Based on the evidence, the Sumerian royal family began when Inanna arrived from her ancestral mountain home of Aratta and founded Uruk in about 5000 BC. According to the literature, Inanna then planted her royal family tree in her Holy Garden. Over the next 1800 years that tree grew and became so ancient that members of the Sumerian royal family were worshipped as gods, the first gods we know by name. The last Sumerian royal couple was Enlil and Ninlil who were overthrown in Nippur in 3200 BC, while Ninlil's mother Nisaba was overthrown in Uruk when the city was destroyed and brought an end to the Uruk period. These are the bare basics of a fascinating archeological story.
