Last year I done an episode with Craig Preedy talking about the ADI part 1 test and how people are struggling with it. For the last few months myself and Craig have been working on the ADI Part 1 Podcast this is more than just a podcast, we we will also be offering an 8 hour course along with support specifically to help you with the ADI part 1 test.

We believe this course will not only help you through your part 1 but also the part 2 & 3 tests.

What use is guessing the answer to a question if you don't understand the subject? (This is what I tried twice, and failed twice)

What good does it do you if someone tells you the answer to a specific question, but you don't know where the information can be found?

This is what we want to help you with. It's not a course that gives you the answers to the part 1 questions, but helps you find your own answers and build your own knowledge. This is fundamental to being a driving instructor, we don't need to know everything - we can't, but we need to know how to find it.

The podcast will be 8 episodes, followed by a monthly episode.

The course will be 4x 2 hour zoom sessions spread over 4 weeks, with studying in-between. Support throughout the process and advice as you need it.

An ADI part 1 theory course! Since starting the podcast I have learnt a huge amount, part of that has been how important the part 1 is to help you develop as an ADI.

We will also be putting out a new podcast! Based primarily around the Part 1 test - ADI Part 1 Podcast - or APP for short 😁

This course will help you understand the test, the subjects and why it is so important at the early stage of becoming an ADI.

We have put a lot of work into it and I truly believe it will help not just for the part 1, but all stages of being an ADI!

🚦Did the trainer maintain an appropriate non-discriminatory manner throughout the session

I want to share some insight into this competence as it is all about your pupils’ opinions, beliefs and worldviews…All of which are huge factors in people’s behavioural intentions.

Firstly, with regards to your pupils’ worldviews and opinions of others. It is easy to fall into the trap of reinforcing your pupils’ attitudes towards others and increasing the risks your pupils may take post-test by colluding with their views. We may agree with a pupil’s view on certain drivers, but we don’t understand where those views originate from or how they would impact on their behaviour due to their personality traits or emotional states in the future. Developing empathy towards the ‘offending driver’ can ease your pupil’s strength of opinion and de-escalate their responses before they escalate. Putting your pupils into the shoes of the other driver and getting them to consider how that person’s thoughts and feelings plus what might be going on in their life…might impact on their own behaviour can be a great way to recalibrate their attitudes.

Secondly, we must consider inhibiting beliefs and how people’s belief system around who they are can have a massive impact on their future actions. Take a pupil who has always believed that they get everything wrong. They tell you this in lesson one and you accept it and create a little nickname for them. When they eventually pass their test, they will carry their own limiting beliefs with them as they head into complex situations believing they ‘get everything wrong’. This is not the safest approach to take into a potentially dangerous situation. However, if we rewind to the initial conversation and challenge that belief and help the pupil to understand their strengths as they go through their learning…’perhaps driving is my thing?’ What difference could this new enabling belief make to their approach to complex situations post- test.
