Check out what Elizabeth Carter is working & advocating for. She is employed at Blue Cross Blue Shield (Customer Service Team) and by speaking to members daily, opened her eyes to the overwhelming need for B12 deficiency education for healthcare providers & for proper B12 treatment to be practiced in the U.S. She herself suffered from late diagnosis/treatment.
Elizabeth’s petition is shining the spotlight on understanding & changing clinical practice!

JOIN US IN CELEBRATING SALLY’S EMPLOYEE RECOGNITION—Sally was very nice and she helped me out a lot! She got me a new bed, food and made sure I was fine. She asked if I needed extra blankets and just took very good care of me. Sally is a very good nurse. She was helpful and answered all my questions. I believe she went above and beyond anyone else here. She has been the best nurse I have ever had!

Vitamin B12 Deficiency is the dominant nutritional cause of high homocysteine in folic-acid-fortified populations. What was ignored in folic acid fortification: 1) The shared metabolism of B12/Folate, 2) the masking of B12 deficiency when people consume folic acid (synthetic folate made in a lab)

Vitamin B12 Deficiency Awareness, Education, Symptoms, Misdiagnosis, Groups at Risk, Treatment 24/01/2020

Common vitamin saves patient's life in open heart surgery 15/01/2020

Always thought hydroxocobalamin IV should be tried in resuscitations (ACLS protocol)—especially in older adults, in patients that are high risk for B12 deficiency, & especially during surgical resuscitations. Why not & what do you have to lose? Now someone is studying this!
Practitioners need to understand the biochemistry of cobalamin. Elderly are notoriously misdiagnosed for B12 deficiency, nitrous oxide during surgery causes B12 deficiency & is dangerous for those who are already low or deficient. Problem is doctors & medical institutions are not testing patients!
Septic patients are also higher risk for B12 deficiency. Low B12 causes high homocysteine, increasing ones risk for stroke, MI, PE, or DVT. We should not be using cyanocobalamin, but using hydroxocobalamin.
Wondering if this particular patient was unknowingly B12 deficient &/or if they were administering nitrous
oxide during this surgery?
Research is needed to ascertain if using hydroxocobalamin in emergent conditions helps treat severe hypotension/shock during cardiac arrest. (As well as calculate how many admitted patients had appropriate B12 screening before hypotensive or cardiac arrest event.) Does it only aid those who were originally low, or chronically untreated? Or did we cause the problem giving nitrous oxide to patients with low/poor or no B12 stores.
This is why testing & B12 Awareness is a must—especially in hospitalized patients!

Common vitamin saves patient's life in open heart surgery An anesthesiologist may have discovered a way to save a patient's life when the heart is about to stop and nothing else is working: Vitamin B12.
