1954 Chattanooga Area Ads
Taken from the Southern Memories Yearbook of Southern Missionary College in Collegedale, TN. There were more ads than this, but here are the ones I thought were the most interesting.
Paperback Book Dealers
Many years ago every town and city had paperback book dealers. You could usually swap 2 or 3 books you had read, for another one. Most of them had a rubber stamp and stamped the first page of each book. Sadly over the years most of them have disappeared.
A few years ago I started collecting those stamped pages, and now have several hundred. Eventually I may put a list of them online, but for now here are a few from around Chattanooga.
Briar & To***co was my favorite. They sold pipe to***co, so instead of your book smelling like a used paperback, it smelled like pipe to***co (which in my opinion smells much better before it is smoked).
Alamosa, Colorado Ads
Taken from the Presbyterian Church Cookbook in 1910. I am not sure how large Alamosa was in 1910, but most of the businesses in town must have placed an ad.
I go to a lot of estate sales and occasionally find some very interesting items. The first is an original painting from 1918, the other is a macrame clock holder.
Here is a copy of the phone book ads for new cars in Chattanooga, TN in 1963, quite a few changes have taken place.
I often find information that is interesting (to me anyway) and may help someone with their historical or genealogy research. But, it is Not Quite Genealogy. I hope you enjoy it.
