Good grief!

Over the last week, we’ve introduced three areas of concern to consider in selecting the next school board members this year as CFSD voters.

First, graduation rates have declined every year over the past 7 years to an all time low of 88% worse than many other districts in Pima County.

Second, CFSD has seen fewer National Merit awards in each of the last three years.

Third, the number of students meeting proficiency in math and science have dropped nearly 1/3 since 2017.

As we approach the election, you will hear more cases like these. We love this district and are saddened by the turn we took under the current board. The goal is to point out the concerns so we can fix them. Ignoring them by pretending we’re still the #1 school district is not a good option. We can do better.

How can CFSD Presodent Jackson keep her job after running math proficiency into the ground? The answer is up to you because she’s asking for your vote this November. Will you let her continue this trend?

Oh boy!

There's been much discussion over the Best Schools '20-'24 CFSD infographic we posted a few days ago. Here's the four ranking factors used by US News & World Report in their analysis. This time, we're showing you how we compare with other schools here in AZ. Will you vote for the Jackson board to continue this trend?

👍

A Phoenix school district just voted on a policy change to safeguard students, families, and staff from the unlawful practice of mental health diagnosis/treatment by unlicensed counselors and returns their primary focus to academic counseling where it rightfully belongs. We should do this too, but the Jackson board refuses requests from district parents to add this topic to a meeting agenda. Why does Eileen Jackson refuse to even talk about protecting students, families, and district staff in light of the new law that went into effect Feb 9, 2024?

30/05/2024

🤔

We can’t get better if we ignore our weaknesses. That’s why it’s so odd when supporters of the Jackson board tell us to use tax dollars to enroll in private school. If they suggest these alternatives, why do they insist that we only compare CFSD’s performance to competing “public schools?” If private schools are the alternative, why don’t we try to match their quality? Besides, public schools get way more funding than private ones do. Part of the reason may be that CFSD is no longer keeping up with other Pima County schools. Let’s turn this around! There are school board candidates who can not only return CFSD to the #1 public school in Pima County but the top school overall. Do you?

Remove the threat to our district!

CFSD board president Jackson wants you to vote for her slate of candidates so she can continue her impact on our district:

2021: 92.6% grad rate, 9 National Merit awards
2022: 89.3% grad rate, 8 National Merit awards
2023: 88.0% grad rate, 7 National Merit awards
2024: TBA grad rate, 3 National Merit awards

According to the Military Times, 26 men and women from Tucson have been killed in military service since Catalina Foothills High School's first graduating class of 1996. There's no reference to their high school alma mater but they are our neighbors to be remembered this Memorial Day weekend and forever.

Time to change the board

CFSD has seen 3 former employees accused of s*x crimes or misconduct in the last 3 years and still refuses to fix their flawed hiring practices to keep kids safe.

#1/3 CFSD took "no action" after parent reported inappropriate conduct by VVES PE teacher Joshua Silverton. Later, in May 2021, he was arrested for soliciting s*x with a 14-year-old girl while holding a teaching position at another school in Colorado. https://web.archive.org/web/20220930060634/https://www.csindy.com/news/concerns-were-raised-about-monterey-elementary-teacher-before-may-arrest/article_bb557106-ce20-11eb-aeb7-efd51b161518.html

#2/3 Despite viral news of Nkechi Diallo's name change (aka Rachel Dolezal) and online p**n store, CFSD hired her anyway. 8 mos later, they changed their mind. https://t.co/xZI2fZU9Ao

#3/3 Last year, CFHS math teacher Brett P. Smith left CFSD and sought a new job at Crismon High School in Queen Creek where he was arrested for exposing p**nographic images to kids. https://t.co/5aIGR95oYt

Great work by the PCSD and TPD on swiftly addressing this local school threat. This is the kind of resolution and press release we can expect when there is a real threat reported to PCSD rather than the fake ones CFSD reported for political reasons on April 25th, 2023. We proudly support our local responders and value their time on real threats made to our children and community.

This is one of those difficult yet important issues. There’s a way to address gender identity without showing a bias but that’s not even the main issue. For me (and a few other parents), the issue is more about parental rights. Here’s a little context before you read the letter…

On Thursday, I asked our son about his day. He said instead it was a "counselor day." Counselor Garrett Wilton showed a slide of a combined girl-boy image saying "I know this might get you fired up” and proceeded to explain that kids can choose their own gender (or deny it altogether). He then handed out a sheet with a blank "identity flower" instructing the kids to fill in their chosen gender pronouns plus info on their family, race, spirituality, ability, neighborhood, and school. This was then collected as an assignment or some kind of record. I emailed the counselor asking for all the materials and educational objectives. I never received a response from the counselor but got a call from principal Mary Setliff the next day which was appreciated.

She stated their goal is to be inclusive and not controversial. She said they have an increasing number of trans kids and are grasping for ways to deal with it. One of the counselors went to a student counselor association conference in Vegas this summer which inspired this session on identity. Thursday's session was a PE/Health lesson and was not part of the optional s*x ed program. The kids were told they could cross out parts they didn't want to disclose and then to turn in the assignment for credit.

So that’s the story. I’ve discussed this with several ECMS families and here’s our response. I’d love your feedback whatever that might be.
