Progradar’s Review of 2021 09/01/2022

★ Great to see LOVE'S LOST PROPERTY appearing in PROGRADAR's Review of the Best Albums of 2021....

"‘Love’s Lost Property’ is an exquisite creation, nine tracks of wondrously charming music with Rachel’s honeyed vocals lifting this release well above what you may have heard already this year. I suggest you get your hands on it as soon as you can, it is definitely worth seeking out."

Progradar’s Review of 2021 I’ve had a little time to digest what was a rather wonderful year of music in 2021. Here is my review of the year with my favourite albums, in no particular order barring my number one! Trans…

Which is the best streaming service for supporting artists? 03/12/2021

From a personal point of view, I appreciate that for some people, streaming is an entry point to new artists, whose music they then go on to buy as a CD or download. But as a source of income for any but those who are streaming billions of times, its economic contribution to their income is so small as to be an irrelevance.

Prompted by reading this article, I actually went through my last royalty statement for the period 01/06/21 to 30/06/20 to seperate out my income from streaming, something I've never done before.

The results were surprising in two ways: how many times the songs had been streamed and how much income those streams generated.

a) I was amazed to find that songs by KARNATAKA, PANIC ROOM, LUNA ROSSA & THREE COLOURS DARK on which I am a songwriter/performer were streamed 805,574 times.

b) The amount of money I was paid for those streams was £14.28... in total.

My 'income' for a 6 month period from over 800,000 streams was just £14.28. An amount less than I would earn from selling 2 album downloads on Bandcamp or 2 CDs.

Fortunately, I earn just about enough from CDs and downloads to finance the next music project... and that's how it is for a lot of independent artists. What they earn from their music isn't really 'income' as most people consider it, it's the capital to finance the next album, which a lot of artists (myself included) also subsidise with other non-music related jobs. The 'music industry' may be making money from streaming, but the actual creators of the music that's being streamed certainly aren't.

As the author himself concludes: "The best way to support musicians you care about is to buy their albums on CD or digitally from Bandcamp, go to their concerts, buy their merchandise, join their fan clubs, follow them on Instagram, subscribe to their Patreons, and so on. That way, they will get far more of your cash than they would get from Spotify and similar services. Better than that, they will feel their work is appreciated, which is what most artists actually want."

Which is the best streaming service for supporting artists? Robert still listens to MP3s but wants wants to know which music service pays artists best

Chantel McGregor

Beautiful rendition of John Prine's 'Angel From Montgomery' sung and played by Chantel McGregor who played some mean blues guitar on the track 'Blood Moon Rising' on our new album.

I wanted to do a little video of 'Angel From Montgomery', as a tribute to John Prine, who sadly passed away on 7th of April 2020.
