PROTECT YOUR EYES FROM CHLORINE OR POOL WATER
Summer is the perfect time to take a refreshing dip in the pool. However, chlorine-treated swimming pools can irritate or even harm your eyes. Here are some steps you can take to protect your eyes from chlorinated pool water:
✅ Wear a pair of swim goggles every time you swim. Goggles keep pool chemicals out of your eyes, helping to keep your tear film healthy.
✅ Splash your closed eyes with fresh water immediately after swimming. This washes chlorine and other chemicals off your eyelids and eyelashes.
✅ Use over-the-counter lubricating eye drops before and after swimming to keep the tear film balanced and eyes comfortable.
✅ If you have dry eye, you can help protect your tear film by putting in thicker artificial tears or “gel tears” before putting on your goggles. Check with your ophthalmologist to see about prescription eye drops as well.
Consult your ophthalmologist for more information.

PREVENT SORE EYES THIS DRY SEASON
The Department of Health (DOH) has warned the public about sore eyes, one of the common ailments during the dry months of summer. Here are some steps you can take to prevent sore eyes:
✅ Minimize exposure to direct sunlight, particularly during midday, to reduce the risk of contracting sore eyes and other seasonal illnesses.
Wear eyeglasses or sunglasses on windy days to protect your eyes from foreign particles.
✅ Wash hands frequently and thoroughly with soap and water. Minimize hand-to-eye contact.
✅ Use your own towels, eyedrops, makeup and sunglasses.
✅ Disinfect surfaces, doorknobs, counters, elevator buttons, and handrails with dilute bleach solution.
✅ Avoid crowded places.
✅ Wash clothes, towels, pillowcases, and anything else which may have come in contact with a person with sore eyes.
Talk to your ophthalmologist for more information about sore eyes prevention.

WHAT CAUSES EYE BAGS?
As we grow older, tissues around our eyes gradually weaken and sag. The loss of skin tone allows fat to shift forward into the lower eyelids, making them look puffy and swollen. Fluid can also pool in this area and lead to swelling (edema) which can contribute to the puffy appearance.
Shadows may also appear under the eyes. They may be cast by swollen, puffy eyelids due to aging. Other factors that can contribute to eye bags include inadequate sleep, smoking, allergies, retaining fluid (often after waking up, or after eating salty food), and inheriting the condition (it can run in families).

HOME REMEDIES FOR SIMPLE EYE PROBLEMS
To reduce swelling and ease the pain of a black eye on the first day, apply an ice pack to the eye for 15 to 20 minutes at a time, once every 4 to 6 hours for the first day or two. Use over-the-counter antihistamine eye drops to ease eye allergy symptoms, artificial tears to wash allergens from your eyes, and allergen-reducing covers for your bed. For a stye, run a washcloth under warm water, wring it out and place it over your closed eye. Repeat this three to four times a day for at least a week.
If symptoms don’t go away or worsen, see your ophthalmologist.

CATARACT SURGERY: FACTORS TO CONSIDER
Talk to your ophthalmologist about the type of intraocular lens (IOL) that meets your vision needs, lifestyle, and budget. PhilHealth and most insurance companies and HMOs provide coverage for cataract surgery. Take into account that it may take days to weeks to recover from cataract surgery. Your ophthalmologist will talk with you about how active you can be soon after surgery. Like any surgical procedure, cataract surgery carries risks of problems or complications.

WHEN TO HAVE AN EYE EXAM
For adults whose eyes are healthy and vision is good, the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) recommends a complete eye exam done by an ophthalmologist once in their 20s and twice in their 30s. The AAO recommends that adults get a complete eye examination at age 40 when early signs of disease or changes in vision may appear. Early diagnosis and prompt treatment of eye diseases are vital.
Consult your ophthalmologist for more information.

CATARACT SURGERY CAN RESTORE CLEAR VISION
In cataract surgery, an ophthalmologist replaces the eye's cloudy lens with a new artificial lens, called an intraocular lens or IOL. The IOL often eliminates or reduces the need for glasses by correcting a person's near, middle or distance vision.
Cataract surgery successfully restores clear vision in the majority of people who undergo the procedure. Talk to your eye doctor for more information on the benefits of cataract surgery.

SMOKING AND YOUR EYES
Aside from causing lung disease, heart disease, cancer, and many other serious health problems, smoking can also harm your eyes. Smoking can worsen dry eye and Grave's disease; increase your risk for cataracts, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic retinopathy (if you are diabetic), optic nerve problems, and glaucoma; and lead to uveitis (inflammation of the middle layer of the eyeball).
Consult your ophthalmologist for more information on how smoking can affect your eyes.

WHAT IS TRADITIONAL CATARACT SURGERY?
In traditional cataract surgery (phacoemulsification), the surgeon uses a scalpel to create a small incision in the cornea and insert a small probe that applies ultrasound to break up the cloudy lens. Then the surgeon suctions out the broken-up pieces and replaces the lens with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL). The surgeon closes the incision with a special liquid and self-seal. Stitches are commonly not needed.
Consult an ophthalmologist for more information about phacoemulsification.
