Introduction Episode 3
Basis of eclectic approach to therapy – Part 1

conscious vs unconscious

unconscious helping with a lot of tasks that we are doing naturally but, in a therapy setting clients come with their problems so it is usually associated with causing hindrance/problems

intelligent system - doing good and bad automatically

belief decision and defense mechanism which we have accepted repeatedly contained in the critical filter - partly lay in conscious and unconscious - determines which info goes into the unconscious

decision by critical filter

once conscious choses that info that has gone into the unconscious - the unconscious will act upon it - can't ignore critical filter

critical filter forms by repetitive info that we are accessing, the decision we are making and the beliefs we are accepting/acknowledging

c.f- role of gatekeeper some info not in sync with underlying belief already there - likely to reject/distort the idea

critical filter more powerful than conscious
comes in way of consciously changing the unconscious

critical filter itself changes as result of constant repetitive behavior

critical filter - powered by the unconscious

if directly changing unconscious we can bypass the critical filter - critical filter itself can be changed
cf vs unconcious - uc more powerful
c vs uc - c more powerful
c vs cf - cf more

all equally important

hypnosis - helps bypass the critical filter

one way of inducing hypnotic state - bombard with info
final suggestion as relief - chance of acceptance high - short term effect
relief needs to have long term benefit - next time client already in a receptive state
fff response - unconscious mind

another way of inducing hypnotic state is to get in touch with intense emotions either negative or positive connected to experiences in the unconscious
get in touch with emotions - access that memory vividly - access to unconscious

mindfulness - another way
focus on specific aspects of their experience
once focus established it can be moved from body sensations to the thoughts/suggestions we are giving them
focus completely on those thoughts - receptive state - trans like

relaxation comes into play
making people mindful of relaxation then you start shifting focus to suggestions - only for people who can easily enter relaxation/calm state for others make them relax after hypnotic state

hypnosis about receptivity

pacing/ help them focus on current experience and leading/ help them focus on what you want them to focus on

hypnotic process usually combine all of these technique

def of hypnosis: follow the suggestion you are giving them, and the client is able to continue on that journey with you w/o any conflict or internal struggle, state of receptivity

Introduction Episode 2 - What is eclectic approach to therapy?
What skills are required by therapist to deal with all these layers?
Ability to understand the client
Making them feel understood
Asking the right questions
Listening w/o judgement and prejudice

Ability to communicate literally and metaphorically

skills to help people create clearly defined and inspiring future

help client shift their focus from past into present and future

skills to work with conditioned behavior and feelings, also with thoughts beliefs values positive intention
help release suppressed intense emotions and replace with constructive one

recover repressed memories and help client work with them in a way that the entire focus remains on the client and the client is driving the session

these skills can be learned from different fields of psychology/approaches to therapy

integration should be seamless, synergistic

understanding that
all approaches in psychology/technique – require client to accept and implement changes at the conscious and unconscious level
highly effective if client is in a receptive state

Introduction

lesson 1 - Understanding different layers of a problem
different strategies maybe used for different layers

1- presenting problem client brings to us

position A - presenting problem
patient intended position B – where issues/problems are resolved or some aim is achieved
need to move from position A to B

2- client’s ability to understand the problem and the solution they want to achieve

client may not be able to articulate the first layer i.e. unclear about A and B - their current position (strengths and weaknesses/lacking qualities, problems not clearly expressed) and the desired outcome

for e.g, aware they are unhappy but do not know the cause, or aware of the problem but not clear of the solution in which case they understand A but not B
possibility that when outcome they are searching for is explored further (if they think particular outcome to be their aim) in the process they might realize it is not what they want and previously had not completely understood the implications of their outcome – therapist thus needs to ask the right questions such as what do they want to achieve, what problem they currently facing/where they are

after first layer is defined A and B, the changes to be made, should be reflected in their behavior

3- behavior - current one which they want to change - new one they want to inculcate - how to make the transition from old to new

client may be unaware of their existing behavior or what would be the new behavior to create the desired change (problem to outcome) - or may know what their current behavior is and what they want to change but don't know how to go about it - next layer = behavior

resistance to behavior change
4 categories
Lacking:
1)clarity
2)resources – money
3)skills
4)mental state -ability to manage thoughts and emotions

4- thoughts and feelings in real time - including emotional and physical feeling

mental state next primary layer
mental state - specific thoughts or feelings at the time when we need to do something/ moment when we need to take action and that is stopping us from doing something – focus on thoughts and emotions in real time

only working with them not enough if it leads to more conflict and conflict is too habitual- important to move onto next layer

5- belief values positive intentions defense mechanisms

thought - particular to specific area
belief - reflected in multiple behaviors - deeper - wiring/powering multiple thoughts

client may experience conflict between values – e.g. lie to help – which value to be given priority

some people are able to push their thoughts aside - and execute relevant behavior to achieve desired result some find it overwhelming to fight with themselves
approx 2 weeks – if new thoughts become automatic – no need for going deeper – if changing beliefs causing conflict - working with belief is important

6- deeper intense emotions and traumas + series of experiences that have led to that suppression

While working towards the outcome - some problem erupts - no justified beliefs are there but reaction goes deeper into intense emotions – therapist needs to acknowledge this and may have to work with them separately, including past experiences

intense emotions/ trauma - impacted our lives at different times

1- one time but intense emotional imprint/ trauma
2- repetitive (not intense) - all clumped together - big suppression due to smaller events which accumulate to large problems and maybe repressed in memories

next layer - traumas influencing them but client not even aware of the presenting problem

7- repressed memories - client not aware - last – deepest layer

therapist should possess skills to work with different layers of the problem

not necessary to work with all of them for each client

if client able to apply steps - no need to go to a deeper layer
one checkpoint – are specific thoughts/ emotions becoming automatic or client fighting/struggling

no need to go deeper if working on a specific layer is solving the problem but for the level you are working - all layers above need to be worked upon as well as new behavior needs to be more natural effective sustainable

shift in internal world should be comprehensive enough to be reflected/translated into the external behavior/reality
if not - nothing much changed - only temporary relief
