What are the differences between direct speech and reported speech?

Let’s be guided by the following sentences:

𝘿𝙞𝙧𝙚𝙘𝙩 𝙎𝙥𝙚𝙚𝙘𝙝:
1. Marites said, “I like your storybook.”
2. Freddie said, “I learned to ride a bike last week.”

𝙍𝙚𝙥𝙤𝙧𝙩𝙚𝙙 𝙎𝙥𝙚𝙚𝙘𝙝:
1. Marites said that she liked my storybook.
2. Freddie said that he had learned to ride a bike last week.

Based on the given examples, we can say that 𝐝𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐞𝐜𝐡 is a report on what someone else said using the exact words. The exact message of the speaker is enclosed by quotation marks.

𝐑𝐞𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐞𝐜𝐡, on the other hand, is also known as indirect speech. It is about reporting what someone else said without using that person’s exact words. Reported speech does not use quotation marks.
