🔺🦷🔹3 habits you need to stop doing after you brush your teeth.
❔How many did you know?
🔺🦷🔹Addressing a complex case with a multidisciplinary approach -
This patient needed a collaborative effort from orthodontics, periodontics, and restorative dentistry.
After orthodontic treatment, the patient still had gingival margin discrepancies, small teeth, and required replacement of the upper left lateral incisor.
Orthodontics: Adjusted tooth movement affected bone levels, influencing the appearance of teeth.
Periodontics: Osseous surgery recontoured gingival tissues and bone for biological harmony.
Restorative: A resin-retained restoration was placed after 12 weeks of healing to ensure long-term esthetic results.
This successful collaboration kept everyone smiling.
🔺🦷🔹When I was 6 years old I knew I wanted to be a dentist.
🙏I told my parents about my dream and they helped me attain it in any possible way they could throughout my life.
This dream has driven me through years of education and training, and every day I'm grateful to live my passion.
Specializing in periodontology has allowed me to provide even more personalized and focused care, addressing the unique needs of each patient.
⭐It's incredibly rewarding to make a difference in people's lives.
🔺🦷🔹The surprising truth about periodontal disease:
Periodontal disease is a persistent and often underestimated condition that, once established, becomes difficult to eliminate.
ℹ️It begins with gum inflammation but can quickly progress to deeper infections, leading to the formation of pockets around your teeth where bacteria thrive. If these pockets become too deep, the damage can be irreversible.
But the impact doesn’t stop there - periodontal disease has been linked to serious health issues, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and respiratory infections.
💡Regular dental check-ups and rigorous oral hygiene are your best defenses against periodontal disease, helping to prevent it from escalating and affecting not just your oral health, but your entire body.
🔺🦷🔹Periodontal disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults.
If left untreated, periodontal disease can destroy the bone and connective tissue that supports your teeth, leading to tooth loss.
Early signs of periodontal disease include gums that bleed easily, persistent bad breath, and gums that are red, swollen, or tender.
ℹ️If you’ve noticed your teeth becoming loose or experiencing tooth loss, it’s crucial to see a periodontist immediately. They can assess the health of your gums and discuss your treatment options.
🔺🦷🔹I often get asked: "Is Periodontal Disease only a concern for older adults?"
Periodontal disease is often associated with aging, but it can affect individuals of ALL ages.
Older adults may be more susceptible due to factors like gum recession, weakened immune systems, and longer exposure to risk factors such as smoking or certain medications.
However, maintaining good oral hygiene, regular dental check-ups, and addressing risk factors promptly are crucial for preventing gum disease at any age.
🔺🦷🔹How to choose between dentures vs implants:
Dentures: Traditional and removable, dentures offer affordability and flexibility, ideal for those seeking a temporary or non-invasive solution to missing teeth.
Dental Implants: Durable and natural-looking, implants provide superior stability and functionality, mimicking real teeth for a long-term investment in oral health.
If you’re considering either options, it is reccomended to consult your Periodontist to discover the best dental solution for you.
🔺🦷🔹Did you know - people with type 2 diabetes are THREE TIMES for likely to get periodontal disease?
Periodontal disease is the most common and serious mouth problem related to diabetes. If left untreated, the disease advances in stages, from inflamed gums to tooth loss. High levels of blood glucose increase the risk that periodontal disease will progress from mild to severe.
💡See your periodontist if you suspect any symptoms of oral problems before they progress.
🔺🦷🔹Today I will be performing scaling and root planning, a vital procedure for improving gum health.
This treatment is a highly effective, non-surgical procedure to treat periodontal disease. It involves cleaning the teeth and roots to remove plaque and tartar buildup from below the gum line.
This procedure can yield the greatest improvement in cases with pockets
🔺🦷🔹By instilling good oral hygiene habits from a young age, we set the foundation for a lifetime of healthy smiles.
From brushing and flossing to choosing gum-friendly foods, there are many ways to educate and empower our children to prioritise their oral health -
Here’s a parents guide to teaching your kids about oral health!
🔺🦷🔹At a consultation we will often conduct probing depth measurements to assess gum health.
This crucial procedure involves measuring the depth of the pockets around the teeth, indicating the presence and/or severity of gum disease.
Understanding your probing depth can help to tailor personalised treatment plans to restore and maintain optimal gum health.
💡When asked about the difference between a General Dentist and a Periodontist - this is where a periodontist specialized expertise comes into play.
🔺🦷🔹4 Benefits of Flossing - That Don’t Have To Do With Your Gums and Teeth:
1. Supports Immune System: Removing oral bacteria through flossing can lessen the body's overall bacterial load, bolstering immune function.
2. Improves Cardiac Health: Flossing reduces oral inflammation, potentially lowering the risk of cardiovascular issues.
3. Reduces Risk of Preterm Labor: Maintaining oral health with regular flossing may mitigate the risk of complications during pregnancy, including preterm labor.
4. Decreases Body Inflammation: By removing plaque and food particles, flossing helps curb systemic inflammation, benefiting overall health.
🔺🦷🔹While tooth decay and gum disease are the most common oral diseases, various other conditions can affect your mouth beyond teeth and gums.
During dental visits, it's essential to thoroughly check all mouth tissues, including lips, cheeks, palate, and tongue.
💡Any abnormal lesions or masses are investigated for changes in colour, consistency, location, pain, size, and overall profile. These signs could indicate underlying medical conditions or habits like smoking or cheek biting.
While it may ‘look like’ or may be ‘consistent with’, the only true way to assign a diagnosis is to perform a biopsy.
🔺🦷🔹Suffering from gum sensitivity? It could be a sign of underlying periodontal disease.
⚠️Don't ignore it - take action to safeguard your smile and overall health.
🔺🦷🔹The patient's failed bridge has sparked interest in dental implants. Despite initial concerns about bone, preparatory procedures can help with implant placement, though it lengthens treatment time and increases costs.
A CBCT scan was ordered to check the amount of bone available from all angles. In this part of the jaw, the maxillary sinus is important.
ℹ️When teeth are lost due to severe periodontal disease or extraction without preserving the socket, the sinus floor can drop (pneumatization), making it hard to place implants. To fix this, a sinus lift procedure is needed. It involves making a window in the sinus wall, lifting the sinus membrane, and filling the space with bone graft material.
Healing from this graft typically takes at least 6 months post-procedure. Interested in this procedure? Feel free to book a consultation via:

🔺🦷🔹My favorite procedure:
Among the array of procedures I perform, soft tissue grafting stands out as one of my favourites.
💡While most treatments for periodontal disease happen below the gum line, soft tissue grafting offers tangible and visible results that patients truly appreciate. There's nothing quite like the feeling of seeing my patients newfound confidence and appreciation for their transformed smiles.
🔺🦷🔹Understanding Your Options -
When patients have sensitive and receding gums, and struggle with oral care, deciding between two types of gum grafts - Subepithelial Connective Tissue graft (CTG) and Free Gingival graft (FGG) depends on a few things:
-Marginal soft tissue recession
-Biotype & phenotype (thick vs. thin)
-Aberrant labial frenal attachment
-Shallow vestibule
-Lack of Keratinized (KT) /attached tissue
➡️In this post-orthodontic case with gum recession and a lack of keratinized tissue, an FGG was performed to increase KT, eliminate frenal attachment, and enhance vestibular depth, thereby improving oral hygiene. While CTG is typically best for root coverage, an FGG is often done first to prepare for CTG in cases like this.

🔺🦷🔹“Scrubbing in” as a periodontist is crucial for several reasons.
These include:
🔹Infection Control: Scrubbing in helps reduce the risk of transferring microorganisms from the hands and forearms to the patient during procedures, thus minimising the risk of infection.
🔹Patient Safety: By ensuring proper hand hygiene, periodontists can maintain a sterile environment and reduce the likelihood of post-operative complications for the patient.
🔺🦷🔹Did you know that the state of your mouth could be a window into your overall well-being?
It's true. Your oral health and systemic health are inter-connected.
From cardiovascular disease to systemic inflammation, your oral health plays a pivotal role in shaping your body's health landscape.
🔺🦷🔹This patient's journey to restore their smile began with three missing teeth on the lower right side.
To ensure precision, a CBCT scan was taken before surgery to plan the case effectively. Dental implant surgery was then performed, and the surgical site was carefully sutured and closed.
Following a healing period of 6-8 weeks, impressions will be taken to create a custom implant bridge, completing the restoration process.
Dental implants serve as a fixed solution to replace missing teeth, offering:
🔹stability and
🔹functionality
for a natural-looking smile.
✨Follow along as we transform this patient's smile.
🔺🦷🔹True or False - Is Periodontal Disease Hereditary?
TRUE. Some individuals may be genetically predisposed to developing periodontal disease.
💡However, It's crucial to understand that genetics are only a risk factor for a small portion of the population. For those who are genetically predisposed, the risk is usually linked to a more aggressive form of the disease, even when plaque buildup is minimal.
If you have concerns about your risk of periodontal disease due to family history, it's essential to maintain good oral hygiene and visit your dentist regularly for preventive care and early detection.
🔺🦷🔹Delaying your periodontist appointments?
It's essential to understand the medical risks involved.
Periodontal health is integral to overall well-being, as untreated issues can lead to:
🔹Gum disease progression
🔹Tooth loss
🔹And potential systemic health complications.
Don't put your oral and overall health at risk – prioritise your periodontal appointment.

🔺🦷🔹Witness the incredible transformation of this patient’s smile.
In this case we used:
🔹(SCTG) Sub-Epithelial Connective Tissue Grafting
🔹(PMT) Phenotype Modification Therapy.
SCTG is a dental procedure used to treat issues like gum recession. It's considered the gold standard for root coverage.
In this case, a free gingival graft was done to improve the amount of keratinzed tissue (thicker/more resistant soft tissue zone). The patient had a history of orthodontic treatment and a thin biotype prone to marginal soft tissue recession.

🔺🦷🔹Ever wondered what a CBCT can reveal about your dental health??
3D X-ray examinations, or CBCT scans, provide detailed, three-dimensional images of the teeth, jawbone, and surrounding tissues.
They are used in periodontology to assess:
🔹Bone density,
🔹Periodontal pocket depth,
🔹Root anatomy,
🔹Soft tissue health,
🔹And aid in dental implant planning.
These scans offer precise information for diagnosing periodontal conditions and planning effective treatments, contributing to better patient outcomes in periodontal care.
