Physical therapy can help manage your pain. Here are four ways on how physical therapists can manage pain:
• Exercise: Studies have shown that those who exercise on a regular basis, experience less pain. Physical therapists can prescribe exercises specific to your needs.
• Manual Therapy: Physical therapists can use dry needling, joint and soft tissue mobilization, and manipulation to provide a hands-on approach to treating pain.
• Education: Understanding pain science, muscle and tissue anatomy, and physiology can help you understand the importance of the prescribed exercises and treatments.
• Teamwork: Working collaboratively with your physical therapist can have a major impact on your recovery process. Physical therapists who are directly working with you can assess how your body is responding to treatment.
Falling occurs because the body’s balance has been disrupted through the person’s sensory and/or motor systems. A person’s body can maintain balance because the brain receives and interprets information from several different types of senses:
• Vision (from the eyes) helps orient you to your environment.
• Proprioception or joint position sense (from your joints and muscles, telling your brain where your body is in space).
• The vestibular system (from the inner ear) senses motion, equilibrium, and head position.
Based on these inputs, the brain sends information to different muscles of the body to help maintain balance. Contact the FYZICAL nearest you to get a fall risk screening today!

Fall-proof your home to greatly decrease your risk of falling:
• Make sure you have clear walkways, rid of clutter, throughout your home.
• Use double-sided tape or non-slip backing on your throw rugs to ensure they will not slip as you walk on them.
• Make sure you have adequate lighting throughout your home so you can fully see while moving around in the day and night.
• Fix loose or broken handrails. Make sure you have handrails on both sides of the stairs.
Utilize these above tips to help protect yourselves or your loved ones from falling in your home!
How can you tell if your balance needs improvement?
Follow this simple test below to see if you may need balance training:
• Stand barefoot next to a counter, sink, or chair with your hand gently grasping the counter surface.
• Put one foot directly in front of the other, so that one heel touches the opposite toes.
• Gently lift your hand up but keep it close to the counter in case you need to grab it quickly. Try to do this for 10 seconds.
• Now try it with your eyes closed.

“My Neurologist recommended FYZICAL because of their reputation of excellence with balance therapy. I've been experiencing vestibular dysfunction specifically related to 3 falls within the past 12 months.
The safety harness helped instill confidence in myself and my abilities. As the exercises moved from static (flat-footed) balance to dynamic balance environments, there was then no surface that I couldn't conquer!”

August is National Wellness Month!
Prioritize your self-care, manage your stress better, and try new healthy routines. Create wholesome habits in your lifestyle and focus on self-care to feel like your best self!
Are you familiar with how your vestibular system works?
The vestibular system is a main contributor to your physical balance. Located in the inner ear, the system senses motion when small hairs, called cilia, are moved by microscopic calcium crystals. When we sit, stand, move, or experience motions (such as in a car) the crystals move the hairs. The brain receives signals from the hairs, along with information from the eyes and your sense of touch, to interpret motion, equilibrium, and orientation in space.
A weakened vestibular system can make you dizzy, which is a danger to your balance. To learn more about the vestibular system, explore the balance section of our websites!
