jered cares deeply about helping others and models the philosophy of servant leadership. He strives to bring people together to work collaboratively and to build capacity in others. Congratulations, Jered!
About the award:
Destiny Holiday organized the first community celebration of Juneteenth in Moorhead in 2019. In 2020, the Moorhead City Council passed a resolution on the recommendation of the Moorhead Human Rights Commission to designate June 19 as Juneteenth Independence Day in Moorhead.
In addition to leading efforts to have Juneteenth commemorated in Moorhead, Ms. Holiday was the founder of “The Birthing of a Diamond” and “Diamond Kids” nonprofits, which empower and support single mothers and children from disadvantaged and underrepresented communities. Ms. Holiday passed away in 2022, and the Moorhead Human Rights Commission established this award in 2023 to be given annually to a Moorhead resident whose contributions to the community exemplify the compassion, resilience, and commitment to lifting up others exhibited by Ms. Holiday.

I first learned about Florence Klingensmith when we moved to Moorhead over twenty years ago. I was so pleased when we unveiled a beautiful mural in her honor three years ago and then renamed our airport after her. Thank you Marisa Bengtson-Loerzel for your work to make sure that this inspirational Moorhead woman gained the recognition she deserved!
In 2019, the mayors of Moorhead and Fargo officially proclaimed that October 28 was Florence Klingensmith Day, honoring the pioneering aviator and Moorhead resident who help blaze the trail for female pilots everywhere.
To recognize her achievements, the Moorhead airport was renamed Moorhead Municipal Airport – Florence Klingensmith Field. If you visit the airport, take a few minutes to read the display that celebrates her life.
