Bo says toys that aren’t mine are the best ones! ;)
She’s a good girl though, and gave it up without too much complaining!
We would like to introduce our new title incentive program for our puppy owners! Check it out for all our current and future puppy owners!
https://www.flyingsquirrelretrievers.com/title-incentives.html
Remember, submitting an application to a breeder's program is just the start of getting to know each other 💙
Let’s talk muzzles! Muzzles are not for ‘bad dogs’… but they are an amazing tool for ANY dog! All our dogs are muzzle trained for emergencies. (ANY dog can bite in the right situation!) this conditioning and training came in handy when one of our girls had a mass removed on her leg, and she was pulling on her bandages.. she was miserable wearing a cone of shame, but was happy, and comfortable wearing her muzzle!
Currently .muzzle.movement is having a give away where you could win a great muzzle set for your pooch!
We had a fun couple of days at the Vermont Scenic Circuit Dog Show! Winnie has been showing so well this year, and I couldn’t be more proud of her! 🖤🖤
We finished off our show day with taking reserve winners bitch!
Allee of Crabb’s Creations did it again! I’ve been meaning to get an updated portrait of Winnie and she captured her beautifully! 🥰🖤
Can’t wait to get this on the wall!
Thank you again Allee!!
LET’S TALK TOOLS
Red Arrow: Harness that fits around the dog’s body and when connected to a clip leash, creates a pulling reaction from the dog. This pulling reaction triggers the shoulders and chest muscles to be used which then influences the dog to use strength to get where they need to. If you have properly trained your dog to walk right next to you on a harness, you will not experience the pulling. Congratulations, I have yet to see this. 😂
Orange Arrow: Flat collar, usually used to connect a clip leash to and often times sits on the bottom of the neck due to gravity and the dog’s head being higher than the shoulders. This then triggers the dog’s shoulder muscles and the pulling starts. Again, this teaches the dog that strength needs to be used to get where they need to. If you have properly trained your dog to walk next to you on a flat collar, you will not experience the pulling. The majority of dogs I see are pulling during this setup.
Blue Arrow: Slip Leash is very high on the neck where it is placed behind the ears, behind the jaw bone, and it allows us to influence the dog’s head and brain. Shoulders and chest muscles are not triggered and physical strength is not used during the walk. When used correctly, little to no pressure is on the leash and physical strength is used by the dog to get from point A to point B. If you have properly trained your dog to walk next to you on a slip leash, you will not experience any pulling.
Out of the 3 tools shown, the slip leash is one of the most productive tools to create a structured walk, a calm mind, and a solid relationship.
Ever watch anyone walk a horse by the saddle?
Yeah, me either.
That’s because when you walk a 1000lb animal, you need to influence the brain and not the body.
Let’s start influencing our dog’s mentally and not physically.
With the Fourth if July nearly here, make sure to keep your pups safe! Not all dogs tolerate fireworks well. It is best to keep pets home during firework shows, and if you have to bring pets out to relive themselves a proper fitted martingale collar and leash is ideal when going out so they cannot slip their collar if spooked and take off.
Making sure microchip information is current is also important!
And if your pup requires calming supplements or medications, reach out to your vet, or go to the store now to gather these items before it is too late.
Hope everyone has a fun, safe holiday! 🎆🇺🇸
Bo says it’s HOT! The only place to be outside is in the pool!
We figured, as many of our puppies have their own Instagram pages, we would give a shoutout to them and others who would be interested could give a follow!

She placed second in her class both days, and showed amazing! We have come a long way, and I am so proud of her!
Don't forget our big event Sunday, June 9th! Working Certificate, Conformation Certificate and Two FETCH trials.

Our lovely girls getting ready for our show season 🖤🤎
Puppies are puppies, not adults
They don't have developed bodies or brains and it's unfair to place expectations on them as if they do
Would you ask a kindergartener to get a master's degree? When we expect puppies to learn and behave like adults, we set them up to fail. Even a 2 year old dog may have a developed body, but their brains are still cooking in there, just like a 20 year old human.
Yes, dogs and humans are different, but sometimes we need to understand the parallels between our development in order to set reasonable expectations. Look back on your developmental years and imagine having today's adult expectations placed on you. It just isn't reasonable or fair, is it?
Another common problem I see (and have fallen victim to) is the curse of the 2nd service dog. We put so much focus into that perfect first dog who saved us, and forget that they weren't always that fully trained adult. When a puppy can't live up to the standards set by that retired or passed dog, resentment can build and harm your relationship. Your 2nd dog will never be your first, but we need to prioritize bonding with the new dog *as they are,* including stage of development. A teenage puppy can never be as good as a trained adult and that is OKAY! It doesn't say anything negative about the puppy other than that they aren't developed enough to have all those skills mastered.
Giving puppies grace is one of the most important things we can do in order to set everyone up for success as a team
Petri is still a do**us, but after 4 months old he definitely didn't get stuck in a tomato cage again. He did that because he was a puppy who hadn't yet figured out how to use his body and brain, which is completely normal
Remember to stop and sniff the flowers! -Bo
