Did you know the magnetic North Pole can move around? In recent decades it has left the coast of Canada and is moving toward Russia. Is this a big deal? It can be for those who place GPS satellites in orbit. But most people are unaware of the move.

Surely you did know the truths of the Bible don’t move around like that. Yet in recent years some denominations have been moving on their positions regarding women in ministry and in the family. Is this a problem? It can be if the move is away from the truths of the Bible. Yet most people are unaware of these moves.

Why are some denominations so focused on restricting women from ministry and in the home?

The denominations? You can probably name them. (One of them commissioned Joy and me as seminary professors.) These denominations are working on changing their bylaws to officially restrict women. They happen to be denominations that work very hard to respect the content of Scripture. They are very good in teaching many basic Christian doctrines. Yet life inside their doors is stifling for women and girls, and in effect for men too.

Is there a problem? The problem is that they think they are fighting heresy on the highest level. They think the “clobber” passages really do say those things. They think they are safeguarding good theology and good theological research. Yet are they?

Which passages do they focus on the most? One or two, the ones that refer back to the Garden of Eden. They think there is a God-ordained hierarchical order to the way God organized the world. They point to what they see as the “headship” of men in marriage and they use Ephesians 5 as their proof text. They point, as well, to what they call the “creation order” of hierarchy and they use 1 Timothy 2 as their proof text. And in order to use these texts these ways they point back over and over again to Genesis 2-3 and what they say is an established God-given hierarchy.

Before these last decades of disputing took place, tucked away in the middle of Africa, Dr. Joy Fleming researched the Hebrew language patterns and content of Genesis 2-3. She looked up from her work to point out that in Eden God didn’t curse Eve (or Adam) or limit woman in any way. She also pointed out that there were two rebels who consciously went against God’s will in Eden – the serpent enemy and the man. These two were first-degree offenders. The woman on the other hand did not purposefully rebel. She was a second-degree offender. God spoke to the two rebels using the same six-point pattern in verses 14-15 and 17-19. But God treated the woman very differently and confirmed the Good News would come about through her offspring.

With these insights in mind, namely the patterns used in Genesis 2-3 and the distinctions revealed between the attacker and the attacked, we may point out to these wandering denominations the positive meaning of Ephesians 5 and 1 Timothy 2.
