Heat stress in dogs is a serious concern, especially during hot weather. Dogs are susceptible to heatstroke, which can be life-threatening if not addressed promptly.

Some signs of heat stress in dogs include excessive panting, difficulty breathing, drooling, weakness, and collapse.
It’s crucial to provide shade, fresh water, and never leave a dog in a parked car, or carry them out on the van trays even for a short time, as temperatures can quickly become dangerously high.
Additionally, avoid strenuous exercise during the hottest parts of the day and be mindful of hot pavement, which can burn a dog’s paw pads.

If you suspect your dog is suffering from heat stress, seek veterinary care immediately.

Be reminded that with Valentine’s Day soon approaching and chocolate 🍫 being the food of love 💕😘🥰 it’s important you have a talk with any children around pets as they tend to be the Culprits in these situations.
Feeding chocolate to your pet will have your spending your day quite unexpectedly in the animal ER. 🐕🤮

⚠️The Darker the chocolate the more toxic 🍫😰

The Dalai Lama has a famous quote that says "be kind whenever possible.
It is always possible."

No matter what life brings us today, remember to bring kindness to the situation.

Just like us humans, Dogs and Cats have baby or milk teeth that are replaced by their Adult or Permanent teeth. Unlike us their replacement does not result in a period of an absence of a teeth ( gap) while the adult teeth grows in 🙌🦷
Though very few owners get to withness or notice this change of teeth, Some owners have seen their pet's teeth "fall out" and tend to be freaked out. We as Vets then need to have the calming discussion of informing owners that their puppy or kitten is simply changing teeth.

Usually all Adult teeth are in by 6 months old. If you notice teeth are "falling out" past 8 months then it would be a cause for concern 😓

They lied to us all!😮😮 Imagne my surprise when I shamefully found out in Vet school that a dog's mouth is NOT clearner than ours 😢 so in case you still thought " A dogs mouth is clearner than a human's," I'm here to tell you it is indeed a myth.

February is dedicated as Pet dental health month and as such we'll talk about Dental Health and I'm sure a few things will surprise you!

There is so much to be learned from dogs 🧘🏼‍♀️ Live will forever give us situations to challenge us but instead of fretting how about we approach those situations more like dogs and simply walk away. 😌

In our one health definition the word zoonosis was used.
Zoonotic diseases impact us significantly hence it’s worthy mention and explanation.
“Zoonoses comprise a large percentage of all newly identified infections diseases as well as many existing ones. Some diseases, such as HIV began as a zoonosis but later mutate into human-only strains. Other zoonoses can cause recurring disease outbreaks such as Ebola virus disease and salmonella”
- World Health Organization

Listed are a few common zoonotic diseases.

Tis the season for indulgence 🤤 Christmas can be a dangerous time for pets with potentially poisonous treats adorning every open surface. Here are a few to avoid.
•Ham and Lamb- these high fat foods can cause pancreatic disease. 🤒

•Grapes and Raisins- can lead to kidney failure 😣

• Chocolates -causes vomiting, diarrhea and in extreme cases can lead to cardiac arrest and seizures 💔

•Xylitol- the artificial sweetener in most candies 🍭 causes a drop in blood sugar in pets, leaving them feeling weak and leading to seizures

•Onions, Garlic and Chives- lead to vomiting and diarrhea and the destruction of red blood cells ( causing anemia). Avoid feeling table scraps as these are common seasoning in our food.

•Alcohol 🍷🍻🍾- causes severe liver and brain damage in pets with as little as a tablespoon

⚠️ tips: feed pets before festivities so they are full and reduces their chances of begging.
Let guest know not to feed pets and you can also provide safe treats they can give.

Merry Christmas to everyone and let’s hope you don’t have to go to the ER with your pets this Holiday season. 🎄

This is an excellent post as it highlights many common plants 🪴 in tropical households that should be reconsidered if you own a cat 🐈

The weather has been so bipolar recently ⛈🌞🌤 we previously talked about some of the risk with the rain so today we highlight one major issues for pets that the heat causes HEAT STRESS 🥵
prompt recognition and treatment is key to preventing death to your pets 🔑 and yes

Heat stress really affects cats 🐈 yayyy! another one for team cats 🥳 but short faced dogs like the Pugs, bulldogs, boxers and long thick coat dogs like the Akita and Husky are especially prone though all dogs can be affected.

Prevention:
* if it’s too hot for you outside it’s probably too hot for your pet too 😩🥵
* avoid traveling with pets on the tray of vehicles 🛻 at mid day sun ☀️
* don’t leave animals in your car while running chores
* don’t run with animals during very sunny hours of the day, like mid day ☀️🥵
* When running with a pet always carry water for them also and understand their limits (excessive panting 😮‍💨)
* Make sure animals always have access water and to shaded areas, especially when outside.

View the picture to see early signs of heat stress and ways you can assist before getting your pet to the vet!

Note: BLACK ABSORBS HEAT there for black coated animals tend to get affect a lot faster. 🐕‍🦺 😢

Be kind to all creatures great and small.
It’s our responsibility to care for those that we have taken away the ability to care from themselves.

04/10/2021

Soooo 😏did you give your heartworm 🪱 prevention this month? I know I’ve missed a couple months of reminders but I hope you still remembered.

It’s important that Heartworm preventive be given EVERY MONTH. Heart worm disease is easy to prevent and VERY expensive to treat.
Talk to your vet about what are the available options in your region 🌎

🥼Friendly Vet Tip:
# of cats + 1 is the ideal litter box formula!

If you grew up with siblings and had to share a bathroom, this formula should make a lot of sense to you. Sharing bathrooms can cause conflict, stress, and inconvenience. The same idea goes for cats!

Cats are very sensitive and usually don’t like sharing. Having multiple litter boxes prevents your cats from competing for space and reduces stress.

🧐“But what if I just have one cat?” If you live in a small apartment and just have one cat, you may not need an extra litter box. But I still recommend adding an extra litter box if you live in a larger, multi-story home. This added convenience will make a happy cat! 😻

In the past 20 years it is become widely recognized that for skittish or shut down adults and children who are unable to connect to humans, other mammals help. Dogs, horses and dolphins offer less complicated companionship while providing the necessary sense of safety thats these persons need. 🐩 🐕 Dogs in particular are now extensively used to treat some groups of trauma patients.
