Fun fact and a long post so I'll pre warn you.

Quite a few years ago I found myself in the right place at the right time at Atomik Weekender watching a DJ competition.

One of the entrants on the day had enjoyed himself a little too much and was unable to compete and by pure luck I was there when the judges found out and I was asked just to fill the spot.

So excitedly I accepted, ran back to my chalet grabbed my headphones & music and got back to the Queen Vic in time to fill this slot.

As I'm playing with no time to plan anything or knowing 40 minutes earlier I was even going to be doing this I just took a deep breath and played off the cuff (something which I didn't do at that point, but became the way I played afterwards from that point)

People who had turned up to see the DJ who was meant to be playing at that point, decided to rather than ask what had happened but boo me instead.

I had no idea who these people were, they had no idea who I was, or why I was playing. But booing was what they went with.

People who know me know I won't back down and I'm pretty argumentative so I continue doing my thing while I'm arguing with these idiots. After a short while I stopped and just laughed at the situation and responded with....

"I'm at this Weekender as an industry guest, I'm here because the judges trusted me, and I'm the one playing to a packed room.

You're the ones who've paid to be here, and you're wasting your time booing someone because your friend is too pickled to play, who's the mugs here"

Ironically I knew the guy who should have been playing, and it was a guy who I'd pushed to get himself in the competition (not that he needed to he's still doing extremely well for himself) but these guys didn't know that and saw it as me stealing their friends spot.

Fast forward about a month later, I received an apology from said idiots as they found out what had happened and the fact I was friends and a huge champion of said dj.

I could have taken the interaction to heart or just used it as fuel to prove a point, and I think over the years me being asked at that moment was justified.

Multiple festival and international bookings, music on multiple albums, radio 1 air time and support from international artists, shortlist for awards, multiple residencies and still have friends highly respected within the music industry...

So even though this picture is for Baseball the sentiment remains the same, never be concerned with people making judgement of what you do when you're the one being paid to do it. There's a reason you are being paid, and the reason they are paying to watch :)
