Mandy Monk Jewellery

Handcrafted sterling silver jewellery with a boho western flavour

Photos from Mandy Monk Jewellery's post 29/07/2024

I am taking a break for a couple of months to focus on learning new skills in smithing, to help get to where I want to be with the product that I put into the world.
My goal has always been to have the skill set where I am creating high end statement pieces with beautiful high quality gemstones.

With the slog of social media I haven’t had the time to focus on my craft.

I will still be present on here occasionally with updates and to show you what I’m working on, as well as to any questions, so please reach out 🧡

I’m sure many of you can relate to the burnout associated with the constant drive to be present on social media and the toll that takes on you mentally, so while I’m in creative flow mode, I won’t be pushing myself to stick to any routine on Instagram.

Thank you for being here.
Thank you for supporting me and my business/ passion project.
It really does the mean the world 🙏🏼🧡

In the meantime, the website will remain open, and the 50% off sale is still on.

🔸 Silver staples 🔸

Sometimes all you need is some simple sterling silver earrings, and these ones are perfect for any occasion 👌🏼

Both of these designs were created using handmade Navajo stamps from New Mexico, giving an embossed feature.

🔹 TURQUOISE TUESDAY 🔹

One of my fave pieces (and certainly my favourite cuff I’ve made 😍) is this Hubei cuff.

A true statement piece, it features this epic Hubei turquoise stone. Set amongst hand stamped designs on a split shank cuff band.

Hubei turquoise is found in the Hubei Province of China. It comes in a range of beautiful colours from yellows and browns, through to greens and brilliant blues.

Hubei is one of my favourite turquoises to work with because of the many colours and sizes you can get.

Australian pipe opal ✨

Pipe opal is probably my fave opal type… I just love the vivid colours you get amongst the host rock with this stone 👌🏼

This beautiful stone is set in fine silver on a hand stamped solid sterling silver cuff. The design is my new favourite, using a half round Navajo stamp from New Mexico 🏜️

Perfect for stacking with other cuffs.

Available online now! 🧡

The reason I love opals so much, is because no two are ever the same!

All three of these stones are Australian boulder opal, yet the colours and shapes differ so greatly! From vivid aqua and brilliant blues, to pastel rainbows with flashes of pink 😍

These unique qualities cannot be recreated in a lab, or with faux stones. It took millions of years for Mother Earth to create these opals, in all their stunning glory.

Why would you want to buy an inferior knockoff when nature does the real thing so perfectly? ✨

Howdy! I’m Mandy, the hands behind the brand ☺️👋🏼

I started silversmithing 3 years ago, deciding to make a go of it as a business after graduating from a bachelor degree in animal ecology almost 2 years ago 🧡

I’m passionate about nature, authenticity, and creating art. These passions are the basis of the jewellery I create.

I only use genuine gemstones from the earth, paired with high quality sterling and fine silver. And with these I create art ✨

I don’t like to pigeon-hole myself into a style, as I like to design and create with flow, but boho western is the best way to describe it 🏜️

Creating art with Mother Nature’s treasures ✨

I feel lost when I don’t have a tangible connection to Earth. I feel myself positivity start to slide.

Creating art with natural gemstones which have come from the Earth allows me the connection I crave. It may be slight, but it’s a connection, nonetheless.

I am always in awe of what nature can create, like this beautiful pipe opal. That such colours are hidden deep beneath the surface of the Earth just blows my mind! 🤯

I am so humbled by beauty on this level, and the opportunity I have to work with it, creating heirloom pieces to be enjoyed and cherished for years to come 🧡

Why is buying genuine gemstones so important?

The fast fashion industry is synonymous with synthetic materials, and the same applies to mass produced jewellery. So many stones on the market are actually fakes!

So why is it important to buy jewellery with genuine stones? Here’s my fave few (and trust me, there’s many more!👌🏼)

💎 Unique: Genuine gemstones possess a unique charm that fake stones do not have. No two are ever the same!

💎 Ethic & Environmental: Stones from reputable sources often support ethical mining practices. Whereas synthetic stones can sometimes involve harmful chemicals and energy-intensive processes.

💎 Quality: Genuine gemstones generally offer superior quality and durability compared to their synthetic counterparts.

Nevada No. 8 turquoise 🩵

This beautiful turquoise was first discovered in Eureka County, Nevada in 1925 and mined in 1929. The Number 8 mine closed in 1976, meaning that the gem quality turquoise found there is all that will ever be available, pushing up the value of this stone as the stockpile is depleted.

The turquoise from this mine features a spider web matrix and a beautiful pale blue tone. 🩵

This Nevada No. 8 turquoise necklace is still currently available on our website 😍

No two opals are ever the same… that’s the beauty of natural gemstones from Mother Nature.

Unique and mesmerising, Australian boulder opals come in a myriad of colours, but one of my faves is the beautiful blue tones 🩵

The opal in this ring has a dark base and the waves of blue tones that flow across the face of the stone are truly amazing 😍

What’s your fave opal colours?

Opal or turquoise? 🤔

Opal and turquoise both hold a special place in my heart, for very different reasons. Both hold sentimental value from my childhood 🧡

Opals became a firm favourite when my grandfather gifted me a pair of opal earrings when I was little. He then gave me my grandmothers matching necklace after her death.

Turquoise and silver jewellery has always been a big part of my life, especially growing up, with my mother’s connection to it. 🩵

What’s your favourite stone?

Chunky silver and vibrant gemstones are my go to 👌🏼

I’ve been wearing statement jewellery since I was a teenager. Big bold stones in unique sterling silver settings.

When I started making my own jewellery I knew opals would feature heavily… nothing screams statement piece quite like an Australian opal 🫶🏼

I am always getting compliments on my rings in particular when I’m out and about. The large opals and turquoise stones catch peoples attention!

What’s your fave statement piece?

Slow fashion is here to stay.

Just like the garments and jewellery created in this way. Slow fashion is made with longevity in mind. Not the low quality, throw away crap that only lasts a season (if that!).

Slow made jewellery such as ours, is created using solid precious metals and genuine gemstones from the earth. Made to last, be passed down through the generations.

Top reasons you should shop slow made…

🙌🏼 Reduce waste: the amount of fast fashion clothing in landfill boggles the mind!

🙌🏼 Lower carbon footprint: fast fashion produces massive amounts of carbon emissions due to its mass production.

🙌🏼 Quality over quantity: slow fashion brands focus on creating high quality pieces made to last.

I get scared.

When I was younger I liked to play it safe, make myself small and fly under the radar. If people didn’t noticed me, then I wouldn’t make a fool of myself.

If I didn’t try, then I couldn’t fail… I could tell myself that I would’ve been able to make it happen, I just didn’t want to.

But that life got boring pretty quickly, and nothing changed. So I started pushing myself out of my comfort zone, I did the things (and failed at things), that made me scared.

And I’m still doing that. Life is a risk, embrace the unknown, chase your dreams, and remember that the greatest rewards come from taking chances.

When the ring band is so epic you don’t even look at the stone! 😍🙌🏼

I work with a lot of big statement stones… and most of the time, under that stone is an equally statement worthy band!

All hand crafted by me! ☺️🙌🏼

Which one is your favourite?

What’s my new fave stone? 🤔

You know my top two… opals and turquoise. But the new kid on the block is the amazing chrysocolla native copper! 😱

This beautiful stone (hand cut here in Australia) shows a beautiful mix of native copper with hints of chrysocolla (which is a secondary silicate of copper).

It’s the only piece I have… so run, don’t walk when this hits the website on Saturday 👀

Handmade = slow made 👌🏼

When you buy handmade you are not only supporting small business, and the dreams of artisans who love their craft (and trust me, that in itself is a good enough reason! 🥹), you are making a stand against fast fashion and large corporation.

Sounds like a grand statement, but that’s exactly what you’re doing. Every dollar spent with a small business, is a dollar not spent on mass production.

And buying handmade literally makes us makers do a happy dance… every time an order comes in 💃🏼

Need more convincing?
🫶🏼 Quality over quantity - buying handmade promotes mindful consumption

🫶🏼 Save the planet - most handmade products use more environmentally friendly, sustainable materials

🫶🏼 Stand out from the crowd - handmade is unique, you are usually buying a one of a kind item, especially when buying jewellery with natural gemstones 😉

Wear the desert 🏜️

I have always had a love for cacti and, by extension, desert scenery. I’ve had this design in mind for a while, to have a tangible connection to something that is a big part of who I am 🌵

And I know I’m not the only one! 😍 This one is for the desert lovers, and the cactus addicts!

Royston turquoise, sterling silver & solid 9ct gold.

When I wanted a piece of opal rough turned into a beautiful cab ready to be set into a ring, I walked in to the local gem club, hoping to find someone who could do the work for me.

Little did I know I would end up being taught to cut the opal myself, and how to create a ring with it! And that’s where my passion with silversmithing started. From there I continued to learn at home, through trial and error.

I had always loved the idea of creating jewellery that made me feel completely myself. Jewellery that told my story ~ an outward expression of who I was.

Once I started, I couldn’t stop, deciding to make a go of turning my passion project into a business, therefore not only helping myself, but also helping others to have access to jewellery that resonates with them.

You can read the full story on the blog on the website.
